looks like the footwell is skewed to the left and it looks so small. That "hand brake" is located at a hideous place too.

its probably just the pic and that handbrake is located comfortably, well tats how it is on my c-class. not surprised tat this car has so many pre-orders. its bound to be the top seller for merc. plus the interior looks to be a much better quality one than the last one. i would get one with an amg package. cheers

50,000 company cars more like.
But hey if they can sell cars when there is no money in the pot the good for MB

Some company cars but taxis more likely ... E class are commonly used as taxis in Germany ... could that be a way to artificially inflate the sales figures ??

Vauxhall and ford used to have a rent and give back in a year scheme if you were a worker or knew someone who was family that wanted one , just to boost sales figures... there are many crafty ways to make a company look good.

I don't understand what "pre-orders" are. Either someone has entered into a legally binding contract - an order - or they haven't. Are these 50,000 orders?

Its like when you buy a book off amazon and it hasnt been distributed to the dealer yet , people either put a deposit down or pay for it and get the book or car first before others .

OK, so an "order" then. An order is an order regardless of whether the car is in dealer stock, production or whatever.

I cant believe already people have been booking them. First thing is that ive already seen the 1st one on the road and i agree to my old statement that the car from the back looks very ugly. In a way the old E-class looks more rounded, i felt this one looked lower and more boxier. As soon as i saw the new e-class i called the dealers just to ask if it had arrived. But i was told that the one on the road was the first one in my country but it has still not be launched. So i asked about the price and as soon as he told me the price i said bye and closed the phone. With that price lets say i can get a porsche! And thats for a E-350.

Theres a s***load of them driving down here (Prague) and I already seen the next gen facelifted versions (still with lots of camo and german test plates). At night, from behind, the car looks like an asian car, front looks nice tho...if they would make the back lights smaller, it would look a lot better imho

Has Mercedes changed its tooling and production schedule from cars past? A July release in the States seems early. Don't they usually re-tool in August during the holidays? The coupe and AMG early releases also show a certain level of desperation. However, styling aside, this is going to be a clearly superior car. CAR magazine said it has better drive feel/ride combination then a 5-series and the build quality could be old-school Benz. I hope I fit in it (unlike the c-class - hell, I'm only 6'-1"). I grew up driving 240D's so I'm looking forward to the E220 Bluetec in the US.

Saw this car in person at NY Autoshow and it looks really good. The only thing that bothered me was the gear shift behind steering wheel... argh.

What do they mean pre-order?
I saw a couple of these when I was at the Haag (Hague) last month.
I rather liked it in person except for the rear belt-line that looked rather high...just as it does in the pictures.
If anyone wants a decent proportion on the side profile, they should seriously consider 19inch wheels...atleast 18inches to be safe.
Anything less than that and the car will look very low-spec.

maybe the cars you saw were press cars for car magazine reviews or just some final testing, i saw a few Cayennes before the official launch.

50,000 people have made a big mistakes, they should have bought a Jaguar XF, the Jag is miles ahead of this bland Mercedes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
April 13, 2009 3:51 pm
It's clear the Jaguar is miles behind the Mercedes. The Mercedes has a great design, which is new, modern, and much better looking than the boring Jaguar.
I didn't ever see an article mentioning anything about orders for Jaguar XF's. The German cars in this segment are way above the XF in design. You can't expect Jaguar, who have a tiny budget compared to the German manufacturers, to come up with a "great" product.
April 14, 2009 9:40 am
the Jaguar XF will look old in a few years, the Merc will age a lot better, also the Merc looks a lot more imposing then the XF.
April 14, 2009 6:41 pm
not suprising, this car is pretty good looking, espically with the gear shift in the right place.
April 13, 2009 10:56 pm
Thats an old chinese-style commercial motivation. To allure more people to buy the same product, they'd tell you its out of stock and a lot of people are still waiting in line, when actually no one is buying anything! Because surveys says these kind of bluffs really works. People(the mass) really buy that stuff. And looked like its working very well !! I'm aure they'll raise the figure to 5,000,000 the next time, why not! same bluff anyway
April 13, 2009 11:11 pm
50,000 (Nearly!)...I don't believe it...more SPIN SPIN SPIN!...drop a Zero and it sounds more believable.
April 14, 2009 1:12 am
this car is cool, but it will never come close to the w124. that is the greatest mid-size ever, in my opinion. especially in 500E/E500 or the much rarer E60 AMG trim.
April 16, 2009 7:00 am
when will mercedes reintroduce zero maintenance costs for x miles. BMW and others
already offer it.
