A tip of the hat goes to Carscoop for getting their hands on these official pics of the mean-looking BMW X6 M ahead of its debut at the New York auto show on April 9th.

The X6 M exudes a certain menace, given it's shifty identity as a crossover/coupe/sedan/SUV, and wears its M badge without reserve. It looks like linebacker, all shoulders.

Both the X6 M and the X5 M, will come with BMW's 4.4 liter V8 power plant with twin-scroll turbochargers pounding out an immense 550 hp. The same engine will also be put to extensive use inside the BMW family, as it will be going into the upcoming M5 and M6 models, or so sources say.

The X6 is a heavy vehicle but the 550 hp will likely bring its 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) sprint time to below the 5 second mark, as the current X6 xDrive50i, with the same engine dialed down to "just" 408 hp, does it in 5.4.

An M sprucing up for the X6 comes by way of side air-vents, quad-exhaust, newly designed front and rear ends and a set of five-spoked alloy wheels. The interior X6 M will come with a new M steering wheel and instrument panel along with sports seats at the front.

End of the horsepower wars? I don't think so. Bring on the next M5! E63 and RS6 you have been warned.

the next SLS has the same 6.3L engine but with a 571hp, so if they fit this engine on the E63 then we'll see what happened.

btw, i hate the front bumper it makes the X6 looks uglier!

Yeah, but the M5 is almost guaranteed to handle better than the Merc or Audi, which makes up for the lack of power with real performance. Case in point - C63 vs M3. But I agree, those bumpers are a huge let down. I'm not seeing any M-sport cues at all. The standard version looks better.

Also, do the paddles mean it's getting the M3's dual-clutch transmission? They couldn't possibly give it a slushbox, or the M5's robotised manual, that would just be painful.

That looks mean... I love it. And as with the base X6, it'll look immensely better in person, too.

The wheels are too small to be in proportion and the nostrils are getting bigger and bigger on BMW these days. and people will buy this ugly piece of **** because it's a BMW. no matter what, just don't buy it in red

Those wheels and bumpers look ridiculous. I'd take the xDrive 50i over this any day

Ugly looking front bumper, and whats with the wheels? Ewwww..

Must be one hell of a fast car. The X6 50i is already pretty fast from 0-60 and I wonder if this should have a 0-60 time of less than 5 seconds..which should justify the odd yet sleek shape of the car.

I have never liked the idea of M suv's, this looks a little ugly

It is not bad looking, but I don't see what's so special about this car. They could have made it look more amazing but they chose not to, something like asilver airdam slates, which goes nicely with the black etc. But shame, they always put minimal effort into that department. This black and red just doesn't go, if you add a bit of silver bits, the car will be so much sharper

Such a shame BMW had to slap the M badge on this thing. So what, they are not willing to make a Z4M the perfect car to be M'd, yet they are more than happy to give a huge, ugly, stupid car the best letter in the world :(

Im a BMW lover specially the M series. But why did they Drop the VANOS Technology(not using the Turbo chargers,Intercoolers,Supercharger)like the 3246cc in the M3(E46),the current M3 4.0L the M6 V10 engine. The VANOS technology made BMW a unique company.know its just like any other AUDI,MERC,VW,LEXUS..... Im quite disapointed.

@sebfill55, i do see where you are comng from but, ideally it is phenomenal but realistically, they overthrew mb and then as the leader they have to expand, sometimes it feels like it is not bmw but hell, they have the savoir faire etc... so bring it on

I don't really like it, it looks ugly and it doesn't have that flair of the other M cars , BMW could do better.

I don't even think BMW will ever top themselves in producing such a pointless, ugly, completely unneeded creation

This represents nothing about what M cars used to stand for and this is just all about sales

BMW M is officially wh0red-out... just an AMG copycat now

April 4, 2009 2:56 PM
Yeah you're right Mike , this doesn't represent what M cars used to stand for. and who said the horsepower wars are over ? they've just began.

Did anyone care to think that the reason the front intakes are so large is for cooling purposes?

I can see massive radiators through the holes, so perhaps it needs that exaggerated front spoiler.

FUNCTION over FORM that is the //M way

April 4, 2009 9:04 PM
if it's function over form, then why have they tarted up an SUV? you make NO sense!!

PS - i think this car has done my retinas some SERIOUS damage. it's *hideous*!

elhou90
April 4, 2009 3:18 PM
Even though it's a function (cooling) , this doesn't mean that it must be ugly.

TSLi
April 4, 2009 3:27 PM
lol, just be grateful they didnt put a line of LEDs inside the vents! There have been ugly M's, for example I still dont like the M6 very much, but never an underperforming M.

I'd rather have an ugly M, than an unaccomplished one. Hopefully, this handles and goes well. Pictures dont really do BMW's a lot of justice in the past anyway!

April 4, 2009 3:35 PM
Umm i know every person has its own taste but personally i love the M6 , come on ! admit that its a lot more better that this thing ! i don't know if i misunderstanded you but I don't think that the M6 is an unaccomplished car.

TSLi
April 5, 2009 2:05 AM
no no! Im saying BMW have never made an unaccomplished car in terms of road dynamics, BUT they have made cars that aren't to everybody's taste in terms of styling.

I just saying that we should have more trust in bmw, ungainly styling does not mean it will be poor to drive. E.g. M6 or X6M Many other marques make good looking "sports cars" that have crappy dynamics.. Sorry for the confusion..

I agree with some of the folks here...there is a white X6 that I see at the office parking lot everyday and it looks great. It's really one of those you need to see it in person kind of cars. I always thought that heavier cladding on the bottom end would make the X6 look more bad-ass...and voila...this X6M is it. I want to see it in white...or black. But being a Merc fan...there simply isn't any comparison to a G55 (or will it be a G63 soon?)

before we used to see negative comments on the x6, now people appreciate the x50 and criticize the mx6 tomorrow they will appreciate it

It's new front fascia design just isn't very creative. This SUV is trying so hard to be a sedan, it is almost funny... like a fat kid on a trampoline.

It's rear is the size of texas...and it's front spoiler gapes like a porn star. The X6 was already ugly to begin with, and I'm guessing the memo for the M version basically said "Rice it up!!" I have serious beef about the X6. Anytime I come beside one at the traffic light I make fake puke faces at the driver just so these unique individuals know that they spent 70 grand on something as sensually curvaceous as the morbidly obese; to know that they were brave when the said to themselves, "let's do something stupid today" at the dealership. Props to the X6 owners, for making every Aztek owner smile an understanding smile...

Environmentalists will love this thing. They'll love Audi even more for putting money where its mouth is. Saw one a one a while ago, typically with both xenons and fogs blinding the hell out of me (I saw it in the rear afterwards - lol). Looks dangerous. Like it's mount my GTI like mine's a poodle.
