BMW, ever on the cutting edge of the marketing machete, has released some teaser pictures of the X1 on the web. Instead of these leaking out as they sometimes do, BMW themselves put them up on their FaceBook page. That says we are not too far off from seeing the first full set of official pictures.

Official camouflaged "spy" pictures of a prototype X1 are already all over the Internet after appearing a few days ago. The tiny SUV is one step down from the X3 and represents the new entry-level BMW SUV. BMW is targeting an even younger set with the X1, people who are mostly urban dwellers and probably haven't started nesting yet.

There are a few models planned for the X1 including an xDrive18i and a 177hp (130kW) xDrive20d. Higher up the model range the xDrive23d will be offered. It puts out 204hp (150kW) and 400Nm of torque. It also runs from 0 - 60mph in 7.3 seconds and realises a top velocity of 223km/h. BMW's xDrive AWD system is fitted but there's speculation that baseline models will feature RWD.

European deliveries will start in autumn which means the vehicle will appear in the metal at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Oooh, I can't wait for the X1M!! What, think they won't do it? After they pioneered the performance sedan segment with the original M3, I think they want to do it again with 4x4s. Except they won't be pioneers because of a certain fat, ugly, Porsche that beat them to it. My plea? Do the effin' V8 Z4M, please!

I don't think it will be significantly different from the concept version.

This looks like mix-n-match car from BMW product line....headlight is derived from the new 7-series, kidney grille from 5-series GT, and rear light is an evolution of the facelifted 3-series. I'll buy it if its priced really cheap....like the CRV range....lol

Don't care. 1 series is ugly, releasing a X version won't make it any better.

What's cutting edge about it? Releasing these teaser photos is just annoying. Although if these photos are of the more interesting elements of the overall design then we can be spared of seeing the rest. The now too-predictable assemblage of BMW bits. Sad, but true.

Is it just me or are we all growing tired of BMW? I mean, it used to design sexy cars with great engines... now it just builds weird OR bland cars... and though I do even like the weird ones, they are now managing to come up with cars that are both weird AND bland... while we didn't even know it was possible! In my opinion, the 6-series is hands down the best Bimmer from the current lineup... while the rest is completely forgettable. No class, no flair and no sex appeal. But yes, awesome engines and amazing rides... Well, I just don't care about that new X1. The concept version was boring... production version must be almost Lexus-like.
