McLaren, Hamilton lied, Whitmarsh comes clean

Despite the denials of Thursday, McLaren team boss Martin Whitmarsh on Friday admitted suspended sporting director Dave Ryan and Lewis Hamilton did lie to FIA stewards.

During a packed and dramatic FIA press conference at the Sepang circuit, he was asked if F1's reigning world champion told the truth relating to the Jarno Trulli safety car incident of a week ago.

"No. I think that Lewis was not entirely truthful, but we have spoken to Davey (Ryan). He was the senior member of the team and they went into the situation together.

"I had to take an incredibly difficult decision. I have personally known Davey for 20 years," Whitmarsh added.

He explained that Ryan, who has been sent home despite his 35 years of service to the Woking based squad, decided to lie "in the heat of the moment" and possibly due to his "high" level of sensitivity after being involved in last year's controversial Spa-Francorchamps penalty.

"Lewis was led by that," Whitmarsh said, referring to Hamilton's decision to also lie. "The team and myself are not only deeply embarrassed but deeply regretful."

Whitmarsh said a decision about Ryan's future, and indeed his own, will be taken after this weekend.

"I don't rule anything in or out," he insisted.

He tried to steal 3rd place and back fired in his face. Lewis is not a great champion after all. REPLY To hell666 He let him pass ON the track but WANTED to steal 3rd place from trulli of the track by not telling the truth.Honestly, if they let Truli pass and then report him, then they should be banned.

tried to steal? trulli LOST it last lap, and ended up on the grass, which under safety car rules it is perfectly permittable for lewis to take the place. Hamilton was ordered by the team to allow trulli back infront as no one was quite sure of the incident and decided to play it safe and take fourth. Hamilton did technically earn that place. the lying however is a bit sad, but in a game as competitive as F1, where teams are pushing the legal boundaries in every aspect of the sport, you can't really expect anything less. the Shell/Ferrari head of fuel noted in an interview with CarAdvice, "If we dont get at least 3 warnings from the FIA (regarding fuel samples) we aren't doing our job"

It's funny how many people hate Hamilton, on the track he did nothing wrong last Sunday! How many times has you been in a situation where you would love to speak your mind however you must follow team orders to avoid getting sacked. He is a great driver and the best proof is to get out there and drive well, put this stupid mistake behind them. Nearly every F1 driver has told a porky in their time, Alonso is full of them, Massa rammed Hamilton last year and denied it. I hope F1 can put this behind it and get back to the racing, this should have been one of the best seasons ever but it's already been ruined by politics.

POLITICS ?! I wish you and your team all the best but judging from how McLaren focussed on this chassis and this season compared to the 2008 season, I think that both the driver as well as the team will choke this season. Its incredible because McLaren is the most popular team in the F1.

@luke, I agree they have got it wrong this season, I will stick with them though as I always have unlike some people that will become Brawn fans. I would like to see either Brawn, BMW or Toyota win this season, it's nice for Jenson to get a win. I think this season will be a test of Hamilton and ultmiately prove where his loyality lies. Let's just get on with the racing, role on Malaysia ;o))

Trulli lost his position by his own mistake, and it wasn't a passing move by Hamilton. So it was a mistake to give Trulli his position back. Even though they were the ones who decided to let Trulli pass, they made a bigger mistake, by turning a blind eye to the Trulli's unfair punishment and deliberately lying to stewards, when Hamilton's answers to reporters about the situation are known to everyone and all the radio communication are recorded and subject to stewards' review! Then making a scapegoat out of their veteran employee Dave Ryan, I'm not going to call it a mistake, it's simply a shame. Now Hamilton cries, and tries to convince his fans that he's not a liar. What a childish thing to say that he was instructed by his team manager to lie. Please don't tell me that he's obliged to do whatever he told. I don't believe that any kind of contract can make a driver behave dishonestly.

a sad day really... we see indecision from officials, judgements without full range of evidence, teams lying to cover up... welcome back to the eighties! in today's racing world, where car telemetry, radio conversations, video evidence etc. come in to play, it is not possible to use the old ways. lets hope that this is a lesson to all. thinking of the advantage of this open info, the infamous incident with coulthard/schum in the spa race of 1999 - where coulthard (in a mclaren) caused the 13 car pile up off the start line... later in race, schumacher was in 1st by miles and lapping him in extreme wet and coulthard allegedly tested his brakes and schumacher (chasing crown from hakkinnen - also in mclaren) lost a front wheel (and the points that would have won him the championship). without telemetry info, radio info or even video evidence, the truth of 'did he lift? or did he brake?' will never be answered. we dont want titles won and lost based on cheating. transparency provides for clear resolution. remember also that precedent must not be set - if anyone can yield a place under safety car, it would be easy to get a championship contender 25 sec penalty/drive through - especially in a restart situation. (we may see kers based issues with this later in year anyway)

oh and i agree with serdar - Dave Ryan is copping all the blame and will be heavily dealt with simply to get the focus off hamilton.

Everyone is at fault. McLaren for cheating and instructing Hamilton to lie and using David Ryan as a scapegoat, Hamilton for choosing team loyalty over honesty, and the FIA for unneccasarily complicating and manipulating the circumstances, as well as introducing far too many politics into the sport. Its time for F1 as a whole to grow up, and enter into the real world.
