Audi finished the 12-hour endurance race only 22.279 seconds ahead of arch-rival Peugeot, having covered 1,417.10 miles (2267 km) in total

Audi has won the 12-hour endurance race at Sebring with its new R15 TDI race car.

The Audi Sport Team Joest's two Audi R15 TDI's, raced by drivers Dindo Capello of Italy, Tom Krisentsen of Denmark, and Scotsman Allan McNish won the race at the Sebring circuit in Florida with a record distance run, finishing 383 laps, 13 more than the previous best.

The win didn't come easy, with Audi competing fiercely with the two Peugeot 908 diesels, the lead changing more than a dozen times between them. Audi finished the 12-hour marathon race only 22.279 seconds ahead of Peugeot, having covered 1,417.10 miles (2267 km).

The heated competition between the two diesel racing cars likely now solidifies the status of diesels in endurance races. Audi Sport has reigned over the past couple of races at the 24-hour LeMans circuit with its previous R10 TDI. This June, Audi Sport Team Joest will race there with 3 R15 TDI's and is considered a favorite to win.

Allan McNish became the most successful British driver in one of America's oldest motor races when the "Flying Scotsman" earned his new diesel engined Audi a sensational and hard fought debut victory in the Sebring 12 Hour endurance sportscar race in Florida tonight (Sat 21 Mar).

McNish bagged his hat-trick of Sebring victories when the 39-year-old Dumfries-born ace, together with Dindo Capello (Italy) and Tom Kristensen (Denmark), steered their Audi R15 TDI to a narrow 22.279secs win after clocking up a record 1,417.10 miles at a record average speed of 117.986mph.

"Our brand new R15 TDI was faultless throughout the race and allowed Audi to secure another Sebring debut victory," said an ecstatic McNish.

"This must go down in the history books as one of the best Sebring 12 Hour races ever when you take in to account the competition, the intensity from start to finish making it a sprint race, with the final two hours especially typifying what Audi Sport is all about - grit and determination - the entire team can be proud in taking the laurels back to Ingolstadt in Germany.

"We arrived at Sebring with minimal testing under our belts which makes this result even sweeter."

The result earned the German manufacturer a perfect "warm-up" for its title defence of the Le Mans 24 Hours in June with its brand new V10 turbo diesel - a race won last year by the same trio of drivers in the Audi R10 TDI.

The Briton started the 57th running of the Floridian race from the front row, Kristensen having been denied pole-position by a scant 0.082secs, but McNish snatched the lead at the green light, handing the Audi over to Capello after 91mins.

McNish took over the Audi from Kristensen placed second on five hours and immediately swept into the lead on his very first lap back out on track but it was the Peugeot of Sebastien Bourdais/Franck Montagny/Stephane Sarrazin that led by 13secs at mid-distance as race honours hung in the balance in a battle of race strategies.

Kristensen, who has now won a record five Sebring races, had built up a 30secs lead when McNish took over for a final time just short of two hours to run with Allan maintaining a 24secs lead after his final scheduled pit-stop for a splash of diesel with 15mins to the chequered flag.

The second Audi Sport Team Joest entered R15 TDI driven by German trio Lucas Luhr, Mike Rockenfeller and Marco Werner - the latter only driving one stint due to bruised ribs - started from fourth place on the 26-car grid and finished third - two laps down on the winners.

Audi made its Sebring debut in 1999 and has now won nine times.

Race Result:

1 Capello/Kristensen/McNish (Audi R15 TDI). 383-laps, 12hr 00min.38.638secs (117.986mph average speed).

2 Sarrazin/Montagny/Bourdais (Peugeot 908), -22.279secs.

3 Luhr/Rockenfeller/Werner (Audi R15 TDI), -2 laps.

not so my friend, if anything theyre going to be come more popular. With this global credit crunch ongoing, motorsport teams will b looking 4 a more fuel efficient way of racing, thus introduction of diesel. wont b surprized to find formula 1 dabbling in a bit of diesel technology! Its gonna happen, When is the question...

it's endurance racing, diesels have a huge advantage here. F1 is sprint racing , it wont convert to diesel engines , it will become hybrid or even electric powered racing soon.

Not really,I wish it would be true, but WTCC racing is sprint too with only like 12-14 laps and Seat diesel is champion.F1 needs to be turned in H(hydrogen)1

LOL at renegade. Diesels are too heavy, hydrogen - complicated (in a car that is already complicated) and heavy. Dry weight of F1 cars is about 500kgs without the driver and the ballast..

Congratulations to Audi!! The R8, R10, and R15 series are the greatest endurance racers of all time. This proves what incredible dedication and large factory backing will do for a team's success. Once again, Audi dominates and leads the way with their incredible technology and pioneering spirit. Vorsprung durch Tecknik!

This is not only about Diesel MPG, it's all about regulations that DIFFERS! between the 2 fuels. For Diesel are allowed up to 5.5L turbo/supercharged, with restrictors of 53mm or 2x37.9mm, and 2.75bar. For turbo/supercharged gas engines only 4.0L, with restrictors of 46mm or 2x32.9mm, and 1.5bar. For N/A gas engines only 6.0L, with restrictors of 45.5mm or 2x32.5mm. As you can see, the gas engine has no chance...

you forgot to mention the 2009 regulations that restrict the power of diesel engines , diminishing it by 10%.

Both of them retired due to mechanical failures i think, but both teams are encouraged by the pace of the car, the cornering speed was faster than that of the diesel powered cars. Diesel cars have an advantage on the straights.

Lol F1 using diesel? You do know that f1 engines rev up to 20,000 rpms right?
March 22, 2009 5:46 pm
 Joe_Limon Joe_Limon
Hmm, true, 20,000rpm, but they only put just over 200ft-lbs of torque. I am positive that if you got some equivalently powered diesels that they would fair just as well.

i don't think diesels will ever make it to F1 , they would have to make another set of rules and regulations in addition to the already complicated and debated rules they have now. also they are obviously heading towards hybrid power in F1.

Not going to happen, the longer the race the further ahead the Diesels will get from the pack.

WTCC is limited to 2.0L Diesel cars have more torque and torque plays a major role as the mass of the vehicle is about 1100 kilograms.

It's obvious the diesels have an advantage. I think the rules need to catch up. It's not quite a level playing field. The diesels make way too much torque, which is less affected by an air restrictor than gas. How about a limit on torque as well as hp? Can they do that?

ever came across one's mind the fact at why diesel engines are always specified for military vehicle use ?
March 24, 2009 12:21 am
 scratchy996 scratchy996
cause they are better engines. lower consumption , more reliable, more torque, tougher, can work with lower quality fuel, easier to maintain and less likely to catch fire.
