The hotly contested "Cash for Clunkers" program has received a major vote of confidence thanks to a new bill passed by the U.S. House of Representatives.

Aimed to give owners of gas guzzlers up to $4,500 to purchase a more fuel efficient vehicle, the program will attempt to kick start lagging automotive sales. Although the House only set aside $4 billion dollars of initial funding, the Congressional Budget Office estimates that the bill could spur at least 625,000 new vehicle purchases.

In order to be eligible under the program, the "clunker" would need a combined fuel economy rating of 18 mpg or less.

Supporters in the Senate hope to attach the bill to the next major piece of legislation in order to get it on the President's desk as soon as possible.

GO HUMMER, I happen to own an H2 n the rust bucket gets 9.1mpg's not bad considerin my 06 M5 gets 7.2mpgs. N really the truck is a great offroading monster, all i changed on it was the tires went to goodyear mtr's, but other than that it sucks, its rusting falling apart n costs me about 2k a month on up keeping. But for some reason I do love the hunk of s**t.

So I am paying for my neighbors new car? This isn't socialism? Then what the hell is it? Is there no end to the way the government will spend our money? Can we just fire these fools now?

I just read a little more about this, unless your car worth less than $4500, it's better to trade it in.

So if you were dumb enough to buy a Hummer (or similar) then you get a credit when trading it in? Am I reading this right? Are we rewarding people for being stupid?

HaHaHa..they are giving you $4500.00 to spend, so you can take on a $20,000 note minimum, for a car that will save you at most a few hundred dollars in fuel over the course of a year, raises your insurance and depending on your location, registration cost is based on value...newer car...more to register, the people driving the car they are targeting couldnt afford a new car with a $10,000 voucher.

The x6 is way uglier then the Hummer.
