Spy pictures showing a prototype of the next BMW 1 Series hatch have surfaced. Covered in typical BMW black and white psychedelic camouflage, the 1er is in the later stages of its development cycle which will culminate in its official launch sometime in 2011. The 5-door compact will feature a RWD drivetrain on which power will be put via 6-speed manual gearboxes or automatic transmissions.

Unconfirmed word is that BMW is experimenting with a larger shooting brake/ wagon variant for the 1 so that American customers who demand more space can be easily accommodated.

The engine list includes both petrol (turbocharged and naturally aspirated) and turbo diesel variants. The petrols range from a 115i with a 105bhp (78kW) 1.3-litre engine, to a 116i with the same motor but sporting a higher power figure of 136bhp (101kW) and a 135iS whose maximum power is 326bhp (243kW).

Diesel badges should include a 118i worth 150bhp (112kW), a 120d making 184bhp (137kW) and a 123d with about 211bhp (157kW). BMW's Efficient Dynamics programme which aims to reduce fuel consumption and C02 emissions while keeping the performance at expected levels will form part of the range's package of standard and/ or optional items. Other highlights will be LED lights for the front and rear ends, iDrive in some models and runflat tyres.

It's "Shooting Break", not "Brake". ;-)

Ok... someone needs to do a little research. ;)

As for the car, I just hope it is better looking than the current one.

Doesn't look any different from the current one. I hope it will be at least a bit less ugly, though.

What's the naturally aspirated engine then?
