Audi R8 V10 Spider Prototype on Nurburgring

The 525 hp hair dryer

Our spy photographers have managed to catch Audi's new R8 Spider undergoing high performance testing on Germany's famous Nürburgring.

The highly anticipated roadster will be offered with a choice of either the standard 4.2 liter V8 engine boasting 420hp or the more potent 5.2-liter V10 engine with 525 hp and 530 Nm (391 lb-ft) of torque. On this ocassion, our spy photographer has caught the latter of these two options.

Considering that the R8 V10 coupe runs from 0-100 km/h in 3.9 seconds and has a top speed of 196 mph (315 km/h), we can assume the R8 V10 Spider will offer a 0-100 km/h time of about 4.1 seconds and a top speed in excess of 185 mph (297 km/h).

Like the coupe, the R8 V10 Spider boasts unique styling cues which help to differentiate it from the more plebian V8 powered R8 Spider. Key design elements of this exclusive model include LED headlights, a more aggressive rear diffuser, larger exhaust tips, and a chromed grille.

Look for the R8 Spider to be officially unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

This is about the only sportscar convertible that is a lot slower than the coupe. I hope they do something on the back of the roof, it looks weird

525bhp Hair dryer. Best sub-title for this article! But I think it is one of those Convertibles that only look good with the roof down. With the roof up, It just looks... meh.

Wasn't it the V10 engine in it anyway? And I thought I saw some been reports of more then one R8's catching fire anyway. Yes fully street legal ones that should be safe by now.

they tried to fit turbos on it, i.e. the RS6 engine , but the R8 is too small to add enough cooling , that's why it overheated and caught fire. that's why they canceled the diesel V12, same problem.

you know what's the problem with this car?..not with the 5.2, but with the R8 spider. where the heck is the carbon fibre from the side intakes? it looks like a bigger TT. looks cheap.

Yes, it has indeed lost the "blades" in the conversion to ragtop. Good spot. I've never liked the blades on the coupe, but I can see how much they made it look different now.

I wonder why exactly do some people hate the R8 so much? ...apart from the fact that they can't afford one obviously
