Audi to cancel 3.2L V6 engine and S8 for 2010
Audi A4 3.2 V6 FSI engine

Major changes for the US

According to recent reports, Audi of America has major product changes for 2010 including the elimination of both 3.2-liter VR6 and 3.2 V6 FSI (90 degree) engines as well as the death of the S8.

The Volkswagen-derived 3.2-liter staggered six VR engine has a long history (almost 20 years) in the VW/Audi lineup and as of 2009 it was featured in the A3 and TT while the FSI V6 in the A4.  Although no direct comments from Audi specify the reason behind dropping the 250 horsepower (265 hp in the A4) engine, it seems that the engine's take rate was far below expectations, especially when it had to contend with the more efficient and only slightly less powerful 2.0-liter turbo.

While slow sales are likely to blame for the 3.2-liter's demise, the S8 and A8 W12 are getting the axe because Audi is preparing to launch a new A8 in 2010. It remains unclear if these models will return to the lineup after the next-generation A8 is introduced because they also posted less than stellar sales figures.

Now that the big news is out of the way, the other death for 2010 is the elimination of the front-wheel drive Audi TT with the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

Despite all this doom and gloom, Audi will introduce US consumers to the new S4 sedan, add an entry-level 2.0-liter turbo A5 coupe, and launch the highly anticipated R8 V10.

There was NEVER a V6 in the Audi A3 nor the TT. These were VR6. If you don't understand the differences, google-, yahoo- or wtf-it.

the German Audi website called it a V6 , i think they might just know something about their engines...

Justbored, the article is referring to both VR6 narrow angle (15 degrees) engine as found in the TT and A3 as well as the 90 degree V6 in the A4. I will edit the story to reflect this. [UPDATE] The story has been edited to be more specific. Sorry for the confusion.

@Sedaer: There was NEVER a V6. These low degree VR6 engines have several differences to a wider degree V6. Volkswagen built these engines to offer a high displacement in small cars like the Golf/Rabbit/A3/Leon, cause they didn't want to go the high-revving way. Too bad, that they go now with the turbo 4's, cause the VW turbo 4 sound as boring as diesels.

I would bet that the w12 will be available as soon as the next gen appears...lots of them around here, but the last time I was in the US, there was very little audis around, so I understand why they would axe it there...wonder why yanks havent warmed up to audi, but have to BMW and MB...

A VR6 *IS* a V6. just with a narrow angle between the V. Perhaps you are being a little pedantic. After all, the R bit of VR6 is more a marketing term than a recognised engineering definition in reality. That picture looks like a V6 to me. I guess it's the longitudinal one in the A4. Different to the latitudinal one in the Golf platform cars.

the vr6 is a mixture between inline six and v6 - the angle should be 15 degrees so ist more a inline than a v6. but in the a4 it was always a real v6, not the vr6 as used in the tt, golf and a3. the vr6 was installed cross, the normal v6 in the a4 along

The current VR6 is a 10 degree DI V6 sharing one cylinder head. Its only party trick is combining the two cylinder banks under one cylinder head. Its not quite the novelty it once was. However, quad-turbo W-16s are still novelty items...

The trend does point towards smaller, turbo engines all around.

And what does this mean for the US-spec Q5? It is only available with the 3.2 at the moment, so will it get the retuned 2.0 (258lbft tq) from the A4, or possibly the SC'd engine from the S4 (less likely)?

Well there's the 3.0T to likely replace the 3.2 in the Q5. They already have it in the A6.

For the gas that my 3.0 eats, it really isnt a that good of a german engine. I could care less about the 3.2... Too bad about the S8 though!

I'm sure that once the new A8 comes they will bring out a performance model, probably the V8 in the upcoming RS5 or the V10 in the RS6. I'm curious to see what the engine will be in the base V8. Maybe the RS4 4.2 or even the RS5 engine and seal the deal with the V10 in a possible S8.

I heard a rumor that Audi will use a 4.0L TFSI supercharged V8 engine in the D4 A8, in essence a larger verion of the 3.0L TFSI engine in the S4/A6. This seems to make sense as it would be similar to how BMW removed two cylinders from the M5's V10 to make the V8 in the M3; only Audi are adding two cylinders (its not exactly that simple but you get my drift). I'm sure they will have a D4 S8 as well, a lot of people are speculating that a version of the RS6's bi turbo V10 will be used. I hope that their flagship saloon to replace the W12 has the 6.0L V12 TDI from the Q7 in it. I think that would be a much more interesting and unique feature for the flagship A8. Especially seeing as Mercedes, BMW and Jaguar will all be using petrol engines in their flagships. Only time will tell, I think these changes outlined above are probably for the best though, except for the S8 being axed, I've driven one and its a great car, an iron fist in a velvet glove as they say.

That's annoying, the S8 was the only Audi I ever really liked. =(

The S8 was probably selling poorly because it was slightly underpowered and overdue for a redesign. If they redesign the S8 and give it 500hp, I'm sure it will sell well again.

everyone seems to have missed something here... if they're dropping the 2.0 TFSI FWD from the TT, and the 3.2 VR6 is going as well, that means there will be no standard TT? there will be the TT TDI, TT-S and TT-RS and that's it... how does that make ANY sense?

There is still the FWD 1.8 TSI with 160hp, and also Audi could add in its lineup the new generation of 2.0 TSI with either 180hp FWD and 211hp 4WD (this 2.0 turbo is more efficient with variable cam timing on the exhaust side, giving constant torque at low-to-mid rpm and constant power at mid-to-high rpm, compared with current 200hp used in the Scirocco and TT)

That's exactly what I read and had to re-read. Sad, why was Audi making it so hard to get a manual transmission TT (had to get quattro AND 3.2) and now doing away with it all together? I would really like to move from my '06 GTI 6MT to a TT 2.0T 6MT for style, weight, handling, etc. but now there's no chance. I have to be able to row my own boat. So, the only manual transmission Audis we get are now: A3 2.0T, A4, S4, A5 2.0T, S5, and R8?? Great. :(

BMW 135i and Audi S3 are MT's and surely better than a stock TT with the same engine as yours and mine... hardly seems worth 'upgrading' to one of those.

zdenda20, I believe we have warmed up to Audi. Everyone I talk to thinks that they are gorgeous inside and out. I actually want an A5 so bad I can taste it. But here is the problem, they cost a tad too expensive and only someone with relatively deep pockets and don't mind paying more for a car that has less power and amenities for the money than the likes of their Japanese counterparts (Infiniti as an example)will purchase an Audi. Also, I think there may be a VW stigma attached as well whereas BMW and Benz don't have an entry brand to compare their vehicles with. They were born exclusively as luxury brands. Personally I don't care about the later. Perhaps dropping a 2.0 litre turbo in the A5 will make it more affordable, but I have drove the A5 twice and it's a porker that could use a few more horses to carry it around. I'm leary about that car having a 4 cylinder engine unless Audi can put it on a diet.

Guys! So what is the Artega going to use now? The I-5 turbo from the TTrs? Interesting!

Turbos FTW. Lower emissions, better fuel economy. Progression. Some will fight this reasoning to the death, but frankly I couldn't care how brawny my engine sounds when driving it. Bigger issues at stake.

DEATH OF THE S8 !? Are you serious? Does this mean that the latest and last production of the S8 will be de S8 2010 (actual one) ?!
