Auditors express *substantial doubt* about GM's future

Auditors claim GM's future in doubt without more federal aid

GM is on the verge of demise despite the billions the troubled Detroit automaker has received in federal bailout loans.

According to GM's own auditors, there is "substantial doubt" about the viability of the company without more federal help. In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the company's auditing firm, Deloitte & Touche, said, "the corporation's recurring losses from operations, stockholders' deficit, and inability to generate sufficient cash flow to meet its obligations and sustain its operations raise substantial doubt about its ability to continue as a going concern."

GM is cash-starved and in need of more funds to continue to operate. In 2008, the company suffered a loss of 30.9 billion US dollars. It has asked the US government for an additional 16.6 billion US dollars on top of the 13.4 billion it has received so far.

And GM isn't only asking for help in the United States. It has also received a bailout loan for operations in Canada and has asked governments in Australia, Sweden, Germany and even Thailand to help fund its operations in those countries.

In Germany, GM subsidiary Opel is looking for funding from the German government as the automaker's operations and corporate structure are too integrated into GM in order for the company to be easily sold-off or spun-off on its own. It is also entirely dependent on GM for funding. GM Europe has said it needs 3.3 billion euros ($4.15 billion US dollars) in order to continue operating and expects the bulk of that funding to come from the German government where most of Opel's operations are based.

It is not known how much funding Opel would need to be spun-off on its own in the event of a GM bankruptcy.

GM Statement Regarding Auditor's 'Going Concern' Opinion Included in the Company's 2008 10-K Filing

Auditors are required to assess whether there is substantial doubt about an entity's ability to continue as a going concern over the next year. Given GM's public statements on our liquidity position dating back to the end of 2008 and more fully disclosed in our February 17 viability plan submission, the opinion rendered in our 10-K was not unexpected.

That opinion is dependent on a number of factors including our ability to execute our viability plan, compliance with our U.S. Treasury loans, volume recovery of the industry, and access to additional funding from the U.S. and certain other governments. Once global automotive sales recover and GM's restructuring actions generate the anticipated savings and benefits, the company is expected to again be able to fund its own operating requirements.

The auditor's opinion has no impact on the aggressive actions we are taking to restructure our business for long-term viability.

Sorry indahead, Mercedes, BMW, and VW could not save GM or make it better. They have their own problems.

Well VW could actually buy it...all of its brands are having huge success. However its still a recession so i doubt they have money to throw..

...kinda ridiculous comment... Benz and Chrysler were connected...remember...and we all know how that worked out. BTW Porsche (not VW) and it's brands are doing ok...but world dominance is a long way off...

I agree, Benz milked Chryser dry then took off. There would be no gain in buying them now that they have no money.

Benz milked chrysler?? Are you kidding joe? It's the other way around, i took a tour of a chrysler plant down here in canada for college, and they had sooo many engineers from germany over to help them design the 300 and sebring. The 2 cars that kept the brand alive...If you look at history as soon as those 2 got involved mercedes quality started going down, because as anyone would they devoted a lot of time into bringing up this new brand they bought, also not realizing how shitty their components are so they started using some chrysler components in mercs too. Thats why the mercs from that era do not compare to the ones now...Look at what they have come out with since the break-up, they are back to the good o'l benz from the day. What has Chrysler come out with since the split??? A f-ing hat begging for $$, so dont sit there saying Benz milked Chrysler...

Yes... cause the sebring was such an amazing car... *eyes roll* if a company has to pay billions of dollars to get that pos I call it milking. As to the 300 you know they didn't engineer anything new with it, they just reached into their big bag of tricks (I mean cars) and pulled out a mediocre performer. [edit] also, most Automotive engineers switch companies at lest 2 or 3 times in their career. Meaning that there already are a large number of "German" engineers working for the American companies, as there are "American" engineers working for German companies. Saying a large number of "German" engineers from Benz came over to help Chrysler is inaccurate (not to mention elitist... which I guess I already expected from you), a large number of Benz's patents, part books, and designs came over is much more accurate.

"raise substantial doubt about its ability to continue as a going concern"... so let it go... to do something they should've done a long time ago! the bankruptcy procedures MAYBE, just maybe, will transform this ex-giant into a more market oriented and efficient producer (a smaller one will be no shame as long as he will make money not swallow money as a black hole... tax payer's money)

I hope for Opel and Saab, that they can cut the relationship to GM and reconstruct their management for independence. Opel has success. It whould be stupid to end the area of this traditional company. They are innovative and make better in quality then before. I'm not a fan of the idea, that Germany whould invest in a company. What's up with the problems of our foundries and many other small firms that need sozial payments? Other carmakers - contrahents whould spent there taxes in Opel, that whould'nt be correct

Like xLumino said, i hope that SAAB and Opel will survie togheter and let the american big car big consumption mother die ! Sounds a little too tough what i have said, but they did it with their own hands. When Europe addopted the downsize trend for the engine, many CP for less cubic centimeters, they still had in production engines like 4 liter with 200 +, or Escalade with its engine over 6000 cmc with 300 + CP. The Japonese carmakers were smarter, they get the ideea of the world car making future movements - see the Type R, S2000, Impreza, EVO etc .. what american car in the US (GM, Ford, etc)has a 2000 cmc with more CP than 100 or so? The only car that deserves to stay on the market is the Corvette, as far i am concerned.

benzinan - the car brands are VW's family, Porsche has big % of shares in VW, but that doesn't make Porsche the owner of the brands, also the German Land of Lower Saxony has shares in VW, that doesn't mean that Skoda is a brand of Lo. Sax.

The strange thing is that while Europeans focused on higher output smaller engines, American companies focused on producing better fuel economy engines... that is why an American engine of similar power rating though it may have more displacement will also have equivalent or better fuel economy. Point and case the Audi A4 quattro (17/26mpg 3.2L 265hp) vs a Corvette (16/26mpg 6.2L at 430hp), and the Audi R8 (13/18mpg 4.2L 420hp) vs the Dodge Charger SRT8 (13/19mpg 6.1L 425hp).

The germans should not give a bail-out, just buy opel out from GM. And once its bought give Opel a bail out, they would own it anyways. And laugh in GM's face. These douchebags have taken all this money, and yet i see no changes being made, where is the volt?? Still in hyperspace? I still see Suburbans and Escalades and Tahoes...What has changed since they got this $$?? Oh...sorry i forgot they were busy filming Transformers 2, i guess that was worth the billions they got...Hell that will definitely be the highest production cost movie, 30 billion $ if they get this other 16.6.

For 30 billion $$ i better see Meagan fox fully nude, forget the little robots, just her nude for 2hrs. If GM did that i'd believe in them as much as i do in Obama. CHANGE!!!!!!!!!!

I wholeheartedly support radmeister's comment above. We should hereby call for a boycott on all GM products untill we have either GM declare bankruptcy or two hours of glorious Megan Fox nudity!!! (afterwards, I would buy a GM product myself just to see more in Transformers 3!).
