Our clever confederates at Jalopnik.com have had a look at the source code of BMW's new micro-site for the X5 M and X6 M launch and found a few tid-bits of info BMW may not have wanted to make public right away.

So it seems the X5 and X6 M versions will come with a V8 with twin-scroll turbochargers and 550 hp.

One of the tags the designers put into the page hoping to generate as much traffic as possible included the following:

"eight-cylinder engine, V8, Twin Scroll Twin Turbo, 550 bhp,all-wheel, Adaptive Drive, HUD, Head Up Display"

It's a forgivable slip and it's likely BMW is happy with the attention the site will get from this "reveal." Quotation marks meant to convey skepticism, yes.

The intrepid souls at Jalopnik used a feature in the Firefox web browser that allows one to look at the source code for any website they are currently on. Now, maybe they can find a tool that opens up that container and shows us what's in there.

Those cars haven´t been released, and you already know that they aren´t as good as the Cayenne? And they are pointless? And the Cayenne, ML AMG, are not? I bet that the x5 and mainly the x6 will beat in every ways those competitors. Principaly in sales!

There was humour attached to my post. I never said the Cayenne or ML were not without a point. And it almost goes without saying that they are compromised, because such vehicles can hardly stray off road so don't need the ground clearance, which only serves to give a higher centre of gravity then needed, placing a need for greater electronics and hardware to counter the body roll, which adds weight, which then means more power is needed to make it go and larger brakes to make it stop, which adds weight... the enemies of performance, agility and efficeincy, which I recall is what the E30 M stood for.

Regardless of whether you like 4x4s or not, such vehicles are barging in the opposite direction of the way the car industry needs to go, which is lighter weight and greater efficeincy.

How would you argue against them being compromised? OK, all cars have compromises, but surely there are fewer in an M3 or M5 Touring, if it's space and performance you need.

I agree 100% with Bristol. These are just tools for someone to show off. No real purpose.

I would've loved for more naturally aspirated engines from BMW, but they are going for fuel efficiency as well as performance, and these 2 vehicles will be the epitomy of them. Whenever these come out, I'd love to see comparisons between the Cayenne and X5/6 M. I am a little biased towards BMW, but I am saving it until I see numbers and actual tests.

Is this the engine that they're gonna put in the next M5 and M6?

Well there is some truth to Bristol's comment. As opposed to the X5 the cayenne was designed to be very capable off road. It's got lot's of ground clearance, low-range gearbox, locking diffs, reinforced underbody and fuel tank, snorkels available so it can wade in almost two feet of water etc. Maybe the Turbo S and GTS models are more build for the road, but the regular S's and Turbo's are very good off roaders. There's a even the Transyberia Rally run by Porsche for cayennes, a program to make the cayenne an even better off road vehicle.

I have an X5 4.8i and to answer "bristol", I REALLY need a big 4x4, I live in Montreal, QC and we get meters of snow each winter, so if I have a small 2-wheel drive I would get stuck easily!

Yes...but you don't need a 550bhp twin-turbo V8 4x4 to do so, thats his point....not that 4x4's are useless.

hopefully, the check engine light wont come on during the dealer PDI process, like the $101,000 7 series just did...geesh... I deal with BMW and Cadillacs all day and they are equals in the lack of finish, but unlike the Cadillac, the BMW will now spend 8 hrs hooked up to a data center so the the BMW Factory can finish building the car.

muhaidib X5 is useless 4x4. Its not good in offroad or in snow.

do you have ANY idea what you're talking about? the X5 has been around for a while now and it's a well established fact that they are rubbish off road.

just because they are improving it's performance doesn't mean they'll make it better off road. in fact the opposite is likely to be true.
