2010 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG Now Testing Virtually Undisguised
2010 Mercedes E 63 AMG

The E63 AMG comes with a 6.3 liter, naturally aspirated V8 with 518 hp and 630 Nm of torque

Since official photos and information were released earlier this week on the E63 AMG, it seems Mercedes has foregone the camouflage for its ongoing testing of the vehicle.

This E63 will be an arch-competitor to the always fearsome BMW M5, which Mercedes always tries to outdo with its more subtle, distinguishing charms rather than outright raging hormones. After all, a Mercedes is the car you buy yourself as a reward after your kids have grown up and moved on. A BMW is the one you buy right now even if you can't afford it.

The engine work on this athletic sedan has already been covered, it's a 6.2 liter, naturally breathing V8 (gasoline/petrol) with 518 hp and 630 Nm of torque. Certainly the power is there to make this a real road-munching monster in disguise, considering the base-version E-Class seems just fine being powered by a mere 1.8 liter engine (turbocharged to 204 hp). But as AMG has promised, the days of piling on more and more sheer horsepower are over, and the E63 features only 11 hp more than its predecessor. AMG has said it will focus on weight reduction and improved engine management to squeeze more efficiency and power out of what is already there. This E63 seems a good example of that. It's the subtlety that will win the day for this car.

Nice set of wheels, yes...But, hey, what's the price tag on this thing?  We'll have to wait until the E63 AMG makes it's public debut in New York next week.

Bro, the starting base price on the previous E55 was around 88K, with the new class coming out. It' probably be around 90k plus...

Everyone knows the weakness of the RS6; its too flabby and heavy. AMG probably think they can whop it on a track with 60 bhp less. The E63 just doesn't need more power.

Agreed they could take the RS6 on a track with the lower weight, but what about their original rival, the M5? I can't see this having a scratch on that when it comes out...

I think that the RS/E/M5 classes dont compete on performance anymore...if u spend that much money, u are bound to have a relationship to that car. couple HP here, couple there...doesnt make much of a difference imho...I know I wouldnt buy a MB even if it had 60+ hp...

Lucifer, I think a showdown with the E63 and the M5 is on the cards. Yes, its main opponent will be the M5, but there a bit difference in the image of the two cars. People have the perception that BMW is all about performance, and that it rightly true. They have excellent chassis', great engines, and a great "driving experience". Mercedes on the other hand tend to be extremely comfortable, but will rip your face of when you floor the throttle. As such, they will appeal to different people. They will be bought according to the likings of their respective buyers, which zdenda20 has made the point about.

this is astonishing, it's already more powerful the the RS6, having less number of hp doesn't mean it's weaker, yes they could make it more powerfull if they use the SLS engine which has the same 6.3L but 571HP

They can test the E63 for as long as they want, but it will be no way near as good as Jaguars awesome new XFR, even the M5 is probably better than this dull thing!!!

Well if you live in the states its people that think like that which puts the american car companies in a terrible place!! There are a ton of people in the US that work for these companies and its sad the poeple that live here do not take that in consideration when they are buying cars!!
