i don't understand why they're using the 5 Speed auto for the regular E250 CDI and 7G-Tronic for the 250 CDI BlueTEC... why not just use the 7G-Tronic for the regular one as well? the E250 CDI would probably be the pick of the litter if it wasn't for the duff 5 speed gearbox that Merc really should replace

BlueTec package is overall geared for fuel saving. 7G is more fuel efficient whilst 5-speed is for better performance which compromises fuel efficiency. Also 7G costs more. I'm not sure if you know this but the S65 / SL 65/ SL 65 Black AMG all use a 5-speed auto not the 7G.

yeah i was aware of that. the 7G-Tronic can't handle the torque from the 55 AMG,600, 65 AMG engines. but the 5 speeder on the SLK 200 i owned for a while was God-awful. i'm considering getting the new E-Coupe but the 350 CDI purely because i don't have to deal with a crap gearbox.
and i don't agree with your comments about performance. if you look at the performance figures for the SLK 280 and 350, the 7G-Tronic is faster than the manuals

I doubt the lack of 7G-tronic in the normal models is for performance reasons: surely the 7G is also better at that, given it's larger number of gears, faster shift times and more advanced logic. I'm guessing it's merely a cost-related issue, that they intend to fix come next facelift and/or model year, in the smaller CGI models too.
Also the V12 models using a five-speed tranny rely on it because the 7G isn't rated for that much torque/kw. I'm saying_A_tranny cause I doubt it has much to do with the 5-speed on the smallest engines. Principle/design perhaps, but in a much more durable package.

nope what about the 7spd MCT in the amg models. do a little reading kids.

Umh,I don't think I've mentioned anything about that? If you're referring to the comments made by other users, they're right, the V12 models do utilize a five speed box. Whereas the SL63 AMG has the MCT, which isn't up for more torque either, not in its present incarnation, anyways. That's due to the fact that it's essentially a 7G-Tronic with a ZF-Sachs startup clutch.

to zimstyles: what about the 7 speed MCT? that tranny is only used on the v8 (6.2 litre) amgs. the v8s make a lot less torque than the v12s. they even make less torque than the old 5.5 litre kompressor engine. the v12s use the 5 speed. do a little more reading, too...

The E250 appears to be the tipping point at which South Korea moves above Germany in proficiency of designing luxury cars.
