While Audi is basking in the glory of its R8, rumours of a smaller R4 just keep cropping up at every turn. This is an artist's rendering of what an Audi R4 could look like if it did come to market. Given the speculation about BMW's own smaller roadster dubbed the Z2, Audi could be keen on the concept of an R4 or even the R3.

An Audi R4 it has been suggested, would use smaller engines than the TT range. These would be placed mid-section like in the R8. Three engine possibilities currently exist for the R4 in the 1.4 TSI, the 1.8 TSI and the 2.0TDI. The new TT RS may also have provided a possible engine for the R4 in the 340hp (250kW) 2.5-litre TFSI. Naturally, quattro all-wheel-drive would be fitted to the top-of-the-range model while the lesser versions get FWD. Of course two versions in the form of a coupe and a roadster would eventually appear.

The R4 would potentially share the same platform as the production version of the VW BlueSport Concept which was shown in Detroit earlier this year.

Thanks to professional car designer and Autocar Czech Republic magazine freelancer Jan Kamenistiak for the renderings.

I think that looks fabulous. Assuming Audi make a car for such a category, which seems increasingly likely, I think they could be on to a serious winner. Just make what they see here and see them fly out.

Super looking but I will stick with my R8 4.2 R-Tronic.

Looks great, but i would say it is growing increasingly UNLIKELY it will make it to production now that Porsche will have it's say...

I'm highly doubtful too. The renderings looks great but i don't think this car fits in the model range.

Actually, we will see this car both as the VW Concept Blue and the Audi R4, which justifies the cost of tooling and of manufacturing unit cost. The only place WCF got it wrong is that the 2-wheel drive version will be rear wheel drive.

its okay. but honestly, audi they should make the TT better first. if they use the "R_", it better be good.

This will replace the TT apparently.

I hope this replaces that fat looking TT. I'd get a Boxster-based Audi coupe/roaster any day over a Golf-based one... Won't you?

it won`t replace the TT, cause this is a midengine sportscar concept with 2 seats. the TT has 2+2 seats and a front engine and is successful, so Audi may be adding the R4 to the range.

There is still A5, which has 2+2 seating. I think that TT is popular because of it's lightweight and agility. No one sits in the back seat of TT.

So new small mid engined light weight car could replace TT and A5 could handle people who like more than 2 seats.

They could realize economies of scale were Porsche to produce a version of this. It would be a sub Boxster/Cayman Model. It could be a spiritual successor to the 912 and 356.

there was another speculation of an R6 if I am not wrong. What happened to that car?

I like the rendering of the rear. If Audi goes ahead with the R4 I hope the design stands on it's own rather than pilfering too many design elements from the R8.

Do you guys ever think before writing? FWD in a mid engine car does NOT make any sense.
