Is that rear wheel flare effect not from BMw's CS concept? But I must say that the CS one looks so much classier and more premium compared to this cheap line.

Yes please. All it needs is one wiper, retracting back headrest, and the grill like on the sedan and it would be perfect.

I bet Hyundai are happy...the rear looks just like a Sonata! Front end is very tuff tho.
March 3, 2009 9:48 pm
they have turned a really good corporate bold looking car into a hyundai sonata, welldone merc.

to all u people comparing it to a hyundai... what do YOU drive exactly? just out of curiosity. i mean i completely agree with the fact that the rear of this is hideous for a merc. aka right off the new genesis coupe (i think... from what i remember). but yea. just curious.

take a guess by my username what i drive lol. im just saying. the E class used to be real bold and stylish looking. now it is just a really expensive hyundai.

I must say that I like more the new Opel Insignia's dashboard than new Merc's dash (the design)... it seems that they're stuck in time! I'm not saying that I don't like it but... it has nothing but right angles! All in all the new E-Class it's ok (especially the front and the side) but not an impressive car though! IMO

Merc's interior design is terrible!!! C Class as well and the new E. What's up with them DISAPPOINTING
March 5, 2009 2:37 pm
I wonder if they will make an AMG Black edition out of this car, it would be mean. Hopefully they fix those rear lights.
March 4, 2009 3:14 am
while I still have some mixed feelings about the sedan (especially the rear part needs some time to get used to), I find this coupe much much better looking.
March 4, 2009 7:08 am
of course theres gonna be an amg, an amg black and maybe a amg dtm as well. this looks nice but i rather prefer the sedan in amg trim. i do agree the back end could have been much better but cmon, the hyundai comments are starting to get boring. its those guys, lexus and who else who copied merc in the first place. plus seeing the e in the flesh is sure to change minds. lets wait and see

BMW and Merc are making some ugly rears -- I hope it's not too contagious as to affect Audi
March 4, 2009 8:32 am
Stop making it as if they couldn't help. They are the ones blatently copying BMW and Merc
March 5, 2009 2:39 pm
BMW's rears are not ugly as a matter of fact the only Audi rear that's good is the A8 and A3. The rest of Audi cars look like they borrowed rears from rabbits and Guinea pigs.

The silouette (sp?) of this car is really beautiful. The back-end styling works much better on the coupe than the sedan. As far as the design is concerned, basically everyting has been tried. If they went with round tailights there would have been comparisons to a Jetta or Mazda or something like that.
The sedan has an understated design that will appeal to the 45-65 year old crowd, which I think is exactly what Merc was going for with the sedan. That age bracket cn readily afford a $58000 car that has tons of features and rides quiet, solid and smooth. The 5-series and the A6 is shooting for a younger crowd. Hence, they cost less. Also, the E-class will be the safest car in its class, which will appeal more to the older buyer.

If economy were good, this new E will sell very good just because its logo. However, the current global situation will let Merc take the challenge. Its sales figure will sooner later tell them this W212 is a successful or not. As my opinion, they will fail.

edit: comment was meant as an anwser to #1, sub39h; ended up misplaced due to one less successful login.

It looks kind of bulky. M3 coupe kills this. Except if you're over 50, in which case, you'll love it.

Mercedes have reached an all new low with their new E Class interiors, especially the coup?. There seems to be a complete lack of inspiration and they certainly do not warrant the price. Looks like they have looked back to earlier Merc interiors from the late 80's early 90's, which is fair enough, but the resolution is far worse. Come on Mercedes, you can do better than this.
March 9, 2009 5:51 pm
never been a merc man but i am liking this new e coupe be very interested to see what it looks like on the road but merc interiors dont hold a candle to audi's for design or build or materials
March 22, 2009 11:23 am
well i always fancied the w124 e-class from the 80's
that design came from the hands of bruno sacco, since he retired, mb have been struggling just like bmw and audi.
the front of new audis are ghastly.as aerodynamic as a brick ala dodge ram. in each bmw case the successor designs are less attractive, in bmw's case applies to 3,5,7 and the last 3 generations of each. a clean sheet of paper required. at least mb are doing better than that this new coupe may look better in the metal-in the right colors
