F1 Crisis Continues to Spiral Out of Control

All eight FOTA teams likely to not enter the 2010 world championship

F1's political crisis continued to spiral out of control on Tuesday, as the FIA reiterated that elements of the FOTA team alliance seem determined to hinder the quest for compromise.

The FIA's financial experts met with their counterparts of the formula one teams association on Monday, but FOTA refused even to discuss the budget cap.

"As a result, the meeting could not achieve its purpose of comparing the FIA's rules with the FOTA proposals with a view to finding a common position," said the governing body in a statement.

With four days until the 19 June deadline, it seems increasingly clear that neither side will back down, and that major teams including Ferrari and McLaren will not enter the 2010 world championship.

In addition to its statement about the Monday meeting, the FIA released a nearly 3000 word statement chronicling the dispute with FOTA, and also reams of letter correspondence between the Paris body, Ferrari and the Italian team's lawyers.

F1 drivers Felipe Massa and Mark Webber, who both drive for FOTA member teams, said an alternative series should now be considered a serious option.

"As the teams appear to be united, then maybe it is time to look at doing something different that could be better for the sport," said Ferrari's Massa.

Red Bull's Webber wrote in his BBC column: "We want to drive for the best teams and race against the best drivers. If it's not the FIA formula one world championship, so be it."

Batting in the media for Max Mosley, however, was his friend Gerhard Berger, who told Germany's Auto Motor und Sport that "some men dream of playing Ecclestone and Mosley".

But the former grand prix winner and team co-owner doubts the threats of a breakaway championship can be followed through.

"BMW and Mercedes really have other problems at the moment: like selling cars," said the Austrian.

I dont understand.. did Mosley BUY Formula One? Does he own FIA? Cuz last time I checked, it was an appointment job. If 8 teams, including Ferrari are leaving, shouldnt that result in the poor management from the chairman and require a second look at his track record? I mean... what the f.

A RIVAL SERIES is the solution here! LeMans has invited the FOTA Teams to race in their series in 2010 and it seems like a good move. F1 Teams against the race winning Peugeot 908 and AUDI. How's that sound? Formula LeMans anyone?

The boss of Ferrari was at Le Mans at the wekkend. He has already said they'll be more involved there next year. I could see a few teams moving there if F1 isn't an option. It makes more sense doing that than creating a new series from scratch.

WTF? It would be sad as a new series is not as easy to launch. It seems that Mosley and Ecclestone are trying hard to prove that they are the boss. Someone here kill them, and things will be come much better.

wonder what name we'll be using next year... whatever happens at this point, 2010 will be a terrible year for motor racing fans. the fans have been very clear - we want f1 as pinacle sport, with best drivers, best cars and innovation, not stifling rules and regulations. FIA did not listen. what is the point of f1?? is it to showcase? to entertain? to be financially responsible? eco friendly? commercially successful? FIA have FORGOTTEN the roots of f1. f1 is to ENTERTAIN through innovation, speed, perfection and rewards. in plain terms, f1 is about man and machine, entertaining FANS. as i have seen posted elsewhere - premier league players have contracts that could buy an f1 team on budget cap. somehow, a team at the pinacle of motorsport is valued by the FIA at the equivalent of 1 MAN KICKING A BALL. in the mean time, bernie gets half the revenue from commercial aspects. need i say more.

well i will... what is the FOTA??? the FOTA was formed as a result of FIA and everyone concerned wanting teams and drivers (through gp drivers assoc) to work together. remember the 80s and 90s where team espionage, bickering, cheating, driver conflict etc. were making serious issues for the imge of f1? the FOTA was FIA's way of getting unity between teams to suggest rule changes, safety issues etc. now they exist and are working as FIA intended, FIA work to gag them, ignore them and cause disunity through singling out specific teams etc. THE CONCEPT WAS SOUND, THE TEAMS UNITED, THE FOTA CAN RUN F1. In fact, if the teams united as the joint shareholders of the financial success of the series, their only thought with rules, regulations and hosting MUST be based on WHAT THE FANS WANT.

I want F1 cars to go back to V10's and no aero regulations/limitations. Slicks was probably the best rule change for this year. So if the new series can bring that I'm all for it. I'm getting sick of the Ecclestone and Mosley crap...I sometimes wonder if they even know what there doing. But joining Le Mans? BORING... Also with the green eco crap...leave that to the LMP cars or start a new series with battery only cars racing.

new series new way of thinking a new way of coming up with a hot race .. sure every one will come after.. sure its not easy.. F1 was never easy ones it did start back then around 1930s in libya i think..!and look at it now.. on fire..always what ever go up must come down no matter when..i guess its time for a change.. time for a new race

If the FOTA Teams copmete in Le Mans they'll be competing with more liberal and considerate regulations, with their input being considered, as Remy Brouard, the Le Mans principal suggested to Luca di Montezemolo, in his invitation to the FOTA. But whether they join Le Mans or not isn't the issue. The point is they need to Start a new series! Massa, Webber, Alonso, Hamilton and other drivers have even said so. It might be difficult to set up, but it's in the best interest of the Sport, Competitiveness, entertainment and it'l be the best solution for the Fans! A racing series without politics, rule changes at the turn of every season and scandals!
