Rendered Speculation: 2011 BMW 5-Series

 Rendered Speculation: 2011 BMW 5-Series
2011 BMW 5-Series Artists Rendering / jonsibal.com

BMW had the European launch of the current 5 Series (E60) in 2003. The car underwent a facelift in 2007 and spy pictures depicting it while in testing have been shot. Now it is time to look forward to the next generation Fiver's outer skin. Because of how automakers work with regard to scheduling their cars, the 5 Series' final design has probably been approved already. And yes, it is a Chris Bangle-approved design. This is when artists start speculating on what it might look like in the metal when it is launched in 2011.

We have this interpretation of the 5 Series by Jonsibal. A recently leaked image of the front bumper and a leaked scan of the brochure were used to create this rendering. The new design draws its inspiration from the facelifted 3 Series on the bonnet, the 2010 7 Series on the front grille and bits from the CS Concept and the recently unveiled 5 Series GT Concept.

Under the bonnet the 2011 5 Series will debut new engines which work with BMW's next-generation EfficientDynamics. Petrol and diesel options are a given, while a hybrid may also make the lineup in order take on cars like the Lexus GS450H. The 535i will use the 3.0-litre twin turbo petrol to the effect of about 240kW (326hp) while a 550i will take the 300kW (408hp) 4.4-litre twin turbo V8.

BMW is scheduled to introduce a new compact 4-cylinder petrol turbo engine to complement its existing 4-pot twin turbo diesel and the 5 will surely benefit from it. For the first time we are also probably going to see an M5 with a smaller turbocharged engine leaping well over 400kW (544hp).

Some new technologies like the redesigned iDrive with 3D satellite mapping, LED front and rear lights as well as an 8-speed automatic gearbox will filter down to the 5 Series.

Is everyone serious! This car looks pretty much exactly the same as the new 7 series, the design behind this car is the look of a person running flat out into a brick wall pushing there nose into there forhead exposing the nostrals. No wonder the head designer quit, he had just unleashed metal in the shape of pour filth.

Ironically, it doesn't happen to be a real BMW, but a photoshop rendering.

This does look awesome. Sadly, the production car will have the same front end as that ghastly 5-series GT. They're almost identical, I know, but this one's headlights have more character. And bimmers have always been about the headlights.

I like the current (e60) more but i think that this could work, not a great fan at the moment but if BMW build a car looking like this it will grow on me (abit like all BMW design eg. X6)

Great rendering, love the design. Huge fan of the E60, but this looks even better, if it's close to what BMW will actually produce. I wonder if major manufacturers with cash to burn like BMW and MB look at these kind of renderings during the design of a new car?

I rather doubt it as the actual car is already designed. Anyway a nice rendering, 5 GT is waaaaaaaay worse.

Nice??? Surely some mistake - a hideous 'face' to see looming up in your rear view mirror. It's hard to see how BMW could make it's drivers any less popular with other road users but this could well do it. Q. What is the difference between a porcupine and a BMW? A. A porcupine has pricks on the outside!

ROFL ... your name gives more than a slight hint towards your bias ... current MB designs are so NOT stylish IMHO ... anyway I really like this rendering, for me the face has the perfect hint of aggression that sits well with the BMW brand name

nope, that title goes to the new Mercedes E Class, uglier than anything we've seen in the premium segment for the last 15 years probably

no !!! The Serie 5 GT have a different front !! The 5 GT is the same opposant than the X6 with the X5. WCF post the front bump of the 5 Series last time... This render is 90% of the next generation of 5 series

"The 5 GT is the same opposant than the X6 with the X5. " Any chance of a translation of this into English?

The bonnet has one too many "character lines" in it for my taste. Perhaps VanHooeydonk will remove the 3-series like lines running from the roundel and smooth things out a bit.
