Racing legend did about 20 laps at the Fiorano track with the 599 GTB HGTE

Michael Schumacher was on hand at the Fiorano race track, where Ferrari was doing its school thing, to run a few laps with the new Ferrari 599 GTB HGTE.

Schumacher, winner of 7 Formula One titles, was a guest at a Pilota Ferrari driving course held by the Italian automaker. He took about 20 laps around the track to test out the new technologies of the HGTE model.

HGTE stands for Handling GT Evoluzione (or Evolution), a new performance package first introduced at the Geneva auto show in March. HGTE features a lower, more stiffened suspension, modified damper settings, and a new sport exhaust sound for the 599 GTB. The package also comes with a few cosmetic enhancements such as an interior carbon-fiber cabin finish with a meaner-looking grill and specialized 20-inch rims on the outside.

Ferrari offers a variety of driving courses, restricted to Ferrari owners, including one that prepares drivers to race in the Ferrari Challenge event. It must have been a treat for those drivers taking a course at Fiorano to get to see (and perhaps even meet) a driving legend such as Schumacher.

Learning to race a Ferrari sounds great. But doing it next to Schumacher might make one feel a little under-talented.

Michael Schumacher on the track with the 599 GTB HGTE

Maranello, 10 June 2009 - Michael Schumacher covered around 20 laps of Fiorano today at the wheel of the 599 GTB equipped with the Handling GT Evoluzione package that was recently introduced at the Geneva Show.

The seven-times World F1 Champion took to the track to try out the improved handling offered by the new set-up which emphasises the performance of this, Ferrari's most powerful berlinetta.

The Handling GT Evoluzione package includes a lower, stiffer ride, a new tyre compound offering even better levels of grip, modified magnetorheological damper settings that improve body control and an even more sporty exhaust sound. The HGTE package also includes a number of styling touches that distinguish it from the standard production car, including a more aggressive front grille, specific 20" rims and abundant use of carbon-fibre trim in the cockpit.

Schumacher took the 599 GTB HGTE to its very limits at the Fiorano track during one of the factory's Pilota Ferrari driving courses. These are organised exclusively for Ferrari owners and four levels of courses are available - Basic, Advanced, Evolution and Challenge, along with a special On Ice course and a dedicated one for those wishing to race in the traditional one-make racing series, the Ferrari Challenge. The courses have been run in Italy for over 15 years and, more recently, courses have also been set up in the USA, China and, from 2009, in Japan.

With its Pilota Ferrari driving courses, Ferrari offers owners a comprehensive range of expert tuition designed to progressively instruct drivers in the art of performance driving, enabling them to appreciate even more the handling characteristics of their cars, and help them use their full potential in absolute safety, both on the track and on the road.

Car crashes? Last time i heard about Schumacher was 1 year ago, when he used a psedonym and attend bike races.. And then drive Petter Solbergs Subaru. Such a shame with prodrive and Subaru in WRC though.. +1 to financial crisis.

will Ferrari be able to flog their golden boy of F1 fame if they end up quitting the sport? haha I think not... they wont quit! ferrari needs F1, for this exact reason... people buy their frankly awkward looking machines because of this man and that sport! who will be their next pin up boy? I'll put up my hand if it means i get to crash things!? haha
