The Golf R32 is dead, long live the Golf R20.

The new Golf R20 is making some quick laps at the Nürburgring racetrack disguised as a 2.0 TDI. But they can't fool us, not with those two big central mounted exhaust pipes. While the R32 had a six cylinder engine with 250 horsepower, the new R20 will have a version of the 2.0 liter turbocharged engine with direct injection which will be tuned to produce 270 horsepower. That should be enough to let the R20 accelerate up to 100 km/h in the low five seconds range.

To stop the car is as important as power, and this prototype has the same brakes as the Audi S3 which will be enough for this power rabbit. Both 3- and 5-door versions will be available but we expect the 3-door version to come first.

Expect a more aggressive front bumper when the R20 will have its debut, rumors says it will be in May at the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring.

Is this a separate model to the speculated GTI-R?

Producing more power from less cylinders .. VW/Audi are clearly leaders at this ...I expect this R20 will be another bahn-stormer both on the road and speeding out of the showroom doors.

I remember several good ol' japanese cars, which did high power from less cylinder figures pretty much earlier.

Those old banshee Jappers had about as much torque as a child's spinning top. So it wasn't so easy to access the power in the real world.

Kinda biased, are we ? You're only referring to Honda with this and if you know how to drive a high-revving engine, you can easily access this power instantly. But that's nothing for lazy automatic drivers ;) Here's just ONE of MANY examples, which comes easily into my mind: Nissan Silvia S15 SR20DET engine 250 PS from 2.0l with ENOUGH Torque.

It should be the Scirocco to inaugurate the R20 line...

The Golf will create many more sales (across the range) with such an image boosting model than the Scirocco ever could.

2.0 liter diesel pumping up 270hp? I doubt about it, sorry to say, WCF

Read it again my friend, its only disguised as a diesel. If only it was diesel...imagine the torque she'd be putting out...

trailer: it will be the 2.0l of the S3 or TT-S, and not a diesel engine

Will be an amazing little car, especially if they keep the 4-Motion. Hope they bring this one to Canada this time.

I agree. We need the 4Motion in Canada. This is one great little package.

What's the problem with the 3.2 V6? In an audi a5 it can do 8.6 litres / 100 km and that car weighs 1.710 kg

The 3.2 in the A5, A4, and A6, is a 90 degree V6. The 3.2 VR6 in the R32 is 15 degrees. The two engines are in no way related.

The one in the Audi is also a 30 valve instead of 24 if im not mistaken. Nothing wrong with the old 3.2 VR6 engine in the old R32, EIP tuning got like 680awhp out of the R32, doubt the 2.0L has the same potential.

This NEED to be the R25 (2.5L) with a turbocharger! Unless the people at VW are planing to make an "R" version of the Scirocco with the suggested powerplant set up at the beginning of this statement.

What an absolute let down. The rear looks just like the outgoing R32 with minor minor minor changes. I really hoped the rear would look like the artist render that came out in Feb. And thos wheels look like 17's. arrggh.

wiking, AF1R, read the flamin' article. Its just a R20 test mule, using a TDI body. The R20 won't look like this, it'll still be understated, but it'll look more pumped up than this.

@genie, I was talking about the rear bodykit, sorry if i didnt make it clear. The rear skirt is the only thing that screams out R32 because of the tailpipes. If look closely at the picture and look at the rear skirt, it is different to the current R32, the 2 "red stips" are different. Did the R32 ever get a facelift? Im using the 2006 as a reference model.

I wish they put this engine in the Scirocco and mate it with 4Motion.

Low 5 secs? Why then is the Ford RS achieving only 5.9 secs with 300HP and a finely tuned from suspension to handle that power and torque (400nm +)... beats me. I reckon 5.6-6 secs is more reasonable from the R20. Nice motor, shame the Golf 6 looks like poo from my perspective.

If VW want to put a 5 cylinder in it why not the 3.0 TFSi from audi, it has about the same power. By the way it sounds sick in an audi s5
