Testing season is now in full swing at the Nürburgring where MINI was caught testing their upcoming SUV supposedly named, Cross or Crossman. Recently the BMW X1 was spied testing on the same track, so it seems the BMW Group still puts a great deal of value in road-handling results for these mini crossovers/SUVs.

The MINI brand has always been about a fun driving experience, and the Cross which is reported to be based on the Clubman seeks to live up to that reputation. When it goes on sale in 2010 the Cross will feature all-wheel drive for some models, seating space for four or five and a host of fuel-saving measures.

From these and other spy pictures it appears the Cross will strongly resemble the MINI Crossover Concept in terms of exterior design. It is likely that the popular 1.6-litre petrol engine will continue to be the basis of power for the car in both natural and artificial aspiration. A high-performance JCW has been reported to be in development which is due a year later in 2011.

The first public exhibition of the production vehicle is expected to be at the 2009 Frankfurt International Motor Show in September.

Uhm, why? Why is it on the Nürburgring? It's such a lame idea, the Crossman. Does anyone actually like it?

I like it, actually. Quite a bit. I love small cars and would prefer to drive something B- or C-segment. I hike, bike, kayak, ski, and camp, and need something with the cargo room to carry stuff and the ground clearance to take a poorly maintained road. The current crop of compact SUVs are too large for my tastes, and drive too poorly. I want something that's not a chore to drive on a nice twisty road. Oh, and I demand 30-34mpg highway. So I'm a perfect example of somebody who'd buy a compact crossover that's been 'Ring tuned, gets great gas mileage, can be driven on a choppy road, and isn't the size of a barge. And I personally know 10 people who'd seriously consider this.

Oh, and nobody thinks you're cool for dumping on SUVs. Outside the echo chamber of car forums, crossovers and SUVs are useful cars that fit people's needs better than whatever glorified econobox you drive. People have different needs and wants than you, and your inability to understand that is friggin' juvenile.

Would anyone care to estimate the size of this vehicle relative to the X1 and Tiguan? It appears rather small - and that is good! I'm tired of medium and large SUVs. Small, nimble, powerful, capable, and attractive packages may be the next big sellers, imho.

that is one cute bad idea. like, uh, buying a chihuahua.

wonder if it's not too big for a mini in europe (where they do need small cars for their daily lives) and too small for a crossover in the us (where they expect more than a tall body from cars this style).

I wish a Mini Crossover and an X1 with hydrid solution at the good price of 30.000 EUROS; BMW Group can do it and let's go Gentlemen be inovative !!!

I'm glad it doesn't have dual rear wipers, but the dual tailgate still exists and looks odd. Macho men won't drive a car with pigtails. Such a small detail but it's enough to lose my business.
