Tata Motors is joining the ever-growing list of motor manufacturers who are going upscale with models previous reserved for the mass market. To help Tata achieve this goal the Italian design house of Pininfarina was called upon to style this car here by the name of Pr1ma. They called it Pr1ma in translation of the Italian word meaning "first".

So far this is a mere concept car but it could very well spell the design signature of the next Tata Indigo sedan. After all it is based on that car's platform. The Pr1ma is a four-door sedan with a 2.7 metre wheelbase which is longer than that of the Indigo. Its lines seem to have a measured fluidity about them, spelling not only a more upmarket car but one with a slight thought of sportiness. Further evidence of this is in the coupe-like form of its roofline towards the rear. The trapezium front grille and semi-trapezoid tailpipes assist in painting a picture of a higher-class vehicle, certainly one higher than an Indigo.

As far as class is concerned it may be suggested that the Pr1ma is going after leaders like the Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic sedan and VW Polo sedan. The Tata Pr1ma can be seen at close range at the Geneva Motor Show right now.

Press Release (Click to expand)

The Tata Motors Limited stand hosts the world première of the Tata Pr1ma (Italian for "First"), a styling model designed and built by Pininfarina for the Indian company, first official project - hence its name - of the Tata-Pininfarina cooperation in the fields of research, design and engineering. As part of a strategy outlined early in 2008, Pininfarina has set itself the goal of establishing itself in India where it offers its design and engineering services to local carmakers.

Based on the platform of the first Indian saloon, the Tata Indigo, the Tata Pr1ma designed by Pininfarina offers an indication of how the next generation of Tata saloons could be interpreted, with a distinctive, elegant design. Conceived to provide luxurious comfort, this 4-door model has a sober but very refined design, combined with sinuous lines that give the car the personality of a coupe. It is a solution that immediately adds value, compared to the essential design usually associated with the Tata brand.

The Tata Pr1ma addresses a higher segment, and the external and internal measurements are larger than those of the Indigo, thanks to a longer wheelbase (2700 mm). The design balances fluidity and tension, which is visible in the lines that run from the front to the rear of the car. The result is an elegant look, and proportions that are both classic and modern.

The model's sleek silhouette conveys dynamism and a strong temperament. The long wheelbase creates a generous amount of room inside, underlined by the uninterrupted profile of the doors, a clean, strong blend of the best ideas of Pininfarina design. Without limiting the space inside, the tapered rear end and inclined passenger compartment convey the feeling of a coupe, underlined by the refined treatment of the pillar, an element that is typical of Pininfarina styling and sportiness.

The front view and the shape of the rear light clusters merge into the distinctive lines of the car's design, underlining its presence and dimensions. The roof stretches towards the front, conveying a sense of power and force. Each detail has been studied with care, not to decorate, but to underline the basic theme of the design and to raise the profile of the Tata logo.

I like it... but i like some of the little design cues in the concept design, which are lost in the actual model. Nonetheless, nice. I just cant wait to read some of the haters comments.

Pininfarina is a company that went almost bankrupt. It is true.

Nice, not too extravagant. I like it. Looks almost production ready. I do not see any conceptiness in it.

Insignia side windows, Hyundai headlights, Toyota back lights, so back at the drawing board.

What!?! Do you really think Pininfarina is dumb enough to copy someones elses design. You do know who Pininfarina is right?

Well, the Pininfarina drawing it's nice and original, but the car it's not, it looks like they lost the details of the drawing on the way of making the car real. And what's with those tiny rims, this is a concept, right?I can imagine that the production car will get Nano rims.

Since when have "drawings' ever looked like a completed concept? And this is hardly a concept, expect the production model to look almost exactly like this. The wheels are a perfect diameter for this size of car.

I hope that was a joke... Where do u see a Hyundia or even a toyota. At most i see a Honda front end but than again if look at the Maserati Grand Turismo ull see the def. resemblance. Its pure pininfarina.

This brand is a good example of how to adapt itself to the rest of the world and I feel no strange that it gains its own place among other auto-manufacturers. This Tata PR1Ma concept looks ok to my eyes. It might not be the best, which it doesn't need to, but it is just a proper choice to many customers in this crisis. Good Luck Tata!

Looking "okay" with the cut throat competition that exists at the moment is not enough, especially not in Europe. This segment is already over crowded by the established brands. I doubt it will work outside of India.

I will take the car for 900 bucks.

I'm quite impressed. Simple clean lines, easy on the eye. Probably in danger of becoming anonymous too soon, but otherwise, deserves success. Let's hope the production car is good to drive.

Tata is going to launch a sedan based on the Indica Vista hatchback in India in the month of June, and we expect the Prima to have what that car doesn't. It should have a more powerful engine (might come from Fiat stable, as it is now), automatic transmission (none of the Tata cars have had auto gearboxes till now), creature comforts like the Climate control, electrically operated, multi-adjustable seats etc. This should be a poor man's Jaguar, if I'm not mistaken.

Hahahahahahahaha, more like rich man's rickshaw, but no, no Jaguar, Rover was the poor man's Jag.

I met the important people in Tata stand in Geneva, and they said the car will be more up market than Indigo.

Someone here commented on the car's looks in pictures and sketches, most of the cars when they are made look a lot different from sketches, if they look similar that is because they had sketched the car over the pictures of the finished concepts or prototypes.

I've once been in one "new" Tata 2 years ago... Indica I think, oh and I've forgot about a 4x4 Tata... scary moment!!! if you want to accelerate you'll push the break pedal too, they are so close one to another, the gear lever impossible, the engine from the sixties... anyway hope never to repeat the experience... I don't even know with what to continue in describing all the negative aspects, the plastics, the way the doors don't fit into the body (you must slam them from the attic to close them) and the rain is in the car not outside... ewwww... I think it will have a huge success in India but elsewhere... so keep it home guys just like the "beautifully" engineered chinese Brilliance

admirable non-chalant , svelte lines...verrry Pininfarina ! exquisite head/tailamp details , too . I particularly liked the manner by which the engine exhaust vents were seamlessly blended into the rear bumper's contours . might I add that perhaps the wheelarch radius needed to be enlarged a bit ? thank you .
