Official information regarding the 2010 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG sedan has been released along with the first batch of official photos. The E63 AMG now makes 518bhp (386kW) and 465lb ft (630Nm) of maximum torque compared to the current car's 507bhp (378kW) and the same amount of torque. Mercedes-Benz is sticking AMG's 6.3-litre naturally aspirated V8 on this one. Performance should be similar to that of the outgoing E63 with figures of 4.5 seconds for the 0 - 62mph sprint and a top speed of 155mph (249km/h).

Despite the minimal increase in power the car is said to quaff 12 percent less fuel resulting in an average consumption of 22.4mpg. One of the components credited for this is the Speedshift MCT 7-speed gearbox found in the SL63 AMG. It has four driving modes namely Controlled Efficiency, Sport, Sport Plus and Manual.

The standard car comes wearing 18-inch AMG alloys with size 255/40 front and 285/35 rear tyres. There is an optional 19-inch rim available. In terms of exterior cosmetics the big AMG gets LED daytime running lights, a more aggressive front spoiler, a rear diffuser and four tailpipes as per current AMG standard issue.

It is expected that the new E63 AMG sedan will go on sale in the UK in September. It is also expected that the public will get first live glimpse at the 2009 New York International Auto Show next week.

[Editor's Note] Press release first mentions 6.3-liter V8 engine and then later states 6208 cc. To comply with German law, Mercedes-Benz is required to round up the displacement figure to 6.3 when used for marketing purposes.

The E63 AMG – a new generation sports sedan delivering top driving dynamics

With 518 hp and AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission

AMG is kicking-off the 2009 driving season with a new superstar: shortly after the launch of the new E-Class, the AMG high-performance brand of Mercedes-Benz Cars presents the new 2010 E63 AMG. This dynamic sports sedan impresses with outstanding performance, thrilling handling characteristics and advanced technology transferred from its sibling, the SL63 AMG high-performance Roadster. The E63 AMG makes its U.S. sales debut in November 2009.

The new E63 AMG distinguishes itself from the standard Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedans with a newly developed AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension with electronically controlled damping, revised front suspension and unique exterior and interior design. At the same time, Mercedes-AMG has achieved a significant reduction in fuel consumption of almost twelve percent for the new E63 AMG, thanks to the precise application of several fuel efficiency improvements. With its unique combination of pioneering driver assistance systems, the E63 AMG further consolidates the brand's leading position in the field of automotive safety.

The AMG 6.3-liter V8-engine in the new E63 AMG develops an output of 518 hp and a 465 lb-ft of torque, matching the outstanding figures for the SL63 AMG. The high-performance Roadster has also transferred its AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission to the new model. This transmission replaces the conventional torque converter through the use of a multi-disc wet start-up clutch. In conjunction with the four individual driving modes, rev-matched shifts and RACE START function, the resulting, direct connection to the powertrain delivers an extremely emotional and high-performance driving experience.

The AMG MCT drive unit is unique in this segment, and provides dramatic performance figures: the E63 AMG accelerates from standstill to 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds, with a top speed of 155 mph (electronically limited). The fast-revving, naturally aspirated engine with a displacement of 6208 cc impresses with its agile responsiveness, muscular power delivery and high redline. The AMG V8 sound is a thrilling partner for mile after mile, while the smooth-running engine guarantees renowned Mercedes long-distance comfort. A newly designed water cooling system ensures maximum endurance even under the enormous dynamic stresses of the racetrack.

Fuel consumption cut by almost twelve percent

Despite 11 hp of additional output versus the preceding model, the E63 AMG showcases several advancements designed to improve fuel efficiency, including on-demand delivery of fuel and alternator management with recuperation of engine power during overrun. In-engine friction is also reduced by the AMG-exclusive twin-wire arc spray coating process used to coat cylinder walls.

The AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission also makes a decisive contribution to fuel economy: a multi-disc wet clutch running in an oil bath replaces the previous torque converter. This unit responds extremely rapidly, directly and without the losses typical of a torque converter transmission thanks to its low rotational inertia. The transmission is equipped with four driving modes: "C" (Controlled Efficiency), "S" (Sport), "S+" (Sport plus) and "M" (Manual), which can be selected using a rotary electronic switch in the AMG DRIVE UNIT. Partial suppression of individual cylinders by interrupting ignition and injection during gearshifts under full load contributes to considerably faster shift times. In M mode the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission allows gearshifts to be performed in 100 milliseconds.

In the even more fuel-efficient driving mode Controlled Efficiency, the transmission shifts the gears with deliberate smoothness, and the transmission control unit is programmed to perform early upshifts to keep engine speeds as low as possible. At the same time, the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission met the most demanding requirements where driving dynamics are concerned: fast and precise multiple downshifts ensure first-class agility in conjunction with the automatic rev-matching and RACE START function: this enables the E63 AMG driver to call on the maximum acceleration potential automatically.

Electronically controlled damping system and a new front axle

Sporty or more comfort-oriented? The driver of the new Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG is not obliged to accept any compromises in this respect. The AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension copes equally well with the dynamic cornering of the racetrack and more comfortable, sedate driving. High performance and typical Mercedes long-distance comfort go together as an extraordinary synthesis in the E63 AMG. This is made possible by the newly developed AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension. While new steel spring struts are used on the front axle, the rear suspension features AMG-specific air springs. The advantage of this solution, which is exclusive to AMG, is that the front spring struts ensure more sensitive responses while the rear air struts with their automatic level control system keep the vehicle at a constant height, irrespective of the load.

A new, electronically controlled damping system automatically varies the damping characteristics according to the driving situation, reducing the roll angle of the body. The result is instant adjustment to provide the best possible ride comfort together with the greatest possible agility. In addition, the driver is able to choose between the three suspension modes of Comfort, Sport and Sport plus at the touch of a button. The E63 AMG is also equipped with a newly developed, unique front axle with a 2.2 inch (56 millimeter) wider track, a tubular stabilizer bar, new control arms, new wheel bearings, newly-designed bushing geometry and kinematics and new wheel location for more negative camber – thereby providing more grip when taking turns at speed. The AMG-specific kinematics also ensures significantly more precision. This is a highly sophisticated axle design whose principle has already proved its worth in the C63 AMG. The rear axle likewise has more negative camber, optimized elastokinematics and a new subframe mounting for greater stability at the physical limits.

Newly developed power steering and individual 3-stage ESP®

For more direct responsiveness, the speed-sensitive rack-and-pinion steering is also a new development. The steering ratio of 14 : 1 is 22 percent more direct (quicker) than in the standard production models, while a more rigid steering column plus the reconfigured characteristic mapping of the speed-sensitive servo assistance ensure better steering precision and improved road contact.

The 3-stage ESP® familiar from the SL63 AMG and C63 AMG enables individual settings to be selected – with clear benefits in terms of driving pleasure combined with the same high level of handling safety. The ESP® key in the AMG DRIVE UNIT allows the driver to choose between "ESP ON", "ESP SPORT" and "ESP OFF" – with the currently active mode shown in the central display of the AMG instrument cluster. Perfect deceleration even during performance driving is ensured by the AMG high-performance braking system with 14.2 inch, internally ventilated and perforated brake discs all-round. Particularly resistant, motorsports-tested compound (two-piece) construction technology is used at the front axle. Outstanding grip is ensured by the 18-inch AMG light-alloy wheels with a width of 9 and 9.5 inches and mixed tire sizes of 255/40 R 18 at the front and 285/35 R 18 at the rear.

Decidedly dynamic interior and exterior

The purposefully dynamic design of the E63 AMG is fully in keeping with the vehicle's impressive technology. The front aspect is characterized by 17-millimeter wider fenders bearing "6.3 AMG" lettering, the new AMG front apron with large intake air apertures and the AMG-specific daytime driving lights in LED technology. In conjunction with the optional Bi-Xenon Headlamps with Active Curve Illumination, the E63 AMG is equipped with tinted main headlamps.

The striking visual presence is further enhanced by the AMG side skirts and AMG rear apron with a black diffuser insert. As a hallmark of the brand, the AMG sports exhaust system has two newly designed, chrome-plated twin tailpipes.

The new interior of the E63 AMG is an exciting blend of high-grade materials and functional sportiness. Exclusive features include electrically adjustable AMG sports seats with improved lateral support and the AMG sports steering wheel in a four-spoke design with AMG shift paddles. As a completely new feature exclusive to the E63 AMG, the AMG selector lever has one-touch logic. Directly adjacent to it in the center console is the AMG DRIVE UNIT, which provides adjustments for the MCT sports transmission, the ESP functions, the suspension setup and the AMG driving modes. Standard equipment also includes high-grade leather upholstery in three different colors, the AMG instrument cluster with an AMG main menu, door entry sills with AMG lettering and a sports pedal cluster – both in brushed stainless steel.

Even more individuality with tailor-made AMG extras

  • Customers can select the optional AMG Performance Package, which includes the following:
  • Lightweight, forged 19-inch AMG light-alloy wheels with size 255/35 R 19 tires at the front and 285/30 R 19 at the rear
  • AMG Performance suspension with stiffer spring rates
  • AMG rear axle locking differential with 40 percent locking action
  • AMG Performance steering wheel in a three-spoke design
  • Top speed raised to 186 mph

Active and passive safety at a new level

The E63 AMG traditionally meets the very highest expectations with respect to active and passive safety. Standard features include the new drowsiness detection system ATTENTION ASSIST, the unique preventive occupant protection system PRE-SAFE®, Brake Assist PLUS, eleven airbags and crash-responsive NECK-PRO head restraints. Optional safety features can bring the vehicle to a level unprecedented in this class with Lane Keeping Assist and Blind Spot Assist systems, the PRE-SAFE® Brake with an automatic emergency braking function, Adaptive High Beam Assist and Night View Assist PLUS.

I beg to differ, fast fast fast. The E63 has low weight, which means it has the same power to weight ratio as the RS6. This car will handle well too because of its low weight.

Now we're talking... Standard Mercs don't have any appeal anymore...only the AMG versions or Sport packs with "AMG" body kits look any decent. MB must know this fact and are probably having alot of fun selling the extra cost "AMG" body kits. In my home market the C Class comes standard with the AMG appearance pack (except the wheels...the Elegance trim has 16 inch wheels with an "AMG" body kit...how retarded is that?) Atleast the real AMG cars have a different body kit now. The old W203 AMG cars really suffered because there was little difference in appearance between a normal C Class with the sports pack and a real AMG car expect the badges, brakes, and exhausts.

this car is entirely just to sexy. I love te fog lights on it, or DRLs (which i think is a stupid idea for us Americans) because the ones on the normal E class look silly, Id rather have these or the double oval ones, the "L" shaped ones are stupid. Dnt get me wrng, i like the normal E class, but this car is stupid sexy. omg, and the gear shift is in the correct place? win.

horsepower gives you top speed , torque gives you acceleration. Top speed is limited to 250 km/h , much of the hp is wasted , i'll take more Torque over horsepower , especially on a heavy car like this

Joe_Limon
April 1, 2009 6:15 PM
Gear ratios give you everything, a car with 200hp and 100ft/lbs of torque will accelerate just as fast as a car with 200hp and 250ft/lbs of torque. If you have them both hit their respective redlines at the same speed that is. What is nice about lower torque engines is that you generally get a larger range of peak torque.

April 1, 2009 8:34 PM
To the OP's original statement, yes, the 6.2 litre engine is larger than the 5.0 litre engine in the M5, but I highly doubt AMG engineers have exploited the full potential of this engine. BMW probably haven't either, but it stands to reason that a 6.2 litre engine will deliver more power and torque than a 5.0 litre, even with the slight difference in cylinder count.

The reason as to why Mercedes AMG haven't gone all out is probably because they don't want too much power. Remember the mad dog that is the C63; which was massively fast, but had alot of trouble getting 450 bhp nailed to the floor!

Windtalker01
April 1, 2009 11:25 AM
Yes, C63 is faster in the strange line, but it also much slower than M3 if going round the corner. Beside, if you watch Topgear closely, C63 not only lost to M3 in the lap time and it is less controllable. So that mean all the engine power is wasted if the chassis is not good!!

At least it has LED DRLs, which are not found in any production BMW as of now. And 'does not look aggressive enough'? It's called a conservative design that appeals to a wider consumer range. Aggressive designs are what you have the CLS and SL for.

I think this car look great. Very aggressive at the front and the back i do think it is good looking enough. The E63 is suppose to be subtle, it should still has the elegant look to it. This is what Benz has been doing for the past years. We are not talking about japanese boy racer car here.

As for the engine, I think the power is quite enough. The M5 altho has a smaller engine with horsepower that is similar to this new 6.3 AMG unit. However in the BMW you have rev the nuts for that kind of power, which isn't very accessible. Benz has always thought of that, their engine altho bigger, however the power is more accessible, and the torque that it gives when you accelerate from the start and out of the corner, nothing else can give you that.

I do like the fact that they have the gear lever back at the center console for the AMG model. Nice job Benz

highly doubt it. this car is much lighter and should be faster to 60 and around a track. the rs6 is even slower to 60 than a c63 but faster at high speeds. audi have a tradition of bringing their rs cars at a much later wronger time.

michelin901
April 1, 2009 4:52 PM
go to drivers-republic.com and check out the comparison. i was talking abt the avant which is slower to 60. the c is much lighter and faster to 60 after which the rs6 is faster. the sedan may prbbly be on par with the c. try to understand the fact that the rs6 is the heaviest of the lot. were talking about twin turbos,AWD whereas this c63, the e63 and the m5 are N/A, RWD and easily my choices to choose from and will also 'eat' the rs6 on the track.

michelin901's correct on this one. The RS6 weighs around 2 tonnes, whereas the E63 and M5 weigh 200 kgs less. Thats a massive advantage for handling and acceleration. The RS6 is massively fast in a straight, but around a track it will struggle against the E63 and M5, due to their added nimbleness.

There's nothing wrong with it, I just don't find it as exciting and interesting as an M5... and it'll be interesting to see how this stacks up against the RS6 and new M5 -- Mercs aren't known for being light and nimble, and it doesn't appear to have the power to compensate. I would hazard a guess that AMG will be producing a higher-power version in a couple of years?

Tumbo that's a school playground lie. The RS6 has never ever been recorded to have done 0 - 100 in 4.1 seconds. For your information Cars in action tested the RS6 against the E63 AMG and the M5 last month in March. The test drivers failed to achieve the claimed 4.5 secs sprint (0 - 100m)by use of the conventional way of taking of. They however did dip the 4.5 sec only after having stepped on the brake peddle and reving the cobwebs of the car and then releasing the brake - old style. The other two rivals achieved times of 4.6 to 4.8. The RS6 unfortunately could only run that quick only once and after one good run the engine started to overheat and gave times as follows 2nd run: 4.6, 3rd run:4.9 secs, 4th run 5.5, 5th run: hello there this car touched 5.9secs. The other two were on the spot 4.6 to 4.8 secs - now that's what i call good engineering. Their average times of course are better for the other two than for the one punch wonder new kid on the block. This goes to show that the RS6 can get smoked by the RS4 if the drivers were consistently racing from traffic to traffic. YOur 4.1 sec is a foolish lie. Try another.

They don't offer a manual because no one who buys Mercedes-Benz vehicles would buy it. If you are looking for a track car you are not going to buy the E63. The E63 is the ultimate street machine. It is really fast, handles great on the street, and is really comfortable. The best of everything.

This is a sexy car, a particular Audi fan keeps reminding me that the when the RS6 was tested against the M5 and the previous E63, it was a true whitewash. I'm going to enjoy rubbing all I've read in his face...

With that covered I think this is a job well done by AMG, it definitely looks the business.

The CTS-V is also a pretty sweet deal, while it's a little down on the RS6 in power, it has substantially more torque and apparently does 0-60 mph in 3.9 secs, and it must have pretty fair handling because of it's Nurburgring run. Maybe there's something I'm missing but it seems to have all 3 germans "schooled"?

Jaguar's XFR is a a million times more sexy than this barge.

The Jag is technologically more advanced aswell, the Merc is 6.2L and only has 518hp, XFR & M5 produce nearly the same Bhp at 5.0L, No Direct Injection and No Electronic Differential, the XFR and the rest of the competition already have this Merc sorted, before it's even released aswell.

The interior looks way to generic, and the side and rear profiles are from ten years ago!

It is true that the 6.2 litre engine in the E63 has a lower BHP per unit displacement, but the engineers at AMG clearly haven't fully exploited this engine. You must remember, too, that the Jaguar 5.0 litre engine has a supercharger, whereas the 6.2 litre Mercedes-AMG engine is naturally aspirated. That supercharger, as you know, is a good substitute for a larger displacement. The only engine that truly achives 100 bhp/litre displaced is the BMW V10 engine. But, where as the V8's in both the E63 and XFR can achive 630 NM or torque, the BMW only has 520 NM. Thats a large difference as you'll appreciate. Overall, the cars have their advantages. Its unfair to isolate one part of the specification, and exclude other factors. Weight, power output, torque and other important factors all play a part in the performance of the car.

I'd would like to see a test of these three pitted against each other; it would certainly be an interesting match.

if the first AMG super cars hadn't been 6.3 litres, i doubt they would have ever brought back the 6.3 and put it in today's AMGs (yeah i know it's really a 6.2). It's all marketing.

Guys every one knows... No matter what you cant beat a benz, there the rolex watch of cars. m5 and the five series in general are now soo boreing. I like bmw but i cant personaly picture me owning one just simply because it will always be in the back of my head " i could of bought a benz" they could have boosted horse power up a bit more but they just released a statement not to long ago " The horse power war is over" Audi guys and bmw guys will hate me for this comment. But audi fans and beemer fans will feel the same way about there favorite brands. Imo this car is beutiful does close to 200 if not does 200 mph. Obviously not the most exotic amg (compared to cl63) it does the job beating last years e class amg .

Merecedes Benz are no longer the Rolex watch of cars my friend, maybe they were 15 years ago, but not these days. The likes of Jaguar, Aston Martin & Maserati are the exotic choices, for today's high flying entrepreneurs.

Over here in Europe, Mercedes just remind me of taxis, vans, lorries and third world dictators barges!!!

thats sad, I dnt knw about the rest fo the world, but here in America a Mercedes still turns heads, and gets people talking, and is a sign that, the driver is someone of some importance of some kind.

Mercedes lost their way in Europe, when there quality started slipping, some of the styling is still years behind the rest. Park this E-class next to an XFR and the Jag is so much more contemporary in comparison to this square shaped Merc! Americans seem to buy car based purely on the badge, but Europeans just go for the best car.

I would like to know what makes you think that the styling of a benz is 10 years behind the rest. If anyhone is 10 years behind it is probably jaguar and that would be in design as well as technology. Jaguar has only been recycling their old design and puting nasty plastic bodykits on it to make it look newer for the big executive saloons. As for the coupe and the very favourite xfr of yours i think those designs look very cheap. And with engines handling and technology jaguar just doesnt stand a chance againts the germans. I think that is quite clear

I don't know why peoples blame at the way benz design goes. Squared design is expression of hypermodernity. How you morons do know about teutonism?

Well, don’t expect too much in what you see, In fact, don’t expect anything at all. Mine is a 2006 E280 GAS. Bought it because of its physical appearance. Read some bad reviews but didn’t believe much. But, whats terrible is this car is far worst than I've expected. The lots of problems one can think of came ‘STANDARD’. 2 months after purchasing this car, I went to see and test driven a BMW 530; an AUDI A6; and a Lexus GS 350, That was the time I came to realize what a better car should feel like. With the same 3L engine, the power; response and handling of the 530 was way beyond my E280. Doesn’t even come close at all. The 3.2L A6 came very very close, and the GS350 was so accurate and quiet, the interior and sound system was stunning. After test driving these cars, the feeling I had was I’ve absolutely nothing to be proud of. And the saddest part is the E280 was the most expensive one compared to the rest of the cars I’ve mentioned above in our region. I was really stupid and have made the wrong choice. And, driving it for only after a few months made me feel like driving a very old car. Everything in this car seems outdated and everything is inaccurate and slow. There are too many problems with this E280 and I've actually asked about 10 owners of the same model and 7 of them has if not all, many of the same trouble that I have with this car. I've absolutely nothing against this company. Believe me or not, I don’t care. But if you do, take this as an advice. You'll probably thank me afterwards, for making the right decision. So, If you are planning to purchase an E. Go see for yourself first and test drive a BMW 530; an A6 or a GS350. Start with the response; handling; and cabin noise. You will feel the difference and understand what I'm saying. Its really not worth buying a car just for the name and the mark. And for your information, the 5 series do turn more heads than the E’s according to a survey made by myself and my friends. Goodluck !

that's what you get for buying a car for what it looks like not for its engineering...and stop whining you only bought a 280...buy a real benz

benzomatiq - the dated styling i'm refering to is the rear and side profiles of this e-class, the rear looks like something which you would expect of a car costing about $20k, the side profile has all the sleekness of a Lada Samara, take a look at the e-class over it's entire history, and it's always been butt ugly. Jaguars new 5.0 V8 is the most advanced V8 in the world to date btw, the XFR & XKR can out handle the M5 & M6 on any real road, the E63 & SL63 are no where to be seen. Mercedes are still not using Direct Injection or E-Diffs, where as Jaguar, Audi & Bmw are using them already :D

I find it highly unlikely that Jaguar, a company who's finances are woefully out of place and have very limited budgets consequently, can develop the worlds "most advanced" V8 engine. It would be interesting to know which part of the engine define the its "advancement"?

To your other point regarding styling. I absolutely agree that the styling of the E class has been poor in comparision to the 5 series. However, remmeber the XF has only just replaced the hideous looking S type from Jaguar. This E class and even the previous E class looked a hell of a lot better than that boat. The fact is, the E class hasn't done very well in this part of the car market, but that is evidently going to change. Take a look at the markets where Mercedes has done well, with cars such as the CLS, SL, C and S class. These are Mercedes' "backbone" cars. For example, the CLS was so very popular that other manufacturers are racing to exploit the market which Mercedes took advantage off, and still, I see no worthy contender to. There are some interesting designs out there, however.

This new car looks much more modern, more aggresive and more in line with the dynamics of this particular segment. It has to be, if it has any chance of changing its perception, which it clearly has already.

looks right from the front but everywhere else it does not look as muscle as the previous E63. I'll buy it just for the engine eventhough its 6,203cc to the M5's 5 liter V10, its lighter.

Jaguar's XFR is faster than all of the competition, Car And Driver got a 0-60 time of 4.3s in the XFR, take a look the review, http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/hot_lists/high_performance/furious_four_doors/2010_jaguar_xfr_short_take_road_test

If any buys the XFR because of its 0.2 second advantage to the E63, in its 0-62 time, they are quite foolish. One aspect of the specification certainly does not define the car.

The XFR doesn't have the appeal of any of the German brands. The Germans do quality, speed and luxury in one. The Jaguar, which is a very nice car if you ask me, has still been built a very strict budget, due to Jaguar's financial woes. It is definately not as qualitative as an E63, M5 or RS6.

That isn't faster than the much intentionally-ignored CTS-V.

Zero - you are talking rubbish, Jaguar's XF has been reviewed by nearly every car magazine, and they all say that the XF can match and surpass the German motors for quality, the 5 series has one of the worst luxury interiors i've ever sat in, the wood and leather in the E-class is cheap and nasty, only the Audi A6 can match the XF for quality materials, but the Jag's interior is years ahead in style and panache...

Zero
April 15, 2009 2:01 AM
Jaguar's interior have certainly not been quality, due the use of old Ford switch gear and the like. Jaguar has been hamstrung for cash for some time now, and any new development from them is interesting, but almost always not able to compete with the Germans.

But, I do agree that the XF marks a different direction with Jaguar, but ubercool, watch the rate of sales of German cars in the next year or so, and you will see, not many people want to put their hard earned money into a company which has a new owner every month.

...shiny G you don't know what you are talking about...the AMG V8 " has bigger muscles" if you want to think of it that way...It's ok if you are a BMW fanatic but you're crazy if you think BMW has a better engine than the AMGs...only now with the advent of twin-turbos have BMW engines started producing good torque numbers...
