Looks even better on the street than on those other photos. Looks like a cross over between a few hatches out there. The Mazda3 and Seat leon resemble it a bit too.

Hm send it in the US, put a Buick badge on it and it will sell like hot cakes.

Looks even more like a Madza with some parts of Seat Leon on those pics.

I think it is more than obvious that this Astra is a neat copy of the Leon rather than the Mazda , especially in the sides. (The Leon itself derives from a Seat's concept - revealed in 2000 and the name I believe was called the Seat Salsa or somthing like that - so the original conception of the design should be acclaimed I guess to Seat.) Living in Europe , I have seen both cars (the SEAT Leon and the last as well the previous gen Mazda 3) not only through some photos but also in the streets . For non-Europeans or for those who've seen only the Mazda, I am sure it's a bit difficult to tell that the sides of the Leon and the Astra are almost identical. I guess it's a design coming out from GM Europe's department so they had to catch some european influences...

The side window line is actually identical to Leon, this is however the only resemblance I can spot.

Well it 's not only the side window line, actually it 's the side window line plus the proportions with the roofline, the roofline itself, the cut of the doors and the bumpers, the inclination of the windscreen and the spoiler, the thin frame of the windows, the front triangle-shaped window, the whole form of the car. Every single detail matches the Astra with the Leon - not the Mazda - if you watch at it carefully.

This looks good now but I think it will date very quickly. I don't think it looks as good as the current Astra, which still looks as good today as it did when it was released (especially in 3dr form). It seems Vauxhall have done what Ford did with the Focus mkII and changed from a radical design and played it too safe. I think this is going to struggle up against the Mazda 3, Golf and forthcoming Focus III.

True. Some have played it safe better than others. This will date quickly. The Corsa already looks like it needs a redesign, the Insignia is the exception to the rule. But actually over the last few years I have seen some cars from Opel/Vauxhall that date really quickly. I think that in Britain, there are so many of them that they just become old news instantly.

The line of the car is proportionate and elegant, although not innovative and unique. It is more like a japanese car, generally good but almost no character.

The Japanese meaninglessness for being nothing like Megane e.g. News is that GM prefere Magna to take over the Opel/Vauxhall brand not Fiat. Source: Spiegel-Il Giornale today.

Correct me if I am wrong; headlights - unique taillights - unique hood - similar to antara - insifnia - unique to Opel grille - unique front bumper and integrated fog and turn lights combo - unique dashboard - similar to insignia - unique to Opel overall size - bigger and taller than both Mazda and Leon so ?

By the way do not forget that the rear fender/taillight combination is inherited from the existing astra...

back reminds of the new renault megane. Not bad at all, but I was expecting a bit aggressive look

One of the nicer looking hatchbacks from the rear but the front and sides? Nothing dynamic about it at all... says nothing to me. Well the Golf MK6 doesn't either. See what the others can come up with.

With these side windows it looks like an mpv, just remove that small window between the sidemiror and the bonnet. Than put the windscreen a little more vertical, so the bonnet is longer and the view to the windscreen is better
