Perhaps Ferrari ought to consider going into selling classic cars. It seems this is an extremely lucrative business to be in at the moment, especially for the legendary Italian marque. Why just last year a rare 1961 250 GT SWB California Spider went for a record US$10.9 million in auction. Now another Ferrari in the body of a 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa has gone under the hammer for US$12.1 million, thus setting a new world record for a car sold on auction. The auction was conducted at Ferrari's Maranello factory by RM Auctions in association with Sotheby's.

The 250 Testa Rossa wears the chassis number 0714TR. It is one of just 22 that were produced between 1957 and 1958. These cars won 10 of the 19 international races which they entered from 1958 and 1961. Chassis number 0714TR entered its first sanctioned race, the Buenos Aires 1,000-kilometre, in 1958 and came fourth. Soon after that it was sold to an American gentleman who frequently raced it during SCCA events.

Although Testa Rossa means "red head" in Italian, the record-breaking car is not red. In 1984 Ferrari built a new 319kW (434hp) Testarossa which became a sales hit. Only one of the almost 10,000 units made was an official Spider/ convertible and it too was not red but silver. The car was made specially as a gift for Gianni Agnelli, the late former head of Fiat.

LEGENDARY 1957 FERRARI TESTA ROSSA SMASHES AUCTION WORLD RECORD AT MARANELLO SALE

An iconic, pontoon-fender 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa (TR) sells for €9,020,000 to set a new auction world record as the most expensive motor car ever to be sold at auction.

MARANELLO, Italy (May 18, 2009) - RM Auctions, in association with Sotheby's made history in Maranello as a 1957 Ferrari 250 TR, chassis no. 0714TR sold for €9,020,000 at the third annual Ferrari Leggenda e Passione event to set a new world record for the most expensive motor car ever to be sold at auction.

Returning to its Maranello birthplace for its auction debut, the €9,020,000 sale price represents €1,980,000 more than the previous auction world record which was set at the same sale last year*.

"The historical significance of this car attracted a bidding war as collectors from around the world - both in the room and on the telephone - competed to secure one of the most alluring and iconic of all Ferrari racing cars," said Max Girardo, Managing Director of RM Europe.

"The eyes of the world were watching the sale as cars of this quality are so rarely offered to the market. The quality and the provenance of the Testa Rossa speaks for itself and the price we achieved is testament to that. We are delighted with the result the car achieved today," he added.

The beautiful and immediately recognizable Scaglietti-designed ‘pontoon-fender' 250 TR was produced from 1957 to 1958 during which only 22 examples were constructed. The Ferrari 250 TRs entered 19 international championship races from 1958 through 1961 emerging with 10 victories and earning them legendary status among discerning collectors, as well as the honor of being one of the most desirable and competitive racing Ferraris ever built.

0714TR was extensively campaigned in its day with significant finishes at the world's most important racing events including the 1000 km Buenos Aires in January 1958.

The Ferrari Leggenda e Passione is the only auction of its kind dedicated to the Ferrari marque, held at the Maranello factory grounds and endorsed by the Ferrari factory.

12 mill. for a car while more and more people are starving and can hardly make a living. i don`t care if it is rare or art or whatever, it is pure obscenity and a slap in the face of the disadvantaged.

In that case why dont you give any extra income you make and give it away to "starving" people?

The automotive industry is one of the purest examples of hardcore capitalism in the world; if you're concerned about the poor, you might have to reconsider being a petrol head. =P

This is the most ridiculous statement I've ever heard. Having the rich give all their money to the poor... I think we all know what ideology stems from that.

People shouldn't be penalized for being rich. Working hard and earning a lot of money is a blessing, not a crime.

Ridiculous.

When you have that much money you are ion the charity business. I am sure this guy has given a good amount of money off to charity. Even if he hasn't, he made the money, he made the sacrifices, and he can spend it any way he wants.

If more people think like catchmyshadow world would be a better place. Instead, we now pick the fruits (the crisis) of a bad managed capitalist society. There are frequent examples of rich guys owing very expensive goods (including cars) but who were proven to have stolen from other people's money or not having payed the taxes due to the public budget. Don't get me wrong, I lived both in communism and capitalism and I don't want to ever live again the communist experience. IMO, capitalism is bad and communism is worse. So a free market economy, but with more solidarity among people, would be desirable.

WCF: The rocker covers are red, hence "Testarossa." I've had the rare pleasure of seeing a TR59 in the metal up close and even saw it do a few laps around a local raceway. These machines are absolutely worth every million -- words will never do justice to describe the experience.

wrong information, the most expensive car ever sold was the Bugatti Royale for 10,000,000 Pounds (!) at auction in the UK in 1992.

Why is that "too much" ? too much for you maybe, if a guy has 500 million in the bank, 12 million to him is the equivalent of you buying a new computer.

Of course there is no need that the car should be red. Testa Rossa only points to the valve covers, which are red.
