potentially the least rugged and most incapable suv ever made. will struggle with wet grass. I advise against it.

you guys have got to be kidding right?? lol its not the most incapable suv ever made, its just that the people that buy these don't go off roading in them. its definitely capable, i know for a fact cuz i took my aunts X3 offroad and it gripped wonderfully :)

again as i said above.... the buyers of these vehicles do NOT take them offroad for the most part.

Buy it. It's cool and sporty. How bad can it be in off-road? It can't be worse than a sedan...

not for heavy off roading, some light off roading, with a little bit more space than a sedan.....buy it if its cheap.....

I ve been off-road in an X3... totally useless! Dont let the pictures fool you!
April 10, 2009 12:45 pm
LOL... do people who own X3's ever drive off-road? I doubt it. It's for mum's who take their kids to school and do the shopping run in them.

Even the Mercedes G-Class and The Range Rover were and are designed for off road & Military use...but like 99% of consumers never take them off the highway, or out of the shopping center parking structure! Yeah, the little X3 pretty much sucks offroad, but if it can really get 45 mpg, then it will be amazing. Buyers of SUVs like to sit a little higher while driving, want more storage/utilty space (yes, we all know wagons/estates) have more room though) but SUV drivers don't want a station wagon. Also, being a model/spokesman for the current BMW Safety Campaign for the X3 & X5...both models earned the highest safety rating in the USA. The X3 and X5 are VERY safe, and will offer the upmost protection in a crash! Good job BMW!

Now that's even more useless in off road conditions, not to mentionit is one hell of an ugly car from VW

I can't believe this piece of crap sold so many units. Yes, I have driven one and I wasn't impressed at all.

Why can't BMW just give up. This is a worthless peace of trash. No-one will respect you becuase it looks like something that fell out of the ugly tree and hit every branch, and you'll get haters for driving a SUV.

100 000 a year cant be too bad...there are those who talk talk talk and those who buy. two different people :)

eaactly, those who are yapping about teh off road and all this non-sense are probably those who are driving Tata's and Kia's. The X3 is a nice compact premium SAV that's well priced in the 3 Series (perhaps a bit more) range. If I am a person who wants more space than a 3 Series, loves the BMW brand, want the same economy as a 3 Series and someone who generally travel around by car to holiday detinations, then the X3 is my choice. Speaking of design though, the pre-facelift X3 was terrible with those black bumpers, but facelift actually makes the car look so much better. I must say that it looks even better than the GLK, but on par with the Q5. Itis a pity that in people's minds, the first impression was UGLY from tehpre-facelift model so it's kind of screwed for the current X3 lifespan.
So let's see if BMW will learn from their mistake for the X1.... if they make their X1 uglier by putting on black plastic bumpers or huge chunks of cheap black plastics, even if I intend to pay extra for it to be sprayed at the factory, I will not buy it because in people's minds and my mind, it would be a car that's got a cheap, non-premium image. As for those who wonder why the emphasis on a visual like that- it's because a huge chunk of a buying decision is on the car's design. If a manufacturer wants to put out cheap image of their cars, sorry I don't buy cheap junk, especially if it is a premium manufacturer like BMW.

It doesn't matter what's under the hood. This thing is so ugly, you cant even look at it. Q5 or GLK please.

Since when was this the only premium SUV in it's class? BMW can't have forgotten about Land Rover already?

Shame a mention isn't made of the fantastically low emissions on this baby, which should be around 170 g/km? In this day and age it sure is required. 'Educated' folk like 'hell666' miss the point. Sure it'll manage grass, and then some with that torque.

Did the last comment take? The BMW X3 has the worst ride quality of any car I have ever driven. It has a jerky transmission that fails to deliver any forward movement intermittently and it has fewer features than any other car in its class for the sticker price.
This car is so bad it will be my last BMW.
