VW is testing both the Golf and Scirocco models with a new 2.0 liter, twin-turbo engine as well as a 2.5 liter, 5-cylinder from Audi

The corporate-speak word still used today is "synergy". But if VW wants to borrow some technology from Audi, such as lifting its latest 5-cylinder engine out of the TT-RS and placing it in an AWD Golf, then call it what you will.

But before we get to that, first come the Golf and Scirocco R20T models, featuring an engine that will up the power quotient on the Golf to better meet the competition, given that there's a 300 hp Focus RS and a 250 hp Megane Renault Sport prowling the streets already. VW has been testing the Golf and Scirocco R20T models over at the Nurburgring circuit with a 2.0 liter twin-turbocharged powerplant that possibly outputs about 300 horses too, according to AutoMotorSport.se sources at Wolfsburg.

Details on the turbo-twinning technology are not yet available but it seems VW will push the 2.0 liter power plant it shares with Audi (as seen in the S3 with 265 hp) to even higher levels than the current, rather tame, 211 hp rating in the Golf GTI and those 265 horses in the S3.

Also under testing in both those models in all-wheel-drive form by VW is Audi's new 2.5 liter, turbocharged 5-cylinder engine with 340 hp and 450 Nm of torque recently introduced in the new TT-RS. The models are designated by the attached R45 moniker and AutoMotorSport.se is reporting that even that powerplant may be getting a boost to 390 hp.

Now, that is engineering at work, no matter what you call it.

Now that the crisis is almost over, VW is flooding the market with rumors of increasingly ridiculous cars in their lineup. Nothing will make the stockholders happy and the shares go up like the "news" of more expensive and useless cars being in production...

Bull more like , if a government has to borrow 200 trillion to bail out a silly car company , then the tax payer will be paying that back for years to come... What ever comes out of all this is a going to be a sure winner anyway and will definitely be priced at a more reasonable figure than the others...power-train will definitely be better with more improved fuel efficiency and road handling...need i say more...just bring the R's i say and we'll all be happy as larry, well, me anyway so am looking forward to it :)

If Vw wants to put a 5 cylinder in it why not the 3.0 V6 TFSI from audi, it has about the same power. By the way it sounds very nice in an audi S5

most likely the 5 cylinder would be significantly lighter and smaller, a v6 could just not fit, also less cylinders and i assume bigger turbos means better fuel efficiency and less co2 emissions, which in some european countries gives you lower road tax

Finally..... It seems that VW is getting the formula right with this one. Call it whatever you want, but if they are going to be keeping up with the likes of the Ford focus RS and the Renault Megane Sport etc, then they will need to keep in this direction and just follow through.

Honestly, I don't believe these news. 2.0 TSI 300 hp and 2.5 TSI 390 hp for VW and not for Audi? Not to mention that these figures are not engineering anymore, but rather tuning.

Not sure I like VW having a better performing car than Audi. Since its the basically the same company wouldnt they rather have a lower VW at a cheaper price and premium Audi at a more expensive price? I dont get the point

Yeah 300hp from a 2.0 litre twin-turbo? Come on... you telling me the Ford Focus RS engineers were forced into the 2.5 litre V5 purely for the exhaust note? I doubt it... you'd need to utilise the 2.5 litre Audi engine to push this figure and over. Frankly, you're starting to look at so much money spent on a hatchback - a VW Golf - if utilising the TT-RS engine - that I reckon it'd be seriously niche. People can rant about 'fantastic' it'll be 'till the cows come home - and it will - but the fact is VW needs to sell cars. What with massive price increases recently, a Focus RS is already pushing it @ 25,000 GBP, new Golf not too far behind. Cost on the Golf R45? I eagerly await the news.

Don't get me wrong though... it's obvious most cars will roll out with turbo's in future, and when you have one, why not make it two... ie. BMW 135i and now the R20... all sounds great and true progression: decent power, efficient engine, low emissions... makes complete sense.
