Audi RS5 Engine Rumours Surface

450 horsepower expected for Audi's M3 fighter

We reported on this a while back, but now have further corroboration of some of the rumors about the Audi RS5, which is due in mid 2010.

As was predicted by the Audi rollout schedule that was leaked almost a year ago, the super coupe will charge into battle with the BMW M3 wielding a mighty 4.2 liter V8 that's tuned to 450 horsepower (331 kW). This is the same engine that's currently used in the S5, but with an additional 96 horsepower. A seven-speed DSG gearbox is expected, as well as a conventional six-speed manual. Quattro all-wheel drive will be standard, of course.

Why not the 525-horse 5.2 liter V10 from the R8 5.2 FSI? Hard to say; either Audi's had fitment issues or the 4.2 is considered to be powerful enough to compete with the M3.

Unless Audi has changed its plans in the wake of their untimely exposure, the RS5 will debut in July 2010. U.S. Audi fans may have to wait a year or two after the car's launch; because the seven-speed DSG isn't currently used in any vehicles Stateside, there may be a delay while the RS5 is caught up in testing for American regulations. With the M3 already a worldwide performance benchmark, however, it's a fair bet that the RS5 will eventually be sold in all of the major markets as well.

It's too slow for Audi to develop and introduce the RS5

That doesnt sound like a normal v8

Sounds like the R8...

If this thing gets above 13/18mpg then that is a massive burn on the R8! It uses the same engine while getting only 420hp out of it vs 450.

rs 5 shold be with the same 580hp twintorbo as rs6!

Wrong. The A5 line is to replace the A4 cabrio line-up with a coupe addition, therefore 4.2 V8 instead of 5.2 V10. Also, it would interfere with the RS6 and the R8 (I know, opposites, but the RS5 fits in with both). Furthermore, it will be tough for the RS5 to get all of that power down if there's too much. Most of all Audi doesn't want the RS5 to explode (remember the R8 incident?).

that engine will be reserved for the upcoming A7. which is basically a coupe version of the A6. so seeing as the A6 is a BMW 5-Series competitor, then the A7 would be the 6-Series competitor.

There's no better car than the BMW M3, there will be no better cars than the M3! Audi, Mercedes and Lexus are very good copies, if you don't belive go watch TOP GEAR and other channels with car comparisons!

Hahaha...just another typical BMW fan. Open your eyes god damn. If the M3 is that good, why did the RS4 kick its ass to the moon and back? The new RS5 and RS4 will crush the M3. Its no benchmark. Not anymore. Stop living in the past.

i like Audi and BMW , but the M3 is the better car. the 335i is faster on the track than the S5, it remains to be seen if the RS5 with the new sport diff can match the M3.

The M3 has always been the better car in this class. They are the benchmark in this class, so give credit where credit is due

scratchy996, the new S5 kills the 335i on track. With the new 3.0TFSI engine, the S4 was 3(!) seconds faster to 200km/h. Just an example. Black on white man. Facts!

"the new S5 kills the 335i on track". lol. check out videos my friend. heres one- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aHj0zbhjLZI. so in wat way does the kill take place here? its funny when audi fanboys try in vain to talk bull abt cars they havent even seen or drove. audis are definitely good cars but i find them dull to look at. all i can say is good luck to the rs5 to so call 'kill' the m3. i highly doubt it tho

Ha yeah right , TOPgear is just an entertainment show thats if you didnt realise that ... and Jeremy clarkson gets paid to say if a cars good or bad.

uh yeah, usually when you're a presenter on an automotive TV show, you get paid to say if a car is good or bad. you say that like its something different.

now if you're trying to say that an actual manufacturer is paying him to say that type of stuff, then that would be ignorant and false. yes, Top Gear has been said to be scripted and its staged in some episodes, but in no way are the presenters paid to say that type of stuff from an individual manufacturer.

so then why don't u buy an m3 and leave the critics to people who really know what they are talking about. If u like the m3 please keep it to yourself and if u really want to make a comparison first document yourself...if clarckson sais that TATA is the best car would you believe him??

Tata's Nano IS the best car in the world. It has enough "car" to satisfy a normal human's daily motoring needs! Why would you buy an RS5? For the thrill? Try going downhill with the Nano to get real thrills!!!

Both the M3 and the RS5 are nice cars, but i prefer the current CLK63 AMG

M3 is the ultimate driving machine. In fact the RS 5 will be a rocket, too but im goin to prefer the M3. The RS 5 is goin to have a V6 twin-turbo.

dbehmoaras
April 14, 2009 3:25 AM
Clearly the RS5 is going to have a V8. Audi said that the RS models of the A4 and A5 will keep the V8. Only the S4/S5 will get the V6T. Audi wouldn't put a 6Cyl against two competing V8s.

Elmo187
April 14, 2009 2:45 PM
its not turboed. its a supercharged V6.

I think that if the improvements Audi has made to the performance and handling of the new S4 make their way into the RS5, albeit to a greater degree, this will be not only one heckuva car, it will be THE car to trump the M3. Kudos to BMW for setting the bar so high.

Funny how everyone's trash talking and posting verdicts without any concrete reasons. I'm a german car fan, and I like Audis more than Bimmers. But I have to admit, Audi's are generally more relaxed cars; less involving and the driver feels a tad detached. Sure, they can blitz the track - but the M3 can do that too without being overly techie and preserves the menacing RWD tail slides and the FUN.

They'll both be equally good on the track, but the M3 will be a better driver's car and that's what matters in this segment.

Looking at the past 2 RS models namely the RS6 and the RS4 both had in the region of 50kw more than their competitors at the time. Hence, I would assume that the next RS4/RS5 should have around 350-360kw, no?

Audis supercharged 3.0 V6 is simply a fill in for a replacement twin-turbo six, which will arrive in a few years time. Their head engineer confirmed this in a interview several months ago.

Audi developed the supercharged version and they tested both the turbo and the supercharged for the new S4 and then decided that the supercharged version would offer similar performance figures to the 4.2 V8 but offer better emmissions and economy.

GermanCarsRule

The RS5 wont get a V8 for sure.
