Nissan has bagged the 2009 World Performance Car of the Year award via the indomitable GT-R. The other two nominees were the Corvette ZR1 and Porsche 911 Carrera. Initially from a list of 23 contenders a panel of 59 international judges narrowed the list down to ten, then three and finally the winner.

The Mobil 1-sponsored World Performance Car of the Year award is part of the World Car of the Year competition. It was created as a sub-segment in 2005 in order to cater for cars that have a sharp inclination to high performance but not to the exclusion of all other attributes. Part of the qualifying criteria is that each finalist must have a minimum production run of 500 units per year.

On the winning GT-R one judge observed, "The drive of the GT-R, especially on a track, reveals an incredibly flexible all-wheel-drive chassis that lays down the rubber whenever you request it... for $77,000 it may be the world's best enthusiast car."

The Nissan GT-R is powered by a direct injection 3.8-litre twin turbo V6 engine with 24 valves. At its best it produces 480hp (357kW) and maximum torque of 588Nm (430 lb-ft) between 3,200 and 5,200rpm.

Past winners include the Porsche Cayman S in 2006, the Audi RS 4 in 2007 and the Audi R8 in 2008.

Press Release (Click to expand)

The 2009 World Performance Car award, presented by Mobil 1, went to the Nissan GT-R as announced today during the awards press conference hosted by the New York International Auto Show and Mobil 1 at the Jacob Javits Centre in Manhattan, New York, USA.

The Nissan GT-R was chosen from an initial entry list of twenty-three (23) contenders nominated by fifty-nine (59) World Car jurors from twenty-five (25) countries throughout the world.

While the winner of the overall World Car of the Year award must excel in a broad range of attributes, there is a segment of the car-buying public for whom performance - in its broadest sense - overrides all other priorities. Vehicles appealing to that clientele may be too narrowly focused to appeal to the masses, but it is an important element in the overall automotive mix. It is for that reason that the World Performance Car award was created in 2005.

Candidates for the World Performance Car award must demonstrate a specific and overt Sports/Performance orientation. They must also satisfy the same availability criteria as for the overall World Car award and may be chosen from that list of eligible vehicles.

Additional entrants may include newly introduced variants that satisfy the same criteria, but are derived from existing rather than brand-new models. In all cases, they must have a minimum annual production rate of five-hundred (500) vehicles.

The jurors voted in January 2009 in order to establish a top ten shortlist. The 2009 World Performance Car was chosen from those finalists as tabulated by the international accounting firm KPMG.

WCOTY's jurors observed that the "Nissan GT-R stole the headlines in the sports car world in 2008. This GT-R - the R35 - throws even former GT-Rs into the weeds via an all-new 3.6-liter bi-turbo V-8 providing 480 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. The drive of the GT-R, especially on a track, reveals an incredibly flexible all-wheel-drive chassis that lays down the rubber whenever you request it. Acceleration to 60 mph from a stop takes just 3.5 seconds, or a tick behind fellow Performance finalist the Corvette ZR1. This is a complete effort put forth by the normally conservative Nissan and the pleasure is in doing laps of a favorite circuit and feeling the sheer capabilities of the car. For $77,000 it may be the world's best enthusiast car."

"On behalf of the global team of designers, engineers and others behind the development of the Nissan GT-R, Nissan proudly accepts the 2009 World Performance Car of the Year award. This recognition validates their unique vision in creating a true world supercar that can be enjoyed by anyone, anytime and anywhere. Beyond power, beyond performance, GT-R goes beyond expectations. Thank you, jurors, for this unexpected honor," said Brian Carolin, Senior Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Nissan North America, Inc.

The top three contenders for the World Performance Car were the Nissan GT-R, the Corvette ZR1 and the Porsche 911 Carrera.

Mobil 1 announced its sponsorship of the World Performance Car award in November 2007. "Over the past several months, it has been our pleasure to see three Mobil 1 partners recognized for their automotive engineering excellence and vie for the world's top performance car honor," said Nancy Carlson, strategic global alliances - sales director, ExxonMobil Lubricants & Petroleum Specialties. "For more than 35 years, ExxonMobil research and engineering teams have collaborated with auto manufacturers around the globe to ensure that Mobil 1, the world's leading synthetic motor oil brand, continues to deliver exceptional protection for all types of vehicles and evolving engine technologies. Consequently, we know first-hand how deserving all three finalists are for this recognition and congratulate everyone at Nissan and the team behind the Nissan GT-R for earning the title of 2009 World Performance Car."

Previous World Performance Car winners were the Audi R8 in 2008, the Audi RS4 in 2007 and the Porsche Cayman S in 2006.

Now in their sixth year, the annual World Car awards have become one of the world's most prestigious, credible and significant programs of its kind.

The awards were inaugurated in 2003, and officially launched in January 2004, to reflect the reality of the global marketplace, as well as to recognize and reward automotive excellence on an international scale. The awards are intended to complement, not compete, with existing national and regional Car of the Year programs.

The awards are administered by a non-profit association, under the guidance of a Steering Committee of pre-eminent automotive journalists from Asia, Europe, and North America. There is no affiliation with, nor are the awards in any way influenced by any publication, auto show, automaker, or other commercial enterprise.

i still don't get why people compare those two cars. the ZR-1 has HOW much more horsepower than the GT-R? yet it only beats the GT-R around the ring by HOW many seconds?? nuff said. seriously... stop being 5 and open your eyes. two very different cars in power output. V6 vs. V8, 485 (approx) vs. 681 hp.... comon now haha

You can't drive the ZR1 on any slippery surface, carry more than one passenger, and with all of 638hp and lighter weight, it only barely bests the GT-R in acceleration. With carbon ceramic brakes, it only barely bests the much heavier GT-R with it's iron rotors. Again, much lighter weight, 335mm rear tires and it doesn't handle any better or get better gas mileage. The ZR1 is also much more expensive, and it doesn't even have a partition between the trunk and seats... for over $100K! In every aspect... yeah, right...

Yep it's the best, maybe a tie with the ZR1 would be more fair, but that's real life with winners and losers, not like the ZR1 it's a loser by any standards.

well is thier any thing eles out their..........no

the zr1 dose not have the quality and dose not handel as well

April 10, 2009 2:40 AM
WRONG!!!

ZR1 went 'round the ring faster. And that's the ultimate testing ground for handling!

personally, I think a tie is in order here.

And so the ZR1 should be faster around the ring it has more hp and is lighter than the gt-r.

dbehmoaras
April 10, 2009 3:16 AM
Well, it is faster. Look it up. But it is not lighter. Check your facts before posting, please: ZR-1:~3,350lbs; GT-R: 3,075lbs

This battle will rage on for ages. I like the ZR-1 better because it looks and sounds so much better.

April 10, 2009 7:51 AM
Um I think you need to check your facts. The GTR is a little over 3800lbs

mortz
April 10, 2009 3:52 AM
On the nurburgring records, ZR1 620hp at 1519kg, Nissan gt-r 479hp at 1740kg. so dbehmoaras maybe you should take your own advice and get your facts right.

steelerfan2009
April 10, 2009 5:18 AM
exactly, dbehmoaras you need to look up your numbers again the gtr is a lot heavier than the vette.

Aesthetics
April 10, 2009 4:02 AM
if we use your logic morty...why on earth should the ZR1 be in place because there are so many cars far 'faster'. this is about being the 'better' performance car and not the 'faster' or fastest for the price, the vote went to the GT-R and it is so clear why. honestly i would buy the Z06 because thats me, i will live up to its bad built quality, bone breaking rock hard suspension and painful aspects just for owning a 7 liter V8 car rather than a twin turbo v6 but thats about it.

take away 'drag racing' and the GT-R beat the ZR1 into silly land in every single aspect.

If you read my posts properly i was just stating facts, i never mentioned anything biased about the ZR1 in fact i actually like it a lot but the gt-r takes my fancy as it has done since the first r32 gt-r, I'm intrigued with the technology and how it puts the power down, its cornering capabilities and in my mind humans are meant to progress and the gt-r represents a car into the future. And Aesthetics you don't know my logic because you got it all wrong.....

steelerfan2009
April 10, 2009 5:16 AM
what are you saying the zr1 is better 0-60,or the same depending on the sorce, without launch control. better in the 1/4 mile, higher top speed, faster around the ring, pulls more g's on the skidpad. and better looking, but thats an opinion,so silly land noway......

Aesthetics
April 10, 2009 4:10 AM
to those ZR1 biased.... many cars are faster in the ring anyway

GTR shouldn't win. It's just a machine for going fast, not a car that you can have fun with

jamaicandude
April 12, 2009 10:50 PM
Last time i checked, going fast around a race track and mopping the floor with other cars that cost a lot more... sometimes more than twice as much is very, very fun. Hell, if you can't have fun driving a 480hp car that runs to 60 in under 4 seconds, pulls over a G in cornering and stops on a dime, you've got no business driving anything.

Congrats to Nissan. they proved what modern electronics combined with a good chassis can do. it's fast , practical , good value. i'm a 911 guy, the Nissan is not my thing, but it's a great car and i hope other manufacturers will take an example of the GT-R.

for its price, it gives you alot of bang. The subtle non-exotic design that says its a nissan rather than a ferrari wannabe. and the phenomenal performance that can be achieved with that much weight/burden is remarkable.

but zr1 and carreras also deserve its place as a finalist, nevertheless

Kudos to Nissan. Must be an incredible car. All you blokes arguing over one vs the other when (a) you've probably never driven either, or (b) been driven by someone else in one.

for those who said at accelaration zr1 is faster....

In our instrumented testing, the 3,836-pound GT-R teleported to 60 mph in a drama-free 3.3 seconds, thanks to its launch control function, and turned in a blistering 11.6-second quarter-mile at nearly 121 mph.

zr1 facts: 0-60 mph in 3.4 seconds 0-100 mph in 7.0 seconds Quarter-mile elapsed time of 11.3 seconds at 131 mph

whose the faster?

Japanese manufacters may have a time producing cars within the 280PS range. However, who says Japanese guys couldn't build fast cars after that regulation is cancelled in 2005 ?? Every time if there's a European or American Sports Car comparing to a Japanese Sports Car, there would be a massive debate on that. For example, there are a lot of Ferrari-biased fans denying the fact that a Honda NSX-R that weighs 100kg heavier and 165PS less had beaten a Ferrari 360 CS. So why argue which car is the fastest?? Why not argue that the Radical SR8LM cheated and couldn't do 6:48s ??
