Priced $1,800 less than the outgoing model

Chevrolet has announced pricing of their newly redesigned 2010 Equinox crossover will start at $23,185 when it goes on sale in June. Essentially a replacement for both the previous generation Equinox and the Chevrolet Trailblazer, the new 2010 model features bold exterior styling and a vastly improved interior.

According to GM's North American vice president of Chevrolet, Ed Peper, "The Equinox is a superior value for our customers. In fact, the starting price for this all-new model is $1,800 less than the previous generation Equinox."

Power will be provided by two new engines which feature fuel-saving technologies such as direct injection and variable valve timing. The base 2.4-liter Ecotec four-cylinder engine produces 182 horsepower (135 kW) and returns an estimated 21 mpg city and 30 mpg highway. For drivers wanting a little extra oomph, there is a 3.0-liter DOHC V-6 engine with 264 horsepower (190 kW) which returns an estimated 18 mpg city and 25 mpg highway. While the optional all-wheel drive system will likely cause a slight decline mileage, owners of FWD models can expect to travel more than 500 miles (800 km) before needing to refuel regardless of what engine they choose.

The new Equinox comes equipped with tons of standard safety equipment including six airbags, four-wheel disc brakes, StabiliTrak electronic stability control, and OnStar. Other standard equipment includes a tilt and telescoping steering wheel, power height and lumbar adjustment for the driver's seat, a plethora of storage compartments, and 17" wheels. Although detailed specifications weren't released, Chevy did say that the new crossover can be ordered with an advanced remote starting system that will turn on the heated seats if the outside temperature is below a certain level.

Chevrolet announced the 2010 Equinox crossover will carry a MSRP of $23,185, including a $745 destination charge, for the FWD LS model. It goes on sale this June.

"Offering the fuel economy of a sedan with the functionality of a crossover, the Equinox is a superior value for our customers," said Ed Peper, GM North America vice president, Chevrolet.

Chevy expects its Equinox to have best-in-class fuel economy at 30 MPG with its advanced 4-cylinder, direct injected engine. It is available in LS, LT and LTZ trim, with available all-wheel-drive. Two new engines are offered, each with fuel-saving direct injection and variable valve timing technology. Vehicle highlights include:

  • New 2.4L Ecotec direct injected I-4 engine estimated at 182 horsepower (135 kW), which delivers an estimated 30 mpg highway, 21 mpg city (EPA certification pending)
  • New 3.0L DOHC direct injected V-6 engine estimated at 264 horsepower (190 kW), which delivers an estimated 25 mpg highway, 18 mpg city (EPA certification pending)
  • Driving range of more than 500 miles (800 km) with both engines, for less-frequent fill-ups
  • Six standard air bags: dual frontal air bags; head curtain side air bags and pelvic/thorax seat-mounted side air bags
  • Standard four-wheel disc brakes with StabiliTrak electronic stability control and traction control
  • Standard OnStar and XM Satellite Radio
  • "Advanced" remote starting system that also activates the HVAC system and optional heated seats depending on the outside temperature

Inside, the Equinox features attention to detail, including standard tilt and telescoping steering wheel, standard driver seat power height adjustment and power lumbar, and a number of storage bins: an oversized glove box, a closed storage bin in the instrument panel above the center stack, and closed storage under the center armrest large enough for a laptop computer.

"Getting best-in-class fuel economy and great storage for less than $24,000 is significant," Peper added. "In fact, the starting price for this all-new model is $1,800 less than the previous generation Equinox."

While the all-new Equinox carries a smaller price than its predecessor, the list of standard content is larger - including more airbags, power lumbar support, and 17" wheels. Combine this added content with the improvements in fuel economy, driving performance and available features, and the value proposition improves even more with the 2010 Equinox.

Trying to ignore the fact that this is an American car, and looking at it from a neutral standpoint, I can only say that I don't think this car will in any way help GM's situation. Why doesn't GM make an attempt to come out with something that doesn't look so ugly, moronic and bloated. Are they completely oblivious to the elegant and handsome designs that are coming out of Europe and Japan?

The GLK is not exactly handsome, and in terms of crossovers the Japanese designs are horrible. Not that this car is pretty at all, but I don't see how nationality comes to play into this thing.

Yes, the GLK is not handsome at all and as a matter of fact, the front end is ridiculous. But in terms of design, the crisp lines and compact design, with no unecessary elements and add-ons make the car look clean and stylish. This car, with its huge front end, strange bulges and somewhat incoherently matching panels just does not add up. American cars have gotten better, but European and Japanese automobiles are dominating the car industry in terms of product design and engineering no doubt. This is where nationality comes in, no matter how much you may want to deny it.

It sounds like a pretty bad decision to replace an Equinox with an even bigger Equinox in these times when everyone is trying to downsize. And not offer a Diesel engine for it. This car is really far of from being a compact SUV. Even the old Equinox is bigger than the Toyota RAV4 for example, and the american RAV4 is longer than the european one. This new Equinox is NOT a compact SUV, and as a consequence, will not be a fuel efficient car.

Please define "crisp lines." What a totally assinine phrase when discussing autos. As for the nationality quality related comments. The latest JD Power poll saw Lexus fall from the top to be supplanted by Buick. As for engineering being dominated by Europe and Japan? Wow, talk about not getting credit for anything. Also, why do people insist on comparing apples to oranges in the car debate?

If you need me to define 'crisp lines' for you, you either lack the intellect and vocabulary of an educated person and/or have not read as much as a decent review of a car, as the term is widely used to describe clean and effective lines. And Lexus was replaced by Buick in dependability, but did you happen to forget Jaguar as well? Then there is also the difference between reliability ratings and the engineering of an automobile (two completely different things), and if you need me to explain that difference to you as well, I'd rather not waste my time doing so. And in all honesty, does anyone take Buick seriously in the US? Maybe in China, where Buick is a major premium automobile manufacturer, but in the US, a Buick may draw as much as a scoff.

I would like to add in a bit. In my opinion the new 2010 Equinox is a well made machine, and is priced fairly as well. Also it is ridiculous that you guys would even compare a GLK, simply because Mercedes is known and prized as luxury. Also, the GLK is priced $10,000 more and not to mention the GL is $30,000 more. Do you know that $30,000 can be calculated to about 6 years worth a gas considering that one is using $400 worth of gas per month? And the GLK has almost 10 mile less to the gallon than the Equinox. Sure the New Equinox is bigger, but who decided that everyone wants to downsize. I for one think the crossovers look like a car mixed with a mini-van, they are just flat out ridiculous. There are people who still want the feel of a SUV, but only wish they had better gas mileage. The Equinox is bridging the gap between full-size SUV’s and compact SUV’s with a hint of a crossover look. If you don’t like it then don’t buy it. Even though GM isn’t at the top when it comes to sells, the New Equinox is a job well done. With its bold look and smooth curves; this vehicles may not say luxury, but it does say style. Especially with its defiant grill that stands out far better than the rest, similar to what one would see on a full-size SUV. But it seems it was just kept small enough to be manageable as a compact, and at the same time give you the space needed as a true SUV, and still have the smooth curves to give it a crossover feel. With its chrome trimming on the exterior and well designed dashed board and comfort in the interior, the 2010 Equinox has just created a league of its own.
