Tesla Model S Revealed to Media
Tesla Model S sedan

Tesla is aiming to steal the limelight from much bigger companies by confirming it will bring into production this electric-drive Tesla Model S in the third quarter of 2011. The 196-inch (4.98m) Model S is the more practical vehicle from Tesla who also build the Tesla Roadster sports car.

Powering the car is a battery pack made up of 8,000 cells. This gives a range of about 300 miles (483km). Batteries are housed on the floor which frees up plenty of space in other places. For example the space under the traditional bonnet is used for storage. It's a big car which can accommodate five adults plus two children in rear-facing seats under the hatch.

Lightweight is the way to go and Tesla has made sure the Model S keeps its weight down to 3,825lbs (1735kg) by using mostly aluminium in its body construction. It achieves a drag coefficient of about .27 which is lower than the Roadster's .35. A single-speed transaxle is used to drive the liquid-cooled 9-inch motor so fewer parts are fitted.

Tesla does not seem to have traded performance for practicality on this car. The 0 - 60mph sprint is covered in 5.6 seconds, the quarter mile in 14 seconds and top speed is 120mph (193km/h). It will brake from 60 - 0mph within 135 feet. There is a Sport version planned which will dip under 5 seconds in the 0 - 60mph dash.

A warranty of 3 to 4 years for the car and 7 to 10 years for the battery pack is expected to be offered. Good news for countries like South Africa, Japan, Australia and the UK is that the Model S will also be sold in right-hand-drive. Indicative pricing is US$49,900.

Tesla Unveils World's First Mass-Produced, Highway-Capable EV

Model S Sedan Has Anticipated Base Price of $49,900, up to 300-Mile Range and 45-Minute QuickCharge Capability

HAWTHORNE, Calif.--Tesla Motors is now taking orders for the Model S, an all electric family sedan that carries seven people and travels 300 miles per charge.

The Model S, which carries its charger onboard, can be recharged from any 120V, 240V or 480V outlet, with the latter taking only 45 minutes. By recharging their car while they stop for a meal, drivers can go from LA to New York in approximately the same time as a gasoline car. Moreover, the floor-mounted battery pack is designed to be changed out in less time than it takes to fill a gas tank, allowing for the possibility of battery-pack swap stations.

The floor-mounted powertrain also results in unparalleled cargo room and versatility, as the volume under the front hood becomes a second trunk. Combining that with a four-bar linkage hatchback rear trunk and flat folding rear seats, the Model S can accommodate a 50-inch television, mountain bike *and* surfboard simultaneously. This packaging efficiency gives the Model S more trunk space than any other sedan on the market and more than most SUVs.

"Model S doesn't compromise on performance, efficiency or utility -- it's truly the only car you need," said Tesla CEO, Chairman and Product Architect Elon Musk. "Tesla is relentlessly driving down the cost of electric vehicle technology, and this is just the first of many mainstream cars we're developing."

Tesla expects to start Model S production in late 2011. The company believes it is close to receiving $350 million in federal loans to build the Model S assembly plant in California from the Dept of Energy's Advanced Technology Vehicle Manufacturing Program.

Building on Proven Technology

Tesla is the only production automaker already selling highway-capable EVs in North America or Europe. With 0-60 mph in 3.9 seconds, the Roadster outperforms almost all sports cars in its class yet is six times as energy efficient as gas guzzlers and delivers 244 miles per charge. Tesla has delivered nearly 300 Roadsters, and nearly 1,000 more customers are on the wait list.

Teslas do not require routine oil changes, and they have far fewer moving (and breakable) parts than internal combustion engine vehicles. They qualify for federal and state tax credits, rebates, sales tax exemptions, free parking, commuter-lane passes and other perks. Model S costs roughly $5 to drive 230 miles - a bargain even if gasoline were $1 per gallon.

The anticipated base price of the Model S is $49,900 after a federal tax credit of $7,500. The company has not released options pricing. Three battery pack choices will offer a range of 160, 230 or 300 miles per charge.

"Model S costs half as much as a Roadster, and it's a better value than much cheaper cars," Musk said. "The ownership cost of Model S, if you were to lease and then account for the much lower cost of electricity vs. gasoline at a likely future cost of $4 per gallon, is similar to a gasoline car with a sticker price of about $35,000. I'm positive this car will be the preferred choice of savvy consumers."

The standard Model S does 0-60 mph in under six seconds and will have an electronically limited top speed of 130 mph, with sport versions expected to achieve 0-60 mph acceleration well below five seconds. A single-speed gearbox delivers effortless acceleration and responsive handling. A 17-inch touchscreen with in-car 3G connectivity allows passengers to listen to Pandora Radio or consult Google Maps, or check their state of charge remotely from their iPhone or laptop.

Tesla is taking reservations online and at showrooms in California. Tesla will open a store in Chicago this spring and plans to open stores in London, New York, Miami, Seattle, Washington DC and Munich later this year.

About Tesla Motors

San Carlos, Calif.-based Tesla Motors Inc. designs and manufactures electric vehicles with exceptional design, performance and efficiency, while conforming to all North American and European safety, environmental and durability standards. The Roadster, which has a 0-to-60 mph acceleration of 3.9 seconds and a base price of $101,500 after a federal tax credit, is the only highway-capable production EV for sale in North America and Europe. Tesla expects to begin producing the Model S sedan in late 2011.

yeah, maybe not that original, but still soooo good-looking. wake up europe, the future is here, it looks beautiful and it comes from USA (chevy volt, fisker, tesla....).

On any level this is a good looking car. Part Maserati QP, part Jaguar XF and thoroughly modern. That it has come from such a small company is a real achievement. I just hope it lives up to its promises AND gets to market before the money runs out for Tesla.

Part Aston Martin, part Porsche panamera, the back end is copied from the Jaguar XF, and there are some elements of the Lexus GS300. But it doesnt look half bad.

It does look better than expected, I agree. However "move over Quattroporte" is a highly inappropriate summary for it. The foundation has now been laid. Thats good but the Tesla S still does not manage my weekly drive between Geneva an Zurich (620 km) without a recharge. Charging time and range remain issues to be addressed.

WOW!!! tomorrow is now. say good bye petrol cars. their time is finally to be over. i want one of these. truely amazing, Tesla has its first model hardly on the market and already showing off their next hot item - and what an item it is - beautiful. i can't believe GM and all others can't come up with something like this? although GM has something simallar now, but why did they need so long? Mr. Martin Eberhardt, founder and father of Tesla, is the Henry Ford of the future, i deeply hope he is still involved in this pioneery company. Also congradulations to the Tesla design department - nice job. -

I agree with all the positive comments here... In addition, I see a touch of Citroen design in the car, nevertheless, this is still far from a perfect car if it carries flaws from its sister roadster. I guess you can never have a perfect vehicle. A true testament for companies with likes of Fisker and Tesla is whether they get returning customers as these cars maybe sold purely on the basis of novelty, be it price, design or environment.

I want this car! I watched several videos of the Roadster that Tesla already has out and I was really impressed. I like the fact that Electric Vehicles are near silent, good for sneaking up on people or driving through populated areas late at night! I also like that all of the torque is available from '0' RPM. I have to be honest and say that I admire Tesla Motor Cars inventiveness and creativity. Chrysler, Ford, GM, etc. have had Billions of dollars to play with to develop cars and only GM has managed so far to come up with the VOLT. Seriously, if Tesla can be this inventive and daring (who knows will these things sell in volume), then what are the other guys doing? Sitting on their hands? I agree range without charging is a problem, but hey technology will get better if people start working on it, and anyway my car doesn't go forever if I forget to fill up with Gas!

300 miles on a charge is pretty good, and succificient for the vast majority... if you really want to go far europe has a pretty good train network. I dont know why america persists in propping up failing companies like GM and Chrysler... ultimately Tesla is a far better investment opportunity, if they get big then the american car workers can work for them.

The screen in the middle of the dashboard is huge! Anyway, I still like the Fisker sedan more, yet this one is not bad at all, however less original, I see a little of a Citroen/Jag/Maseratti combination here.

When chinese or corean automaker make a car that looks like some european model everybody feels hurt but when a green american automaker make it's car in this way everybody enjoys it. I think those points of view are quite stupid even if that car still looks good, for me this is more a copy than an original good looking new car.

Dude this car is brilliant, some people worked hard on it, and it delivers very good performance and looks so if u hate american cars that's ur problems.

I could interpretate some design aspects of different brands like the back of Jaguar etc. But I want only to agree with many others: glad to see such a nice conception planned for the nearest future. The time of tomorrow!

I really hate all of that pseudo environmental-friendly stuff like electric cars... But what a design of this car! Gorgeus! What a shame that it won't have four or five liter turbocharged monster under the bonnet... With electric motor acceleration to 60 mph looks nice but maximum speed (120 mph :-) is a riot...

Tell me, for real, where would you drive this car faster than 130mph? Other than the Autobahn, of course. BTW there's an error in the article. The top speed is 130mph according to the press release.

So, if I have no-speed-limits autobahns in Germany why I cannot use of it? Because my car is Tesla with f...g electric motor and doesn't go faster than 200 kmh despite the fact that it looks like it would go 300? And any MB's, BMW's and even some Kia's outstripping me in my electric "supercar"? Pitiful.

Ok, it won't have to much success among the german boy races, but it will just about anywhere else.

Guys I respect your opinion but I would never buy that kind imitation of supercar. Cars - like people - should be fair: if something looks like fast car it should be fast. But if something have an electric motor and hardly exceed 100 mph it should looks like Prius. Or shopping trolley. ;-)
March 27, 2009 2:05 pm
 tsiebrand tsiebrand
@Hexatron: even if the car was faster you would hardly be able to go that speed. There is simply too much traffic on our Autobahns, trust me. To me the car doesn?t look like a car that would go 300 as you say and to be honest, I don?t see your problem with electric cars having a nice design. The Quattroporte doesn?t go 300 either! Who cares! It?s just beautiful!

I see that nobody will miss after cars with powerful, beautifully sounding, combustion engines... except me. :-( I hope I'm wrongo.
March 28, 2009 6:49 am
 Andres2007 Andres2007
Of course we'll miss them, but we just have to get over the fact that they'll become outdated. Plus, who said that in the future electric cars will be this slow? As far as I recall the first combustion engine vehicle didn't reach the 260 miles that the SSC Aero achieves now.... As far as the design goes, I completely disagree with you. That technological limitations impair the car's max speed doesn't mean it has to look like a dumb car. Plus, recall that fast cars owe their fast-car-looking design to the fact that they have to be aerodynamic. Just because this car doesn't reach 150 mph doesn't mean its engineers have to forget about aerodynamics.

Woah this is amazing! Absolutely beautiful. Tesla has definitely hit the sweet spot with this one. I hope they get it to production soon, because this baby will SELL. And yeah, it's amazing how a small company such as Tesla can come up with something like this, while the big companies have nothing to offer that compares to this. I think this is going to be something big. Really big.
