BMW X1 Caught During Photoshoot

Set to go on sale this fall

BMW's upcoming 2010 X1 crossover has been caught completely undisguised during a photo shoot thanks to a member of forum-auto.com.

Looking virtually identical to the X1 Concept which debuted at the 2008 Paris Motor Show, the low resolution photo shows the biggest change to the production model is a slightly reworked grille with additional chrome detailing which likely signifies this particular X1 boasts a high-end engine.

Speaking of engines, the X1 will be powered by a variety of naturally aspirated and turbocharged petrol engines as well as several diesel units. Eventually a hybrid version is expected to be launched, but nothing has been officially confirmed as of yet. Base models will come equipped with a six-speed manual transmission and sDrive (rear-wheel drive) while an eight-speed automatic and xDrive (all-wheel drive) will be optional.

The X1 will ride on the E90 3-Series platform which results in a longish 2760mm (108.6") wheelbase and an overall length of 4457mm (175.5"). While this should result in a roomy interior, it puts the X1 perilously close to being the same size as the X3 which is just 108mm (4.3") longer.

Look for the X1 to go on sale in Europe this fall with a base price somewhere in the neighborhood of £20,000.

Looks nice - but I'd prefer one without the scaffolding option. Not sure what the brown blob on the left is though, it looks like an Austin Allegro.

If it is perilously close in dimensions to the X3, and they are both as ugly as sin, why not produce neither? Looking at this thing, I can't stop thinking Hyundai. I think you might want to sit down, BMW; you just failed pretty hard. Take a break, maybe, and recover.

I like the re-cycled 7-series "El Camino" camera car. Haven't the Germans discovered pick up trucks yet?

That's actually the next niche car BMW is going to introduce, the luxury car based sport pickup truck, aka X7. The rumors say there will be an M version as well.

lol Taq, seriously it looks like an austin allegro, especially in that brown color.

i think its clear that the next x5 will be positioned to compete with the q7 so bigger with seven seats. x3 will also get bigger, that will then allow for 3 SUV's in the range, just like mercedes and audi

True- right now merc has the glk, ml and gl on the market, and Audi has Q7, Q5... oh, thats actually it.I can't wait till BMW put a vehicle in the MPV and Kombi type vehicles, ooh and don' forget LDV's and skateboards!

well it proves that the E38 has a very good ride quality. they could have had the X6. X6 pick-up truck anyone?

BMW X5, X6, new 7 series all nice looking cohesive designed cars. 3 series, not too bad, not great, could be better. Everything else from BMW of late, since Bangle (good thing he left) has been a disappointment style wise. And now this "brown blob on the left" as someone put it. Shame BMW can't get better stylers, their cars handle really well and are a pleasure to drive (haven't driven all of them of course).

what a hideous little car. looks like a baby hipo or something. my oh my...

oh, and about its dimensions being too close to the x3's... maybe the next x3 will follow a sportier direction, like a small x6... at least that would be a little more respectful to the 3-series heritage.

well, just guessing.

Friggin' UGLY. And the brown color makes it that much more reminiscent of a "dog pile." Just because it is smaller than the grotesque 5er GT, doesn't mean that it doesn't look porky, pudgy, and portly. It does. "Designing by committee after gauging market interest" is was produced the abysmal Ford Edsel and the laughably hideous Pontiac Aztek. BMW has so obviously lost their way. Timing is important, too, yet BMW continues to go off in seemingly poor directions. X5M and X6M? Now? IN THIS market? How many will they sell and at what cost? I'm disappointed and disgusted. Where are the great (read: sporting and efficient)sedans, coupes, and touring models for the discerning masses? Oh - right - they are driving Mercs, Audis, and others...

it's...er...ugly. hope my opinion not offend anyone. doesn't BMW has enough SUV (or SAV they called)? X1, X3, X5, X6...maybe X4, X7 & X8 not far away?

what about bmw's new naming pattern? ridiculous. i wonder what will happen when they start announcing the new versions of that car...

i mean, the all new 2011 bmw x1 x-drive-25 hybrid m sports activity vehicle, anyone?

hope it has enough space on the trunklid for so many names... or that they simply rename it with something shorter, like 'baby beemer', or easier to understand, like 'i couldnt afford an x5 so i'm stuck with this'.

now that's a name we could remember.

and let's not forget about the upcoming MINI Crossover (what an inspired name!) which has the same dimensions, probably the same platform, and it a lot of cases, sold through the same dealers. Chevy and Pontiac all over again (and we know how that turned out).

I think there's too much punishment for BMW. They need to take the chance, at the end they were the ones that built a magnificent SUV for a race track that is the main purpose for the average vehicle that people buy, they don't pay too much attention to the dimensions or the shape of the car. Some of them had the courage to buy a Hummer!! for Christ sake!, why not pay a lot of thousands of dollars more for a militar vehicle that in fact, it's just gonna suck more dollars from your pocket as fuel... What BMW makes is pretty much the rule that other manufacturers have to follow, there was an X5 followed by the ML class, there was an X3 followed by the brand new MLK. Even Land Rover that is a reference on real SUVs (that you can get into the country side and get through with no problem what so ever) they built the Freelander and they have the Range Rover. It is just a simple market matter. And by the way, I think I prefer Chris Bangle that was giving an identity to each model of BMW than all of the other designers that just make one design and they "cut" it to each size of car the brand is selling... I love the BMW 5 series, it is just a different car, special design, nothing ever seen before..

Irrespective of whether it looks like a Hyundai or not, it looks more fluid than the current x5 and x3 and certainly better looking than the x6.

Quepasok, The ML came out before the X5, Mercedes Started the Luxury SUV Segment or SAV in BMW's case and everybody else just raped the segment as you can see above!!! Too many SUV's out there nowadays!! The ML was first shown in 1993 as a concept vehicle in the movie Jurassic Park... Remember that? And was in full production in 1997 already.
