Spanish automaker Seat is claiming to have set a world record for fuel economy in its class, not including hybrid or alternative-fuel vehicles. The company claims to have driven a Seat Ibiza Ecomotive over 1,562 km on one tank of gas, for a consumption rate of 2.9 liters per 100km.

Austrian driver Gerhard Plattner was behind the wheel a week ago, driving the car through Spain and France on his way to Frankfurt. Upon reaching Frankfurt, Plattner looked at the fuel gauge and noticed there was still a bit left in the tank. Instead of stopping, he piloted the car further on, finally finishing up in Göttingen.

Upon refueling, Plattner said, "setting this record has been incredible. Without a doubt, it has been the most spectacular fuel-saving challenge this year. The pouring rain practically all through the night made driving difficult, but the Ibiza ECOMOTIVE performed to perfection."

Seat gives credit both to Plattner, and to the car's design. The company claims "optimized streamlining, weight reduction and modifications to the 80 hp 1.4 TDI" was instrumental in taking the record.

  • Driving across Spain, France and Germany on a single tank
  • Only 45.53 litres of fuel were needed to cover the distance of 1,562 km
  • Austrian long-haul specialist Gerhard Plattner set the record

The SEAT Ibiza ECOMOTIVE is undisputedly the most ecological vehicle in its segment after proving its driving efficiency by covering no less than a distance of 1,562 km on a single tank of fuel, resulting in an average consumption figure of 2.9 l/100 km. This incredible feat was carried out magnificently by Austrian Gerhard Plattner, a well-known champion of fuel-saving tests, who got the most out of the Ibiza ECOMOTIVE’s qualities.

Gerhard Plattner drove out of the Martorell facilities near Barcelona on board of the Ibiza ECOMOTIVE last Monday 27 April, after both the bonnet and the fuel tank filling mouth had been sealed. The trip began under supervision by the IPMC (International Police Motor Corporation), which was initially planned along a 1,345 km route from south to north on public motorways at a suitable pace.

Plattner drove the Ibiza ECOMOTIVE through Perpignan, Avignon, Lyon, Mulhouse, Freiburg, Frankfurt and finally Göttingen on his way to setting the record. At some points along the way on motorways in Spain and France, Plattner brought the Ibiza up to cruising speeds of 110 km/h.

When they made their triumphant entry in Frankfurt, the SEAT Ibiza ECOMOTIVE had already set the world fuel-saving record for a car in its category, but there was still some fuel left in the tank, so Plattner decided to continue driving until he reached Göttingen, where the chairman of the IPMC removed the seal from the filling mouth and they refuelled the car with the exact same quantity as when the car had left Martorell: 45.53 litres.

A smiling Plattner declared that “setting this record has been incredible. Without a doubt, it has been the most spectacular fuel-saving challenge this year. The pouring rain practically all through the night made driving difficult, but the Ibiza ECOMOTIVE performed to perfection.”

The SEAT Ibiza ECOMOTIVE is the leading car in its segment in terms of sustainability and the Spanish brand’s most ecological car, thanks to its low fuel consumption figure of only 3.7 l/100 km and CO2 emissions level of 98 g/km.

Optimised streamlining, weight reduction and modifications to the 80 hp 1.4 TDI engine’s management have given rise to one of the cleanest cars on the market today. Besides, it is the only model equipped with air-conditioning, a five-door body style and such a low emissions level.

Who needs a hybrid anyway?

Well i know of a hybrid, that's getting a mileage below this one, which has been around 10 years ago and didn't need the higher density diesel to get below 3 liters per 100 km.

If you are talking about the Toyota Prius (what else?), then you are dreamer...

It has been checked by some european magazines. It was not possible to go below 4.7 liter/100km.

Honda Insight 1st gen. Did 2.8 and less liters per 100 kilometers in road testing. Also you can't compare the average consumption of the Prius with this figure, because the Seat was most likely driven at 80 km/h on highway. Prius would smash that figure this way too i guess.

Prius got beaten by a BMW 5-series diesel (520d)

as well as the (Top Gear) BMW M3!

Hell yeah Seat!

Now they either have to improve their image or sell this technology to another manufacturer.

The problem with this 1.4 TDI powerplant (in fact, a VW engine) is the noise. It's a 3 cylinder non common rail engine. For this reason it will be replaced soon by a new 1.2 TDI (also a 3 cylinder) but common rail which promises to be more frugal than the current one.

I wish we could buy this car in our "so called free country, the USA". I want fuel efficient cars, not those who enrich Big Oil & the Middle East! Maybe if more readers would write our congressmen & senators, we could get such cars as this.

If my math is correct, that is over 80 (US) MPG. Maybe with Fiat's taking over Chrysler we can get some fuel efficient cars in the USA. One US gallon = 3.785 liters. I divided 2.9 by 3.785 & got .766 gallons which I divided into 62 miles to get 80.94 MPG!

Yup WmToensing, I got 81.1mpg

Michael, whats the problem with noisy cars? I think it's boring to have a car that is so good isolated that you can't hear any engine sound

The most frequent negative reviews relating to the VW TDI PD engines concerne the noise and lack of refinement (vibrations) of these engines. Therefore, VW is currently replacing those engines with common rail diesels (2.0 TDI PD to 2.0 TDI CR up to 204 hp and 1.9 TDI PD to 1.6 TDI CR). Being a 3 cylinder engine, 1.4 TDI PD is noisier than its bigger brothers. Furthermore, Ibiza is a small car and does not have the same noise insulation as a compact or medium sized car. So imagine that you have to drive such a car (with a small engine) for o long distance on highway (let's say at 130 km/h). It's not the most comfortabale ride and that's because of the noise...

That a diesel is noisy - it´s a tale from the past (GM diesels from the 70´s). Have you ever driven a modern european diesel?

For US-drivers, the diesel is much better than any asian hybrid: I drive a 2000er Seat Ibiza TDI with a 110hp Audi-engine and the consumption is: Highway (constant speed) 50mph - 98 mpg, 75mph - 85mpg, 110mph - 34mpg, 130mph - 23mpg City 40mpg Even if you can believe it, these are true and realistic values..

Also I can overtake every Prius in 5th gear within a few seconds - hybrids are slow and heavy.
