Pontiac G8 could Survive as Chevy Commodore Police Car - Report

GM's Australian unit Holden hopes to keep Pontiac G8, based on its Commodore model, alive as police car in the US

"Cops in cars, the topless bars..."

Yes, the LAPD, that rodeo clown show masquerading as a police force, may just have a hand in saving the Pontiac brand from complete extinction.

Our distinguished colleagues at GoAuto are reporting that the Pontiac G8 may live on by re-badging itself a Chevrolet Commodore and look for work around town as a police car. Given that the Pontiac G8 is based on Australia's Holden Commodore, and that GM's Australian unit is more than upset at the axing of the Pontiac brand, it seems Holden is looking for a way to keep their production going in the wake of the disaster that GM has become.

Holden has, indeed, supplied vehicles for a joint police car concept project by the NSA (National Safety Agency) of Australia and the LAPD. And they may just be hyping that up in order to get more police forces interested in buying what they have to sell. But they say up to 40,000 units a year. Eh...??

Likely to happen? Probably not. Maybe a few super-fied cop cars will show up here and there before, you know, budget-strapped cities realize maybe it's cheaper to buy your police cars from a place that is not, literally, half-way around the world.

And what about that old workhorse the Crown Vic? Well, it's being phased out by Ford next year for the general public (too bad, she was quite a ship) but Ford is committed to keeping the Crown Victoria Police Interceptor the chief of police cars, so to speak. So Holden may be dreaming in technicolor, to revive an old phrase, if they think they can knock the old Vic off her perch.

And where are you Chevy Impala? C'mon, yes you can.

But if they re-badge it as a Chevy Commodore then it won't be a Pontiac G8 anymore. It'll be a Chevy Commodore. I don't think GM is getting rid if the entire range of Pontiac based vehicles, but the brand itself. I.O.W they have too many cars that are exactly alike with different badges. So uncle Sam wants them to streamline and cost cut their operations, they have to sacrafice a brand or to, to ensure that the company survives.

Here in South Africa we have a 6.0l V8 - Chevy Lumina SS Sedan and SS Ute with 270 Kw. Same car different name!

Ditto the GCC, the Arab Gulf states. It's a sales success here, along with its larger platform twin, the Caprice.

Renaming the G8 as a Chevy Caprice with the top model (the G8 GXP) as the Chevy Impala makes a lot of sense. Unfortunately GM has to cut the # of models in its lineup. That means that for every new car nameplate one has to go. At least they have a number of cars that should be cut. Keep the G8 as a Chevy and you have a winner.

The Commodore/G8 is kinda small to be a Caprice/Impala, its better to use the LWB Holden Statesman/Caprice instead. ...but I think the LWB models might work better as Buicks (like the ones sold in China).

By the way...no one in America wants the 'Ute! The El Camino, and Ranchero were not big sellers. We can get by with the multiple compact pick-up trucks.

Great though the Commodore is, it doesn't fit well with what's left of Gm in the US. It's a bit close to the Malibu in the Chev lineup, and the Malibu is good enough to be a recovery car in its own right.

Hey WCF, what's with the attitude towards the LAPD? I bet you heard that "clowns dressed up as"-phrase in a cheap Dolph Lundgren movie and just couldn't wait to use it. Congrats!

Rodeo clown they call a police force? Someone has an issue with authority. As for the car... why? There's already the Dodge Charger, Ford CVPI (fleet only), Chevy Impala and the new Carbon Motors E7 (whenever it finally makes it to the departments) as police cruisers. It's unnecessary to add another car like this.

The "Ute" is way more popular here in SA than the Sedan. Not for the loading ability, but the guys here use it as Boy Racers. They strap a monstrous Magna Charger onto the thing, Chip it, and add a wing for stability. These cars push out close to 500 Kw (if not more) after they are finished with the thing. The worst part is they come in the most horrendous colours...All these glow-in-the-dark luminous colours. Bright purple, Yellow, Lime Green, Red etc. In fact a friend of mine has a "Purple Monster" As he calls it; which puts out more than 360 Kw on the rear wheels. The problem is he cannot keep it on the road, and often the control unit goes for a ball of....because it's been so modified. We have a very famous race here in Cape Town called "The King of the Mountain", where cars race up a strip on winding mountain road in the shortest possible time, and I can guarantee you there is always a Chevy Ute in the top three. Once charged these Ute's are a bat out of hell. In Fact this year the Chevy Ute SS won the "Performance Car of the year award" held by a popular magazine here in SA. They take things like, track time, looks, price tag, value for money etc. all into account and compare various "performance" cars against each other. From small hatches to super saloons. The Ute beat cars like the BMW M3, C63 AMG, Subaru WRX STi and more. It's really "Cheap" compared to other Performance cars and doesn't handle too badly on the track.

@mldrieling "By the way...no one in America wants the 'Ute!" Speak for yourself! I and many others in the G8 community were salivating at the prospect of finally getting another Ute in the US. Would it have been a niche product? Of course, but it's a hardcore enthusiast group. People are looking into privately importing left-drive Utes as we speak.

the g8 is already sold in brazil as the chevrolet omega... maybe it's not big enough to replace the impala, but could be a good offer above the insignia in the opel lineup. i know vauxhall already offers the top spec v8 version in the uk, so i guess it could work...

This is still the best car in the GM Line up, so i hope it finds its way as a chevy or a Buick!

I'd still rather they replace the fwd Impala with this.

Why Don't They Just Purschase The Carbon Motors Car? It's Purposely Built For Police Officers. The Ambulance, Fire, Post And Even The Milk Service Have Vehicles That Are Purposely Built For Their Purpose. Why Dont The Police?

rebadge it as a chevy, and phase out the malibu for the American market. Perfect solution, because no one wants a malibu...and the RWD segment is coming back. Plus, it would create economies of scale with production of other vehicles such as camaro etc.

australia has a proud history of home grown rwd family saloons. and the latest models (GMs' Commodore and Ford's Falcon) are the best yet - both with full 5 star safety rating and very good real world fuel usage. the fact is that th export commodore works perfect in big countries (South Africa, Middle East, China etc) and is great for the US. i think the issue is that the big 3 are trying to be viable as 'made in america' brands... makes sense to not axe locally produced cars if possible. problem is that labor costs are terrible in america, pushing up the bottom line production costs and being less profitable than cars like the G8. Those who say the US wouldnt like the ute have never driven one. there is no better handling production model pickup ever made. australia have a whole race series for them.

The commodore is so common down here in AU, big success.I think that the American cop car looks better than the AU one
