Ssangyong C200 Aero and Eco Concepts Make Official Debut

Ssangyong C200 Aero and Eco Concepts Make Official Debut
Ssangyong C200 Eco concept

New CUV expected to begin production in late 2009

SUVs are out, but urban vehicles embodying similar virtues without the unnecessary off-roading skills are still on the rise. The latest among them, Ssangyong's C200, debuting at the Seoul Motor Show. The concept was shown in Paris last fall. Ssangyong calls the C200 a "compact urban vehicle (CUV)," and it goes into production at the end of this year. Sales in the UK are expected to commence in about twelve months.

The little debutante is sized similarly to the Toyota RAV4, and is reasonably handsome thanks to styling by Giugiaro's ItalDesign studio, and the tall, chunky body lacks much of the off-putting styling that has characterized Ssangyong products in the past. Interior photos of the C200 Eco show color-matched green trim and an airy cabin. Monocoque construction and extensive use of aluminum in the suspension mean that decent handling is likely.

The C200 was shown in two distinct models, with a choice of three engines. A choice of 175-horsepower 2.0 liter turbodiesel or 1.8 liter gasoline engines is available in the C200 Aero, while the C200 Eco features a diesel-hybrid engine. A choice of six-speed manual or automatic transmissions is available, and the vehicle can be had with front- or four-wheel drive. The C200 steps up to become one of the smallest, lightest vehicles in Ssangyong's lineup, with a compact 4.4 meter overall length. Fuel economy should be good considering the vehicle's small size, and Ssangyong reports that CO2 emissions are cut by 50% in the Eco model. Euro NCAP crash testing is pending.

SSANGYONG SHOW C200, HYBRID TECHNOLOGY AND NEW ENGINES AT SEOUL MOTOR SHOW

SsangYong's new C200 model has been shown at the Seoul Motor Show in two versions and with three choices of power. The car is scheduled for production later this year and should reach the UK inside 12 months.

The C200 is smaller and lighter than current SsangYong models, promising much improved fuel economy and lower CO2 emissions. Dubbed a compact urban vehicle (CUV), the C200 Eco uses diesel hybrid power and the Aero version has a choice of a high torque 2.0 diesel or turbocharged 1.8 litre petrol engines.

SsangYong expects class-leading fuel economy and CO2 emissions reduced by 50 per cent in the Eco. Show cars have a six-speed auto transmission, but manual versions will also be available.

Styled by Giugiaro's ItalDesign in Italy, the C200 has a 2.65m wheelbase with an overall length of 4.4m. The car will undergo Euro NCAP crash testing before coming to market.

SsangYong also showed a diesel hybrid version of it's Kyron model at the Seoul Show.

What, a very decently looking Ssangyong!? Wow! Generic, but at least the proportions are right.

Yep, that's actually very nice to look at. I hope the LED lights stay. Given that SAIC owns Ssangyong now I would rather see this with the Roewe badge though. "Ssangyong" sounds dreadful to the Western market (I appreciate Roewe does too, but I can't bring myself to suggest this is badged as an MG!).

This rebadging to roewe brands may no longer happen (they did it to the Chairman W though). SAIC owns (51% share) but no longer control Ssangyong since they seek bancruptcy protection, its now controlled by the courts/creditors. And worse for SAIC they can't sell off the 51% stake of Ssangyong even if they want to.

The front end is definetly copied from Audi Q5, although is also similar to Chevrolet Aveo (radiator grill). Side line's coming from last gen. Toyota Corolla hatchback. Only rear end is original. But overall, when you compare this to current SsangYong models it's almost beautiful.

That looks awful. Ssangyong should get some decent designers who dont walk around dealers looks at new cars and go 'I know how I could ugly that up and sell it as a Ssangyong'.

Get some decent designers? Ssangyong have ironically answered your criticism by hiring Giugiaro's ItalDesign. OK it may not be a true orignal design (but still very nice) as its more Audi insperational at the front and so for, but its light years ahead better looking, so better looking that the existing models (espicially the rodius/starvic) are even good enough to scare away King Kong and Godzilla. At least this model was not involved in a pub brawl.

Lack of originality is killing Ssangyong off the global radar! Maybe they should learn few tricks from Hyundai and Kia and improve their fortunes. Even these 'Concepts' are not only dated, but are Audi clones!!
