We love this time of year when the northern hemisphere thaws and gates at the Nürburgring are wide open, for it is then that cars like this Volkswagen Scirocco R go play in the "green hell." The spied car was caught in ‘Ring traffic as it made its way around. It featured a new front bumper, a different look on the sides and rear. Overall it seemed to be a sportier-looking car than the standard one.

Relaunched in 2008 after 16 years of absence, the Scirocco was brought back for those who enjoy a spirited drive in a two-door sports coupe but whose pockets don't quite go Cayman S deep. Engines supplied include a 1.4TSI with 118kW (160hp) and a 147kW (200hp) 2.0-litre mill. This is the same engine to be used in the Scirocco R where it will make a rumoured 200kW (272hp).

According to spy sources VW is planning to launch the car at the 24h Nürburgring race which begins 21 May and at the same time reveal its cousin the Golf R20 with the same engine.

This is the spiritual successor to the iconic Golf GTI and about the only VW car worth discussion ! very tempted to put an order on for one.

Wow, looks awesome with that subtle bodykit. Just like the Golf R20, only sexier.

the scirocco is the best looking hot hatch car wich is for sale now. here where i live in spain , i often see in the street a 200hp white scirocco. im sure if it would be sold in US will have a lot of buyers.

This is the sweetest hatch. No tuning necessary. Too bad we won't see it this side of the pond.

Get a toyota sera and spend $500 on body work and you'll have your scirocco.

Sorry effington. But only in FWD. Tho I would not mind seeing one AWD, 2.5L turbo too.

If this is based on the 4 motion r20 golf then it could well be 4wd.

4motion is not a permanent 4WD... it only gives torque to the back wheels if the front wheels already spin: it sucks. I think the R20 will come with ESP which you can't switch off, and electronic front differential. Don't know how you say it in the US... like "the neighbor's grass is always greener then yours"... I wouldn't mind if they didn't sell the Scirocco here in Germany, I don't like it at all (esp. back end), the Focus RS looks much better imo (most likely drives better too, the 200hp Scirocco only has about the same Nordschleife lap time as a '98 Integra Type-R, which is over 10 years old).

Looking forward to listen if the R20 engine has an engine note, as the current Scirocco models are all dead silent.

The regular 4Motion from VW usually sends 90% torque to the front wheels and 10% to the back wheels. So it's kinda permanent 4WD. And ESP could be switched off at all VW models as far as I know. Focus RS FWD design is just a facelift to regular Focus, while Scirocco has a much sportier shape.

Will this be in FWD or 4motion?

Sure you can switch the ESP off - you can with all cars equipped with it. The Scirroco and GTI will only be front-wheel drive. What the Scirroco has as electronic aids (a good few more than my MK5 GTI - booh!): ABS(Anti-locking Brake System), ASR(Anti-Spin Regulation), EDTC(Engine Drag Torque Control), EDL(Electronic Differential Lock), EBD(Electronic Brake-force Distribution), ESP(Electronic Stability Programme) with driver steering recommendation, brake assist and EDL (Electronic Differential Lock).

Only car I know using the modified 2 litre TSI engine in a '4motion' config is the Aud S3 and I think it will be kept that way with all VW's having FWD only.
