February auto sales in the US fell by 41 percent compared to the same period last year. For GM it was 53 percent, Ford 48 percent and Chrysler 44.

With sales down dramatically over the last several months, the two Detroit automakers currently benefiting from government aid, GM and Chrysler, are at a level that is unsustainable and that could spell bankruptcy for one or both of them in the coming months, regardless of the billions in bailout loans they have received.

February sales have been the worst so far and no one knows where the bottom is in this decline.

GM's chief sales analyst, Michael C. DiGiovanni, admits that the numbers are very troubling news for the automaker. "The February numbers are clearly a step down from where we have been running the last four months. These are obviously unsustainable levels," he is quoted as saying in the New York Times story.

Emily Kolinski Morris, a senior economist at Ford, says that the February sales figures are a sign that things might get worse before they get better. The sales numbers imply "that we did not reach the bottom," she told the Times.

All automakers have been hit by the February slump. Toyota sales were down 40 percent, 38 for Honda and 37 for Nissan, the 3 largest import brands in the US.

Although sales have been down sharply since last fall, figures were relatively flat until an even more drastic drop last month. At current sales levels, both GM and Chrysler will not survive the year.

Bad news! Obama needs to provide an incentive to get drivers into more fuel efficeint vehicles to drive demand. Both Germany and Italy are looking at cash rebates for older cars traded in for new, cleaner models. Maybe the US needs to do the same.

I dont see how that would help GM, you think anyone would be stupid enough to trade in their working car for a GM??? Hell no they would put that incentive from the government towards a Honda or Toyota. They are doomed, they lost the faith and respect of people. That's not something you get back with discounts. Their cars were already priced lower than the competition from japan, yet they still havent sold. DOOMED i tell ya!

Time to throw the towel guys! Declare bankruptcy. Eliminate Buick, Pontiac, Saturn, GMC. Keep Chevy with Cadillac as a luxo brand. Sell Hummer to the highest bidder. You're done, no bail out is gonna revert that. Just like Pan Am.

And now, the end is near And so I face, my final curtain.........

Don't waste another penny on this US. That time is better spent working out how you are going to get on after GM has gone. If only as much effort had been spent in the last 20 years or more putting things straight we might not be in this position now.

But more, much more than this GM/Ford/Chrysler did it their way

Finally the ridiculous UAW will die. The end of the UAW will do wonders for the American work ethic. No more free lunch handed to you by being overpaid. No more legalized lying and stealing by the Union bosses.
