Mazda will be busy at next month's New York Auto Show, and there will be exciting news for its enthusiast and commuter consumers alike. For the families with sporting hearts, updated versions of the CX-7 and CX-9 crossovers are scheduled to debut. And for folks like North American readers of Worldcarfans, the good news is the debut of the MAZDASPEED3 five-door.

We knew it was coming, after the introduction of the Mazda3 MPS at Geneva last month. The 2010 MAZDASPEED3 will feature a 2.3-liter direct-injection turbocharged engine under the hood and styling influenced by the "Nagare" series of concept vehicles. The MAZDASPEED3 has long been something of a popular sleeper, and the more expressive, less subtle looks should increase its fan base. On-sale date and pricing will likely be announced at the show; expect the MAZDASPEED3 to join the four- and five-door 2010 Mazda3s in the lineup later this year.

Mazda's crossovers are no slouches on the driving front either, and both are receiving significant upgrades for 2010. The large, three-row CX-9 receives interior and exterior styling changes, while the smaller CX-7 is restyled and offers a new engine option. The naturally-aspirated 2.5 liter 16-valve four-cylinder engine is available with a five-speed automatic transmission, and may help to improve the CX-7's fuel economy. The updated CX-7 was debuted at the Canadian International Auto Show, and this is its first U.S. appearance. We'll have specifics from the show floor when press days open.

The New York International Auto Show is open April 10-19, 2009.

Press Release (Click to expand)

Mazda North American Operations will unveil three new vehicles at the 2009 New York International Auto Show, including the heavily revised 2010 CX-9 and CX-7 crossover SUVs and the highly anticipated MAZDASPEED3 high-performance compact 5-door. Takashi Yamanouchi, representative director, president and CEO, Mazda Motor Corporation, is scheduled to address the media at a press conference at the Mazda booth.

A strong success - including winning the 2008 Motor Trend Sport Utility of the Year and 2008 North American Truck of the Year awards - the CX-9 is a seven-passenger, three-row crossover SUV with unique driving dynamics that are not found in its segment. For the 2010 model year, the CX-9 receives an exterior and interior facelift, added options and reinforced safety features, while further improving Zoom-Zoom driving characteristics.

The 2010 MAZDASPEED3 builds on the credentials of its predecessor, and remains one of the quickest and fastest front-wheel drive cars in the world. It blends five-door functionality with bolder, more aggressive styling and exhilarating performance to meet the needs of enthusiasts with active lifestyles. Carrying forward the MZR 2.3L direct injection turbo engine, the new MAZDASPEED3 mixes world-class performance with Nagare (flow)-inspired design cues on the exterior and interior of the car. The MAZDASPEED3 made its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show and is the third model in the 2010 MAZDA3 lineup, joining the MAZDA3 5-door and 4-door sedan.

The 2010 CX-7 receives an exterior and interior styling refresh as well as a host of safety, convenience and engineering refinements. Leading the way is a new engine option - an all-new naturally aspirated DOHC 16-valve 2.5 liter MZR four-cylinder, coupled to a five-speed automatic transmission. The familiar turbocharged 244-hp DOHC 16-valve MZR Direct Injection Spark Ignition (DISI) 2.3-liter four-cylinder will continued to be offered. The CX-7 made its world debut at the Canadian International Auto Show earlier this year.

The balance of Mazda's full lineup also will be on display at the show, including MAZDA6, MAZDA5, RX-8, and the all-new 2010 MAZDA3. The New York International Auto Show is open to the public April 10-19, 2009, at the Jacob Javits Convention Center.

The CX-7 is a great looking car, but does nothing in Europe because it lacks a diesel engine.

This new design language, just doesnt work for me. The CX-9 was already an ugly car but now they have made it worse. The CX-7 was a good looking car, now it has been uglied up...

diesel engines are useless. sure they give good fuel economy. but personally, you would never catch me in a deisel car. and i dont think the cx-7 is that brilliant. one main feature that ruins all mazas is the HUGE mazda logo in front. i mean yes we know its a mazda, dont need a 20" emblem...

The design language works very well on their passenger cars, but not so on their SUV's.

Well, the good news is that now Mazda DOES OFFER A DIESEL ENGINE on the CX-7, but maybe some of you were left behind by the news... They launched it at the Geneva motor show... The car looks very fine and diesel engines are always a better economic decision that gasoline engines, if you drive a lot of kilometers and don't mind the little bit extra noise. I personaly like the extra profound noise of a diesel better than a bee sounding gasoline engine. Go for the Diesel. End of story.

The only thing I dislike about Mazda are the tacky boy racer aftermarket rear lights this insist on fitting, apart from that they are good!
