Here's a look at the upcoming standard S-Class Coupe.

"Standard" meaning as opposed to the AMG version we've previously had a sneak peek at.

New in the S-Class Coupe (besides the name, as it replaces the CL) will be the redesigned headlights, the addition of LED-day driving lights, a different grill that slants much less, full LED tail lights, new front and rear bumpers and a new set of pipes for the exhaust.

Engines expected are the same range as seen in the S-Class series, likely coming with improvements in fuel economy and upped performance output through engine management techniques that Mercedes-Benz is constantly developing.

An S-Class Coupe 400 BlueHybrid may also be in the works as the S-Class sedan version is already expected this May. The 400 BlueHybrid features a 3.5 liter V6 engine with 279 hp coupled with an electric motor of 20 hp and a combined torque reading of 385 Nm. With the addition of stop-start technology, the 400 BlueHybrid rates an impressive fuel economy of 7.9 liters per 100 km (30mpg US) for the full-sized S-Class.

so will the SLK be called C-Class Coupe? and what about the SL?

The C-Class Coupé is the CLC.

Not so. The CLC is a sportshatch. The C-class coupe was always the CLK, but the CLK replacement will in fact be an E-class coupe.

Finally, the CL discrepancy was annoying me.

I like it, just when im starting to get the hang of MB names they need to go and change them! Aint it typical. Oh well they look pretty easy to re-learn

Am I the only one who's getting really annoyed by Merc's new model designation?

Uh the CLC isn't the C-Class Coupe. Its the answer to the old 3-Series compact. Hopefully they will design a 1-Series rival soon, as well as a real C-Class coupe.

there was some talk a while ago about the new B class being a true 1-Series/A3 rival, with a coupe version called the BLK to go against the 1-Series coupe. i've not heard anything since tho, so i dunno if that's still gonna happen

They should just go back to their old school (late 80's, early 90's) nomenclature. 300, 400, 500 for engine sizes, E for sedans, SE for S-class, SEL for long-wheelbase S-class. SEC for current CL, SL for roadster, and get rid of the SLK. And leave the E coupe as it is. Oh, wouldn't mind a 300- or 400-TD here in the states =)

Then maybe they will be as reliable as they were during that time.

i don't really see the point in the change. i always liked the CL nameplate. what annoys me more is changing the CLK to the E-Class coupe. that messes up everything

Exactly! The clk MAY be called E-class coupe, but the CL doesnt have anything to do with an s-class..just the interior is similar.

Other than the fact that it is exactly the same platform as the S-Class. They are mechanical twins. S-Class Coupe is more accurate than CL.

i like this, i alweighs thought the cl name was stupid (along with the clk name)and that the CL was just to round. Anyweigh, i dnt think the rest of the names will be changed, the cl is being renamed as the s class coupe because it shares alot of parts, interior, and engines with the S clas sedan, along with the looks. Same thing with the E class and E class coupe. The SLK being renamed the C class convertible is stupid. SLK stands for (in english) sport light short, so basically a shorter version of the SL. And the CLC is ment to be an all new car not related to the C class to compare with the 1 series, well... thts wht i read, so im assuming the next one will. ANYWEIGH long story short, I like the new names, they make more sense.

The word Coupe is dead- what with the CLS/CS/rapide/panamera, EVEN VW is in there on 4-door coupes!I just can't wait for the VW T7 microbus CC - coupe, or better yet the new Ford F250 Coupe - see my point? Besides, I can see clearly this is NOT a CL- it looks like a R8!

Nah, coupe is still alive, just used in retarded weighs, and no, this is clearly a Merc... or are u tying to be funny?

Coupe stems from the French term couper (to cut). It became widely used to describe private carriages that had been "cut" to hold two or fewer people. It has nothing to do with door count, or what a car "looks" like.

so the CL will be renamed to S Coupe?

The current model is the best looking Mercedes (with the possible exception of the SL65 AMG Black). The design is so integrated, the proportions so elegant and I love the hint of the 1980s SEC around the front. I hope the face lift is as handsome.
