These are the freshest spy pictures of the 2010 Audi RS 5. The two-door sports car is due to be launched in July 2010 according to the leaked Audi rollout schedule. This model seen testing at the Nürburgring was wearing a new retractable rear spoiler. Rumours have recently surfaced of a lightweight version of the car which harks back to the Ur-Quattro or "original" Quattro coupe of 1980.

It is said that this model will weigh in at less than 1,400kg (3,086 lbs) and be powered by a 425bhp (317kW) V6 engine running two turbos. This would be quite an achievement taking into account the fact that the Quattro weighed about 1,300kg (2,866 lbs). Information sourced from the German publication Autobild says the car will be ready in the year 2012 at a retail price of around €70,000.

By contrast the stock RS 5 is understood to be using the 4.2-litre V8 for its 450hp (331kW). Should it really achieve this figure it would be as powerful as the previous generation RS 6. It has an integrated rear spoiler, quattro AWD, two massive oval tailpipes and a choice of either a 6-speed manual or 7-speed DSG ‘box.

I have always wondered what the "Ur" bit of Ur Quattro meant. Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

I believe it's a way of saying Original-Quattro in german.

By what purpose that wing will give the downforce to the car, its too small, while the rest looks like the TTRS bodykit.

I think Audi always time the uber-RS models to totally sh*t on their BMW counter parts. This will cannabalize sales of the M3 in 2012 when everybody has forgoten about it.

FYI.......RS5 and M3 is a totally different competing class cars......

no they're not. they're both roughly the same size, price, and based upon the chassis of the mini-exec in their respective ranges (the A4 and the 3-Series). they also have similar power outputs and weights.

the A5 series is in the same class range as the BMW 6-series

The A5 is in the class range of the 3-series coupe: look at size, weight, engine offerings, and price. It makes sense. You can't pit an A5 against something that costs twice as much.

I always thought of BMW 3 series Coupe vs A5, 3 series sedan vs A4, 5 series vs A6 and 6 series vs 911...

i think that 4.2, biturbo is outdated. it was used on the previous rs6 and it has an output of "only" 450 bhp. which i think it is little. i know that the 4.2 aspirated has and output of 344-350 bhp. so 2 turbos are 100 horses. but let us not forget that audi has an aspirated 4.2, the one on the rs4 which can develop 420 bhp... without any kind of forced induction. i prefer that engine. id put that on the rs5. (maybe tune to 450...dont tell that THEY CANT, cause that bull.) if not, 420 it's ok too. i dont see the purpose of 2 turbos on that engine only to develop 30+ hp...in comparison with the rs4 engine. all in all, nice car, but a less nicer engine.

Apparently the RS5 will have a more powerful version of the RS4's 4.2L V8 (which is great news, its a fantastic engine). Its going to have around 335KW apparently. This Ur quattro sounds like it might be the answer to the M3 CSL and AMG Black series. I can't wait to see it.

the retractable wing a la R8 gives the RS5 that little extra spice that sets him apart from the competition, good stuff

u misunderstood something: the RS5 will come out soon with a 450 BHP V8. Besides that Audi is planning an Ur-Quattro revival on the A5 platform, this one is expected to hit the showrooms in 2011 with a Biturbo V6 and less than 1400kg.

I like the idea of this car, it's just a shame they built it on such a large platform. It's waaaaaay too big.

I wish they built it on the previous gen A4 platform

A5 (RS5) and BMW 3 Coupe (M3 Coupe) are in one class. You gotta be joking when you say BMW 6 Series and Audi A5 are in one class. What would be the connection? Because for sure the price, size and targeted markets are different. BMW wanted a Porsche (!!!) competitor when they firs thought about the new 6 Series. Well, they must have been joking over there in Munich as well but A5 and BMW 6 are completely in a different class.

So Audi fans have to wait 3 years for this car to be released! Merc will release the E coupe AMG and this RS5 will still be on test!

This car looks like the S5 with TT RS front spoiler and RS4 exhausts.

If they will be smart, then the 4.2 FSI engine with turbos will be on the next uber-auto, if not M3 will steal all their possible clients.

I am wondering almost everyday when i'm thinking at cars, why the AUDI stoped to produce the RS4 ... they must have been crazy to kill such a succesful model.

M3 is selling like crazy, M division announced that they had the best period ever in 2008, instead Audi didn't offered nothing to match it .. so i guess this have been a missed start - i just hope the RS5 will make proud and stand up to the heritage left by his ancestor, the RS4.

because now they have A4 B8 and the last RS4 was based on the previous (B7) A4. Also Audi entered into the mid-size coupe market with the A5 series. Just remember what BMW did with the current 3 Series. The also did focus more on the 3 coupe sport version (M3 coupe) and later on they introduced the sedan and avant variants as well from the M3... This is what Audi is doing now as well. The RS5 will be unveiled probably this year at Frankfurt while the RS4 Avant is set to debut 12-16 months later. It is unlikely that there will be an RS4 Sedan again because Audi is introducing on July 16, 2009 the A5 Sportback which will compete in the 4-door-coupe segment and it's quite sure that there will be soon a S5 Sportback and RS5 Sportback.

It's all about product life-cycles. In 2011-12 it is possible that there will be a period when Audi offers a wide range of RS cars, including RS5, RS5 sportback and RS 4 Avant while BMW will renew its 3 Series and for a short time there will be no M3 available on the market...

Truly pathetic... Then again, I would be scared too if I was a BMW fan, look at what happened when the B7 RS4 came out. Looks like we are definitely in for a repeat with the RS5.
