The Volkswagen Golf VI has taken the 2009 World Car of the Year. This was announced at the 2009 New York International Auto Show. It was chosen over the two other finalists the Ford Fiesta and Toyota IQ. There are three other categories: Green, Design and Performance which saw other nominated vehicles such as the Audi A4, the BMW 7 Series, the Nissan GT-R, the Fiat 500 and the Jaguar XF included. The WCOTY Awards are adjudicated by a jury of 59 motoring journalists from 25 different countries around the world.

In reacting to the news Stefan Jacoby, President/CEO of Volkswagen of America, Inc. said: "It is a tremendous honour for Volkswagen to have its global best selling model, the Golf, named the 2009 World Car of the Year. This is a great way to kick-off the new Golf here in America. We're excited for the arrival of the sixth generation Golf, which will be in Volkswagen showrooms later this year. Simply put, we believe this is the best Golf ever."

Launched in 2008, the Mk VI Golf has a range of petrol engines that produce anything from 59kW (80PS) and 75kW (102PS) to the sporty GTI of 155kW (211PS). Turbo diesels are also available. Transmission options include a 6-speed manual and a DSG ‘box. The car was recently awarded the maximum number of five stars during the EuroNCAP crash tests.

Reports suggest that VW will soon surpass General Motors as the second biggest automaker in the world after Toyota Motor Corporation. The introduction of the Golf to the US market should bolster these plans further. VW will start selling the car Stateside this coming fall. It will be available with both petrol and TDI engines.

VOLKSWAGEN GOLF NAMED WORLD CAR OF THE YEAR

The Volkswagen Golf was honored as the 2009 World Car of the Year. A jury comprised of fifty-nine international automotive journalists from twenty-five countries around the world chose this year's World Car of the Year, which was announced this morning at a news conference during the New York International Auto Show.

"It is a tremendous honor for Volkswagen to have its global best selling model, the Golf, named the 2009 World Car of the Year," said Stefan Jacoby, President/CEO, Volkswagen of America, Inc. "This is a great way to kick-off the new Golf here in America. We're excited for the arrival of the sixth generation Golf, which will be in Volkswagen showrooms later this year. Simply put, we believe this is the best Golf ever."

The Golf, a perennial favorite in the Volkswagen line-up, has sold more than 26 million units in 120 countries, making it one of the top selling vehicles of all-time. The new sixth generation Golf first debuted at the Paris Motor show last fall, and made its U.S. debut at this year's New York International Auto Show. The Golf has been designed to be quieter, sportier, fuel efficient and present a clean, distinctive appearance that - staying true to Volkswagen - is fun-to-drive.

The new Golf embodies Volkswagen's product strategy aimed to sharpen the brand design in all classes and apply greater global consistency among model names. These steps are intended to leverage the offerings of the world's third largest automaker as it looks to increase sales and market share. The 2010 Golf will be available in dealer showrooms across the U.S. this fall in gasoline and TDI versions.

They should rename this award to "world's most bland car of the year", where has the Golf magic gone?

the Golf has always been the people's car of the year, every year.

I have to admit I am usually a car snob. But I love hatchbacks. Some of them are really fun to drive and they have the utility of an SUV, but get great gas mileage. One of my favorite cars I ever owned was a 2003 Honda Civic Si. Only sold in hatchback form in the US. This Golf makes me want a small hatch again. Especially with the 2.0L turbo 4.

A worthy winner ... of course there are some "better" new models on the market, but for the price it's hard to find anything to match the Golf.

The judges must have serve their biological purpose of giving birth and now they are waiting to die.

They are pathetic to choose a car as bland as the Golf

I think the XF should be car of the year. The new Golf looks too boring and dull, the previous one looks so much better and is way more charming.

Well, Golf win the World Car of the Year, not the World Car Design of the Year, which has as winner the Fiat 500. Even Golf Mk5 was the best sold car in Europe, a market producing better cars than the American one. Wonder why Golf Mk6 won this award? It is not a great design car, but it is a great car as far as driveability, comfort, technology and reliability are concerned. And all these for a fair price. Golf was and will be a reference for compact hatch class. Golf remains a people's car, but with engines over 200 hp and full specification becomes almost a premium car.

The Golf was never the reference. If you consider, "what" they changed from the Mk4 to the Mk5/6, you can assume that there are some japanese cars as benchmarks for the Golf. Well they still failed to built a proper N/A engine and the turbo'ed ones still sound as boring as diesels.

I can't believe that a 2009 World Car of the Year award was given to a restyled version of a model launched in 2003. The Fiesta is lighter, better finished and way more attractive than its predecessor, and it doens't need 1.8 or 2.0 engines. Do I need to say anything else?
