Mosley reveals plans for FIA 'world engine'

Max Mosley has revealed plans for a "world engine" that in 2013 would be capable of powering FIA categories including formula one, world rally and F2.

On a visit last weekend to the rally of Portugal he said: "It would work in turbocharged form for F1 and then all the way down to naturally aspirated form for the lesser categories and in a turbocharged or naturally aspirated form for the world rally championship."

The FIA president said the planning phase of the project is in its "very early days", with the car manufacturers to be involved.

In the case of F1, he said "peripheral areas" of the engine will be open for development, including KERS and other energy recovery systems to be introduced.

Asked for further information, he said energy could be collected not only from braking heat as at present, but "from exhausts and even from the cooling system".

Referring to the universal FIA engine, he added: "If we can - and I'm not sure we can - find a way of combining all forms of motor sport in that system then this would be useful because of the huge sums spent on motor sport."

Uhh... If the teams aren't allowed to use and develop their own engines, then what's the point of F1 anyways? It's always been about showing what the cutting edge of technology can achieve.

This is awful. I might as well watch go-karts if all the cars are the same and they just want it to be cheap. F1 is cutting edge, innovation comes from it. Standardizing the engines makes no sense, why would Ferarri, Toyota, Mercedes etc bother? Mosely is determined to ruin F1. Cut costs fine, but it's still F1, it's the bleeding edge. I won't watch it if everything is cookie cutter either, so how will that help costs if the audience disappears?

I see, in 10 years time, all you need to run a F1 team is a little money and a some can of colors to paint your car.....

From the start of F1 and rallying years ago you have always had people tuning the best out of an engine to get to the front of the field , This will be the end of F1 and rallying for sure.

Mosley your a complete w***** and you should be banned from anything to do with FIA and motorsport for life.

There is a whole bunch of people overreacting here. It has previously been mentioned that a crate F1 engine could be developed for the non-factory teams to use, in much the same way that Cosworth used to supply engines in times past. This makes sense, as fewer than half the grid build their own engines.

The new information here is that MM would like the sme basic unit usable in many formulas, including WRC. This is going to be tougher to do. Sharing an engine between GP2 and F1 is plausible, but making that work in WRC as well seems a bit of a task.

F1 - used for future development of cars...without a motor, what could the manufacturers implement into their future cars? Ferrari F430 with KERS? give me a break...

Bad news, leave it as it is and offer the engine as an option for other teams if they want to get into F1.

That's what he was proposing, I really don't undertsand either Ecclestone or Mosley, first the silly medals system, now this!!!

I think somebody is going seriously senile over here.... I mean, what's next?? A FIA "World Formula"?? And then, how about a breed of FIA "World Drivers" to drive it??

Using standardized engine has been done in American racing scene and still it is successful from business point of view. However, for F1 and WRC, this does not make sence, because they are not only show business but field of technology development. If FIA wants to let participants use standardized engine, this category must be clubman category. F1 as a field for manufacturers competition, the regulations must be more restricted from social demand point such as fuel consumption, emission cleanliness, noise etc. but never from cost point of view.

Well thats clear i guess, i think the brands like Ferrari, Mercedes and others have decided to go for a separate championship. And why is this world engine not some kind of a green raceengine like it should

It's time that Mosley and Eccelstone get out of F1 they are both loosing the plot and are going to bring the sport into disrepute. Actually they already have the w#%^*ers.
