A Santa Monica-based advertising agency called Juggernaut Advertising has responded to an outdoor Audi A4 commercial in what might become a mini advertising war with BMW. Audi had placed a billboard featuring the new A4 on the heavily-trafficked Santa Monica Blvd in California. The commercial has the headline "Your move, BMW" in an apparent challenge to the fellow German.

Juggernaut Advertising, on behalf of BMW, then placed a billboard on the opposite side of the road featuring the M3 Coupe and the word "Checkmate" on it. The advertising game played by the two brands may not have started out as a game of virtual commercial chess but it looks to be shaping up as such.

Some might see BMW's response as being too heavy-handed considering that Audi did not bring out its big guns to the "chess board" but a rather pedestrian S-Line A4. For the moment it looks as though BMW called on its powerful queen piece after being threatened by a mere bishop. Perhaps the current lack of an RS model in that range could be the reason? Nevertheless Audi's response will be much anticipated.

An obvious reply to this would be for Audi to respond with a billboard featuring the RS5 and the line: "Really? Check again BMW.."

@dorkington: That might make sense on 4chan but in the realworld, "checkmate" is a finisher. Any response from Audi would probably end up in them looking like sore losers. On another note, BMW made the right move to put one of their best cars on the billboard to top the "regular" A4. That's an obvious reference to chess: better piece, better location, checkmate!

True that. that fugly panamera doesn't deserve to be ontop of anything. Maybe a load of piled up car in a scrapyard. If the Panamera was on top of those billboards, it would be best to say 'GAME OVER.'

ha ha made my day as well. audi are known for stoopin to levels of mentionin bmws and mercs in their ads but this is just embarrasing.. not to mention 'BMW' are the largest words on the audi ad... fail bigtime.

The annoying thing for Audi is, BMW's board is so final that any response Audi could make would make them appear sad. I think you just have to give this one to the Bavarians and their marketing department.

they are both Bavarians :) Audi can make a blank board with "Touche" on it and put this board with the R8 V10 further back. would make Audi seem like they have some humor and the better sportcar.

Bavaria has won either way. Both companies have their headquarters in Bavaria, and if you look at the map, you'll realize that Audi sits right in the heart of that state.

Hold on, wait a minute guys, check this out right here: Audi knew Bavaria (and possibly Stuttgart) would retaliate. I think it's all about the upcoming Audi RS5! If you watched the video of the RS5 at the Nurbugring you might agree with me that Audi's got a contender. Look at the size of the air intake opening on the front apron, the size of the twin exhausts, and listen to the Phenomenal Abnormal "ROARING" Sound Of the Car not to mention the screeching tyres and pace, this isn't a normal V8! I suspect Audi's discovered the RS5 might have an Edge over the 335i, M3 and C63 AMG and they're trying to provoke their rivals into a war that they know they'll eventually win with the release of the RS5. I mean would anyone be silly enough to provoke someone they know will pulverize them? It's like sending your lil Bro to provoke someone who you know you can Beat up! If thats the case, i guess Bavaria's fallen for it. They took the bait hook line and sinker! Audi knows what they are doing, they're gettin things heated up for the eventual "FOOLS MATE" They want to hand to the rivals!

yeh, i dnt like Audi anymore theyre just to cocky. (well at least their advertisments make it seem that weigh) I knw their ads are supposed to make Audi look more dominant or cool or whatever, but it has the adverse effect on me, like "if ur cars are so good why must you put down everyone else?" so yeh, im glad BMW put Audi in their place.

First off; putting up and M3 to a stock A4 is just a bad move in itself for BMW (what your stock 3series can't compete?). That's like BMW putting up the 328 and saying your move Audi. And Audi retaliating with the RS5, different story, they wouldn't do that. And for all those bagging on Audi, if you don't drive one, you don't know. Audi is about refinement; a careful balance of luxury and sportiness. Let's take the last 10 years, BMWs have always out horsepowered Audi, whoopdeedoo! Horsepower is what naive people look at. Let's take torque figures into account, or creature comforts. I'd rather hold onto my 2000 A4 any day than drive a new Bangled 3 series. Like the R8, may not run 200mph, but who cares, when are you going to drive it that fast. It's a daily driver. It's about the feel for the car not numbers. For those that embrace that theory have a better driving expirience and aren't always looking for why their car is better than the next guy. Grow up people.

It was Audi's arrogance that started this ridiculous feud. why the hell should BMW use their regular 3 series? They can use whatever the hell they want! besides, the 3 series is a better car than the A4 ...and always has been!

Actually, saying that the 3 series is better than the A4 is kind of ridiculous, seeing as everyone else disagrees with you! Audi outsold both BMW and Mercedes-Benz in January, and the A4 outsold the 3 series in Germany for all of last year.

That's just my opinion, hardly a "ridiculous" one, is it? Just because Audi shifted more units, does NOT make it a better car. The 3-series BMW (past and present) has always been a better model than Audi's A4 range... they've always driven better, higher quality, and looked better... in my personal opinion.
