Fresh spy shots of a facelifted Land Rover Range Rover have emerged. The current model of the big luxury SUV has been on the market for the past seven years. It had a mild facelift in 2006.

These new images reveal a bit more exterior detail than previous spy shots. They show a front bumper with new fog lights and newly-designed rear lights. The front end is getting LED daytime running lights while the rear lights also get LED technology. Changes to the interior will only be minor because this part of the car was recently upgraded with higher quality materials.

The Range Rover is expected to get a couple of new engines, one of which is already fitted to its Jaguar XF cousin. This particular engine is the AJ-V6D Gen III 3.0-litre V6 twin turbo diesel which is found in the new XF Diesel S. It produces 275PS (202kW) and maximum torque of 600Nm. Such a torque figure would be quite suited to a vehicle of this size. The AJ-V6D Gen III S Diesel replaces the 2.7-litre that was popular with Jaguar S Type buyers.

A brand new Range Rover is only expected to start selling in the year 2011 as a 2012 model year so this second facelift is more like a stop-gap to prolong the lifespan of the current car. Due to hightened environmental concern the next-generation Range Rover is getting downsized. It was recently announced that the production version of the LRX concept which was unveiled in Detroit 2008 will inherit the Range Rover name.

Next generation Range Rover coming in 2011/2012 will be "downsized"!! I am so glad I just took delivery of a new Full Size 2008 Range Rover HSE. I love the size, weight, height and dimensions. Not all of us want to drive a downsized, tin can Prius. Also, Range Rover pays for 45,000 miles of 'Carbon Footprints' for every vehicle. While the Range Rover is by no means economical, it is sold in relatively low numbers, so I really think Range Rover does not need to go Green! Those of us who buy a RR, want a RR.

Downsizing! What? Yes, certainly I agree with the need to be Green these days and I know that SUV's get a bad wrap in the press. But seriously, some cars are supposed to be big otherwise in the not to distant future we'll only be able to choose between a massive selection of tiny city cars! Why can't Range Rover just make a diesel/electric hybrid instead? Fuel efficient and still a proper Range Rover! Maybe they should quit altogether and sell toy cars instead? Downsizing! Are they mad! Secondly, dear Land Rover Ltd, please can we have the 3.0V6 Diesel in the Discovery too? Then in an imaginary world in which there is no recession and I actually have the money, I'll go out a buy one!

I thought they dropped the V6 Diesel from the RR when they added the V8 Diesel, no?

I imagine the 3.0D will make it into the RR Sport and Discovery before too long.

And also the RR has had LED tail lights from the start. These are modified though with the turn signals moved out from the circular lamps to a horizontal strip between the two by the look of it. This will do much to make the turn signals easier to see.

Wow, bad decision Tata. I had previously heard the new Range would be built on an aluminum space-fame (like the current XJ). Thats the type of environmental tech RR buyers are looking for. If you're spending 70-80K on an SUV, fuel prices are not high on the decision making ladder. No one wants a small Range Rover. Thats what Freelander's are for. This will be bad for LR. I didn't think Ford or Tata would have the engineering prowess to top BMW's Range Rover. And now, that's been proven correct. Such a bad decision...

The next all-new Range Rover will still be full size. The new smaller LRX that will wear the Range Rover LRX badge and will be the third Range Rover in Land Rover's lineup. So you will have the all-new full size top spec Range Rover (the icon), also the Range Rover Sport and then an all-new compact Range Rover LRX.

I hope you're right Mitch8. It would be a total shame, and a catastrophic move on Tata's part, if they forced Land Rover to make The Range Rover small, light and too green. I am all for improving gas mileage, using Bluetec Diesel engines, Hybrid motors, etc... But The Range Rover must stay full size, or Land Rover as a company is kind of pointless. I had a 2006 Sport Supercharged, and it was so NOT a Range Rover, and never should carry the badge. It was plasticky, cheap and totally unreliable. My new Full Size 2008 HSE is a proper Range Rover, and I love everything about it!!
