FIA Sneakily Revives Controversial 'Winner Takes All' Scoring System for 2010

The controversial 'winner takes all' scoring system has been rubber stamped for introduction in 2010 by the FIA World Motor Sport Council.

The governing body tried to introduce Bernie Ecclestone's favoured system this year, but the late change was vetoed by the F1 teams alliance FOTA.

We reported in March that the FIA would consult the teams before trying to introduce the system for 2010, but the new sporting regulations for next year already feature the controversial rule.

Article 6 states that the drivers' title "will be awarded to the driver who has been classified first in the greatest number of races".

The news has until now slipped the attention of the media because - unlike all other changes to the rules - the amended rule was not highlighted in pink and underlined in copies of the 2010 sporting regulations.

The FIA also confirmed that, accompanying the ban on race refuelling next year, drivers in 'Q3' can refuel under parc ferme conditions prior to the race.

This change ensures the spectacle of low-fuel dashes for pole position, not affected by varying race strategies.

even with whats happening now, I don't see F1 fading away. But I do see that soon the f1 will be in the same league as Indy, where only a small percaentage will watch and even care about whats happening and even the media will take a backseat to whats happening and focus more media attention on races like touring car, DTM etc. I for one would like to see DTM on American channels.

This F1 is getting so dreary now . its all too little too late. This is what happend to WRC rallying all the big names started to pull out , People like to see big names race and isnt that the whole point of motorsport ? But then Its nice to see Smaller teams on the front row again and see genuine smiling faces on the podium ...

I don't think the current situation in F1 should be compared in any way to WRC. It was very unfortunate when Mitsubishi pulled out some years ago, and now Subaru and Suzuki, but their decissions didn't have anything to do with the FIA and their great ideas. I really hope the FIA or stupid people like Ecclestone never ruin my favorite sport, just like they did with Formula 1.

As much as I thought I'd hate this season, with all of Ecclestone's new "rules", it's been great so far. But I just don't know what to think of this new rule... It really depends on the drivers attitudes towards it. Will it make them push harder for the win, or will it just leave the "bad" manufacturers in an even worse position with one or two drivers dominating.

That makes sense what the FIA are saying but just as Joshg 5 said. The championship will be decided at race 9 because Jensen Button will win 9 races and the rest of the championship would be boring because Button would be 1st.
