VW should build a time machine and send this Polo back about 10 years and call it the Golf. It would be a smash hit styling-wise. Not that the Golf Mk IV was an uninspiring car, it just had an uninspiring design.
So, here's another sneak peek at the the upcoming Polo, which comes to us courtesy of WCF reader Bernd and a spread in a German magazine.
The new Polo continues to grow in size as the car has been on steroids from generation to generation. (The current Polo is bigger than the original Golf.) Although this latest growth spurt is quite minimal with the new dimensions said to be 3.95 meters in length (155.5 inches) compared to the 3.92 meters (154.3 inches) of the current Polo.
VW will first launch a 5-door version of the Polo and it will come 3 variants of the 1.6 liter TDI turbo diesel tuned to 75, 90 or 105 hp respectively. The gasoline range starts with two variations on a 1.2 liter with either 60 or 70 hp. Technology available will include a stop/start function, Blue Motion and even the new 7-speed DSG transmission will be an option on some upper range variants.
A Polo GTI is expected to make it to the Frankfurt show in September accompanied by a 3-door version too. The GTI will come with VW's 1.4 liter TFSI engine with an output of 170 hp.
The VW Polo will arrive in European showrooms in June with a base-model price tag of around 14,000 euros.
