The Estoque premiered at the Paris auto show last year and was scheduled for launch in 2011

Lamborghini has shelved plans for the Estoque, a four-door coupe concept the Italian luxury brand had unveiled at the Paris auto show last year.

"The timing and market conditions are just not right for an additional model line," Maurizio Reggiani, head of research and development at Lamborghini, told Autocar. The Estoque was still in the early stages of development, with limited resources having been put into it, which made it easier for Lamborghini to shelve the project.

It seems the collapse in auto sales has made even premium and luxury automakers scale back their ambitions. On Friday, BMW also cited a poor economy as the reason for canceling the Z4 M.

The Estoque concept was a four-door, four-seat luxury coupe/supercar with a mid-front engine and all-wheel drive that had been scheduled for launch in 2011. The supercar was to have come with a series of engines, including Lamborghini's current 5.2-liter V10 as well as a high-powered diesel version of unspecified specs.

But Lamborghini lovers will still have other (possibly) upcoming models to fawn over, such as the Superleggera (super lightweight) variant of the Gallardo LP560-4. And Reggiani has re-affirmed Lambo's commitment to the e-gear transmission, a 6-speed manual gearbox with an electro-mechanical gizmo to help smooth out the shifts, and promises a "really surprising" update to it. No DSG for this supercar-maker, which doesn't carry the same "sense of occasion and drama" that a manual gearbox does, Autocar quotes Reggiani in the story. How very Italian.

Good decision to shelve the car, it didn't have the usual Lambo wow look, and wouldn't look right with the rest of lineup anyway

i think Porsche pulled the plug, so this car will be no danger for the Panamera which is not as good looking as this car, 2 cars from the same group(VW-AUDI) compiting against each other can't be good.

Estoque was supposed to be a lot more expensive than the Panamera Turbo , competition wasn't the problem.

I was wondering when someone would make this remark. I think you are wrong. Just as Porsche is not going to axe the Gallardo or even the R8. They're not scared of th eopposition.

This is an ill considered comment. VW Group isn't afraid of competition and you can see that throughout the whole portfolio -- there is, in reality, many models that cross over into the same micro-markets. I think the issue is that they didn't want to sink development money into a model entering what is becoming a crowded market. I just can't believe there are enough customers for the many hordes of supersaloons that are out there are coming soon.

That is the dumbest thing i have heard...Scared of competition? I mean competition is irrelevant because even if they pick a Estoque over a Panamera guess what the money is going into the same pocket. Hell they would probably want people to buy more Estoques because there is probably a higher profit than in the Panamera.

Holly crap!! Please tell me that you're just kidding, not only is the Panamera the ugliest Porsche ever made, but easily one of the ugliest cars of all time. The Estoque is a brilliant looking Lambo.

I don't think the Panamera is a bad looking car. If fact, I like about 90% of what I see. I guess you can argue about the humpback on the rear end but overall, I think people are over exaggerating about that one small detail. It does follow it's lineage however. As for the Estoque, I found it to be a very unappealing blend of odd angles intersecting curves. It looks exactly like the 2002 dodge charger concept. Don't believe me see for yourself: http://www.acarshow.com/chgcpt.html

*Sigh* Gone are the days when someone could just have an idea and turn it into a production model. Gone are the days. That said, as much as I love Lambo, there's NO way I could accept a 4-door. A 2-door, front-engined GT like the F612 Scaglietti, maybe, but this is a hole burnt in their lineage. Just another random rant - why is the Murcielago SV not the VT? Because it fits that bill, doesn't it? There's still room for more craziness from that car - they can crack the 700bhp mark, lose the 4WD and ditch another 100kg, I'm sure of this! (rant ends)

I honestly believe that lamborghini should stick to making two-door space ships.

@ RobERob

indeed it's almost a look alike from the Dodge, But i like more the Lambo then the Porsche, and i'm a Porsche fan, i prefer the Porsche GT2 then any Lambo.

Good move...no need to jump on the bandwagon for those super-saloon/4 door coupe type vehicles. The CLS 63 is all we need in this world thank you... Panamera I'll have to reserve my judgement until I see it in the flesh...but my biased little brain likes it already

Regardless of design, we ALL know this thing would sell very easily, even at that premium price point. That being said, I think it's a smart move for Lambo to pull out and wait for the overall market to improve- no need to rush anything.
