There's no doubt that a full-size Infiniti flagship sedan, powered by the Nissan GT-R's 473-horsepower twin-turbo V6, would be an entertaining challenger to the Mercedes S-Class and BMW 7 Series. Unfortunately, with sales of full-size luxury cars down and corporate belt-tightening becoming a new way of life, such a car is unlikely to happen.

Rumors of an all-wheel drive Infiniti flagship to replace the almost-forgotten Q45 have been flying for a couple of years now, and the GT-R-powered Essence show car that debuted in Geneva helped to fuel them. More recently there was talk of such a car hitting the street by 2012. Edmunds' Inside Line reports that neither vehicle will get the green light. With market conditions faltering, Infiniti's dealers have told the parent company that a higher-volume vehicle will do more good than a high-profile, low-production flagship. This lends credence to reports that Infiniti is developing a new mid-size luxury sedan that'll meet BMW's 5 Series head-on.

Brian Carolin, Nissan's senior VP of sales and marketing, said, "It's fair to say that there's nothing in the product plan for an Infiniti flagship right now. It's just not a priority in today's climate."

And as a result of the reference to the 5 Series competitor, the claws come out to say that Japanese cars have no right to be compared to the German marques. I'm clearly a BMW fan, but if Audi can be seen as a competitor to Benz and Bimmers, so can Infiniti.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the M series of the Infiniti a direct competitor to the BMW 5 series? So if they are planning a direct head-on with a new mid-size luxury that will compete with the 5 series....then what would happen to the M35/M45?

They re coming out with a new generation for the M. Remember how the M crushed the competition!

I dont buy it. Thats a hot car. When the recession alleviates, this car will resurface. It looks and seems too good.

the car is not dead , Mr. Jackson...it is merely SHELVED in the face of the lethargic economy . much like Porsche deferred the production of the Panamera some years back under similar circumstances . one thing is certain though , the Nissan Infinity flagship sedan looks INFINITELY better than Porsche's HUMPBACK WHALE of a glamourized station wagon car - the Panamera that is .The Infinity matching the Panamera pound for pound in the areas of performance , build-quality , and styling especially in the interior design and fitment department where it doesen't have to take inspiration from a mobile phone to make a statement in elegance . 'makes one wonder at why nobody at the Porsche camp came forward all this time to claim authorship of their fat-assed Big Bertha who underwent a Corvette facial transplant .

Mr. Carolin's quote stands, for the moment, as the final authority: "nothing in the product plan" suggests strongly that the vehicle is gone rather than temporarily shelved. If/when the car resurfaces on a production track, we'll happily report its resurrection.
