I think that it is possible that they are testing a hybrid version of 4-cylinder for more eco friendly emissions.

ahahah you all make me laugh with your speculations...This is nothing else than an old X1 mule, that some BMW guy took to go shopping (or anything else) in Norway while cold testing in Arjeplog, Sweden...

The disguise shows large grille openings similar to BMW's new design direction, so it is probably a development mule testing engine cooling performance for a future model front end. Possibly next generation 3er, or 3er GT. All OEMs use attribute prototypes based on last generation vehicles with next generation features for evaluation. This allows early testing ahead of prototype or pre-production build car availability. Prevents making an expensive mistake and having to redesign and retool components. Validated design ahead of production tooling.

Raises an interesting question -- as cars get older, they get bigger - the modern 3 series is bigger than the original 5 series. So over the years the cars move up a model designation, and therefore in 20 years a 1 series will be the size of a current 3 series. What happens then -- what do they call their new small car? The 0 series?

I don't know, but I hope the 7 series of 2030 won't be in size of a current city bus...

It's the new F3, the same model in 3-Series than 5-Series named as 5-Series GT.
