Mercedes-Benz has sent out a few new videos featuring pre-pro testing of the new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Gullwing. Mercedes is hard at work on their pick to take over for the McLaren SLR.

This nearly 2-minute long video (thanks, Carscoop) seems to have been shot at about the same time as the photo shoot featuring the same vehicle. We showed you those photos just a few weeks ago. The video shows the car as it goes back and forth from design stages, testing stages, development, engineering, and refinement. By the end of the footage, we see the aluminum chassis vehicle racing through snow and ice down the Pikes Peak Highway in Colorado. Filming was also done in Laredo, Texas, and northern Sweden.

The 1620 kg car will get a 571 hp, 6.2-liter V8 engine that generates up to 650 Nm of torque. The driver will be capable of getting the car to 0-100km/h in under four seconds, and 200km/h in about 12, with the help of a seven-speed dual-clutch trans. The mid-front mounted engine is partly responsible for the impressive 48-52 weight distribution. Ceramic brakes will be installed to bring the car back to zero as quickly as possible. The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Gullwing should go on sale in early 2010 at about €140k.

this car looks deliberately very sports oriented, and therefore one could assume that it'll forego many of the luxuries one would come to expect from a Mercedes. if this was the direction that Merc is taking, why wasn't that the direction that was taken with the SLR in the first place? after all, most of the complaints stemmed from the fact that it wasn't hardcore enough (and personally, i despised it for being built in Britain and not coming in right-hand-drive.)

A sporty 599 GTB styled powertrain: a front-middle mounted 6.2L 8-cylinder engine (6.0L 12-cylinder for 599), a rear mounted gearbox (even a rear mounted double clutch forward of the differential on the SLS), 1620kg curb weight (1690kg for 599) by using a large portion of aluminium, less than 4sec 0-100km/h acceleration…… A new challenger to 599 GTB in practicality as well: 2-seater with a reasonable luggage compartment.

hmmm. I dunno it still looks heavy for the amount it tossed around in corners, it may be the first amg to break the 4000lb mark... but just barely, and far far away from supercar status.

1620Kg = 3571lbs , that's not barely 4000.

it's lighter and more powerful than the 997 Turbo, i think it's supercar enough.

sorry, missed the specs. But seriously, the 997 turbo is lighter then this car yet I would be very hard pushed to call it a "super car" it is still a sports car. But with 571hp, sure I will call this car a supercar.

Speaking of which, doesn't the viper have more power and weigh less then this car? What did merc do to make a smaller displacement car weigh more? Hopefully it's something to help the fuel economy! it will be a burn if a 8.3L viper can get better mileage then this car.

the Merc is heavier becaue of all the luxury equipment it has and the automatic gearbox. we will have to wait for the Black Edition to see a sport version of this.

i kind of curious what the end result will be, it sounds great, lets just hope they don't shelf this model or worse drop this car all together

Thats alot of testing done there, but the engine sounds like a muscle car not like AMG engines even though the logo is there, still something is missing. Anyways it still in testing mode, so I'll wait.
