The silver McLaren F1 supercar that caught fire last week on a California road will now be sent back to Britain in the hopes of restoring the vehicle.

The McLaren F1 is owned by Irv Kessler, who was driving the vehicle to Oregon last Monday when a fellow motorist alerted him to the smoke coming out of the back end. The F1's engine bay then burned until firefighters were able to put out the blaze before it spread into the passenger compartment.

Kessler's F1 is one of only 64 road-ready models produced between 1992 and 1998. The one owned by Kessler is a 1995 model which he purchased two years ago.

The car is insured for 2 million US dollars, according to Kessler, and insurance experts in the US told him the car had a 90 percent chance of being restored. McLaren officials weren't as optimistic, giving the car a 50-50 prognosis based on photos they had seen of it.

Have a look-see for yourself. Salvageable?

You can restore anything but only if you can find or remake the parts. No doubt it could be done but the cost may be prohibitive.

not sure actually, but i mean if they guy can afford to buy an F1 then im sure he can pay for full restoration lol. although as said above only 64 road ready ones durring that time period have be produced so parts could be hard to find or limited.

If you could save an endangered species that you really cared about (and, er, owned) for whatever sum of money, wouldn't you?

He didn't do that to the car himself. I'm sure he never would have bought that particular example if he had known it was going to spontaneously combust.

Considering the state that Rowan Atkinson's car was restored from, this will be a walk in the park for McLaren.

The car is insured for $2 million that means if the insurance was to declare a total loss, the owner would get $2 million settlement. In the insurance company's eyes, it's still a better deal to pay, example- $1.6 million dollar and restore the car, than to pay the guy a full $2 million. That's a $400,000 difference..

if the car's chassy was damaged, it will be hard to restore. the F1 uses a carbon fiber inner structure, bonded with a special adhisve, replacing a damaged part will compromise the stractaral integrity. Thats my openion

Omg, they can seriously repair the damage? If they can, they must be REALLY good fixers!

Ofcourse its his fault. Anyone who owns such a ride & moth balls it for 6 months deserves what happened. Thats y i called him an a** hole. Wickedated, are you related to him that your getting so flustered???

Yeah, you wouldn't be nuts to take an F1 out in the middle of winter or anything. And god forbid that you should go out of town or work abroad for six months.

I think it's obvious who the arse is in this situation.

I'd want a replacement. You'll - most likely - not get it back to its original state with a refurb.
